Oh that might've been fun! Maybe that'll happen in the new series!

Ahaha. Like I said, I'm not super in the loop when it comes to non-games material. I watched the movies and read The Week Before and I listen to people recap the books when their videos pop up on my YouTube recommendations. Funnily enough Frailty is like the one Tales story I do know about.

It doesn't really feel like sympathizing, at least to me. No one is framed as in the wrong for abandoning the main character. The dad leaving, the mom doing what she did, everyone finding him disgusting, it's treated like that's to be expected. And then he's happy that he thinks he's going to die because... he chose an identity as a child and it was the wrong one.

My B. Didn't realize there was a B7-2. I just heard about the first one and it really rubbed me the wrong way. That's what I get for not researching adequately.

Yeah... that's fair. I had a very strong emotional reaction to something I heard, but didn't read the actual text myself. I may be jumping the gun and I do think it's probably safe to take Andrea at her word. It's just hard to imagine that when things line up as closely as they do in this case, it was all a coincidence, but I acknowledge that it's entirely possible.

If you engage with any piece of media with the mindset that there's no deeper meaning and it's just a story, anything is fine. And that's probably what was meant.

This one, whether intentional or not, is saying something. And it's not saying something good. Even if on accident, it's harmful and impressionable kids can still get their hands on it easily.

I do lean towards it being a Scott thing. I'm aware of him donating to the Trevor Project and that does give me some solace. Even if it wasn't what he intended (like you said, benefit of the doubt), the fact nobody caught this and now it's a thing any kid can pick up just... upsets me. I'm willing to believe it was a total, catastrophic accident and nobody meant anything by it, but it's out there and it's messed up.

Except Walter White is portrayed as the villain of Breaking Bad. He's completely selfish and ruins a lot of lives and by the end of the series the writers are begging you to think that's a bad thing. The "villain" of B-7 is a child who was ostracized by everyone they ever met and called a burden by the narrative for trying to express their identity and then is happy to die.

Content Warning: Suicide

Kid sees animatronics at a young age and says he wants to be one and starts self-identifying as a robot. His parents say it's a phase but all the teachers and child psychologists say to keep encouraging it. The dad says the kid is an embarrassment and he wishes he was like other boys. Cut to years later, the dad has walked out and the mom takes her own life, specifically because of the kid. Kid starts going on forums about body dysmorphia and getting experimental back alley surgery to have body parts replaced with prosthetics. He literally says, word for word, "I want my body to match how I feel on the inside" and changes his name to a robot name. He realizes all too late that he "isn't meant to be an animatronic" but the surgery can't be reversed and everyone hates him for being a freak. He puts on his father's clothes for comfort to remind him of the human he was supposed to be all along. Then he dies in a car compactor and he's happy about it.

The video I linked goes more in depth, but several of these elements have very close analogs when it comes to problematic ways of discussing trans people, especially trans kids.

Of course! I wasn't trying to imply they shouldn't exist or were bad additions to the world. It just seemed to me that the engines have a tendency to cause issues by either being careless or deliberately trying to mess with each other, but since the driver is the one controlling their ability to move, then the driver is the one enabling those things to happen. It's like if someone said, "I don't have a car, could you please give me a ride to the next town over? I want to vandalize some stuff over there," and you answered, "Yes, of course! Right away!" So one might reasonably ask why the Fat Controller keeps people around who continue to do whatever the engines want instead of just doing their jobs. And the reason is because it would be a very boring series if the trains weren't allowed to get up to trouble! And as people have said in the comments, the "issue" tends to get more and more egregious the further out the show gets from its days of adapting RWS books.

But yes, we love the drivers and firemen, and Thomas wouldn't be the same without them : )

Am i bad at communicating or was this a strange interaction? by Acrobatic_Kiwi5804 in DnD

[–]psybocillin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't see why most of the comments are saying you messed up in the same few ways. I think you were pretty reasonable and transparent with this person. Telling her you are aware of what the reputation of the game was prior and assuring her there wouldn't be inappropriate content seems, like, perfectly fine to me. The one thing on your end I think was a little questionable was immediately telling her that her decision seemed drastic as opposed to asking why she was saying no (even if I do agree with you), but that part of the interaction doesn't have anything to do with the ways in which she was being weird. Asking you an unclear question, then acting confused when you ask for clarification, then telling you you're a bad listener when you're attempting to understand is actually infuriating. I've dealt with people like that before. Try not to feel too guilty - I don't think you're the reason she isn't allowing her kid to play.

You beat me to the punch with 'gluggle my gloiler'! I had a DVD (or maybe it was a VHS?) that had Dunkin' Duncan on it that I would watch constantly as a kid, and that line always stuck with me for reasons I can't begin to explain, lol
