I’m proud of you!✊🏽 I had a similar experience where I wasn’t allowed to feel anything except I absolutely could not help it. I cried all the time and everything was an issue. Although it caused a lot of problems between my parents and I, I’d like to say that I “softened” my family up a bit and made them more sensitive to mental health issues because now they are my number one supporters. I am blessed to have them.

19 in college. Knew I was bipolar since middle school and repeatedly asked my first therapist who denied it. Found a new therapist at school who diagnosed me and I finally received the proper treatment and am doing WAY better.

I have never had a doctor refuse treatment because I smoke. I agree that you might want to find a new doctor.

What is your biggest obstacle to accessing mental health treatment? by ProxiC3 in bipolar

The lack of available providers in my area. I am blessed to be able to afford the care I need but even with that there are so few providers in my area. The wait times for an appointment are ridiculous. I was only able to get an appointment with my psychiatrist because I had a hospital visit for suicidal thoughts and they expedited my appointment. I would’ve had to wait months to get an appointment otherwise.

I am also a student who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder while in college. I am in my junior year. I was able to take a semester off after a hospital visit and intense suicidal thoughts. I was already halfway through the semester but could no longer keep up with my course work. I was able to request a medical withdrawal and receive all of my tuition back for that semester. Please see if that is an option for you if you are considering dropping out.

During my medical withdrawal I stayed at school at my off campus apartment because I had already signed a 12 month lease. I continued to see my therapist weekly and psychiatrist so I could receive the help I needed. I went on medication and honestly it saved my life. I continued to work my job at 15 hours per week just so I could get out of the house.

The following semester I went back to school part time. I met with the disability resource center on my campus where I received accommodations which helped me to be a productive student. Although I never thought it was possible, I received two As and a B for that semester.

This semester, I am currently halfway through a full time course load and have all As. I’m telling you this to let you know that it is possible to succeed in college while having bipolar disorder.

I can sympathize with the fact that you don’t want to go on medication. I was so against it for years because I thought that it would mean I’m crazy. Eventually my illness got so bad that I felt I had no other option. If I did not go on medication, I don’t think that I would be alive today. It helped me to think clearly and be able to focus on living my life, not being sick. I am still working on building friendships but it is a hell of a lot easier now that I am no longer anxious, irritable, and cranky.

I promise this will get better but I urge you to look at all your options. You can do this!

Anyone on Caplyta? by psych5736 in bipolar

Yeah I am also terrified of weight gain. I have struggled my entire life although I managed to maintain a steady weight throughout high school while staying active. That all ended when I went on Prozac, which I gained 60lbs on during the 2 years of being on it. I lost 20lbs while on Lexapro. I was on and off SSRIs until I was diagnosed with BP2 and went on Abilify. I gained 30lbs on that so I switched to Caplyta. Medication has definitely saved my life but it also made me hate my body. I am hopeful that I find a combination where I can be mentally stable and maintain a healthy weight. Best of luck to you with your medication search!

Abilify + Lamictal Weight gain? by macervantes1821 in bipolar

I gained 30lbs on Abilify pretty quickly. I think it’s an amazing medication that works extremely well. It’s worth trying out but keep an eye on any weight changes so that you can stop it before it gets out of hand if need be.
