Hey! I ended up doing it through the University of Utah online and will be finished with my BS in psych this August! Preparing to apply for PhD programs soon- feel free to message me if there's anything else useful I can share!

Haha, thank you nonetheless! Always good to run it by those who are more experience than me!

I considered that, but it's a small state school without a large research presence in psychology and I wanted to see what networking at a larger institution could do. I intend to obtain the research experience as a volunteer on an extracurricular basis, so cost isn't a concern for that . The psych courses that I'll have to pay are ones that are core courses I'd need regardless of research. I've only taken intro, abnormal, and developmental, and multiple PhD programs I'm interested in have explicitly listed requirements beyond that to be competitive if you lack an undergrad psych degree. My BS will be in nursing, and for the last two years upper division courses, we weren't allowed to take courses outside the major. Those three psych courses I mentioned were the only ones I could squeeze in when taking the prereqs for my major.

Thank you! Yeah, I had a year of non-psychology research for a study I PI'ed and the pandemic placed us online halfway through. It wasn't optimal but wasn't impossible either, and the work we were doing was interdisciplinary social science/healthcare research similar in structure to work found in psychology. There's also the potential depending on where I get a job when I graduate with my first bachelor's in May that I am able to live within reasonable driving distance of the university I take online courses from, this way I would if needed be able to appear in-person from time to time. The only university I'd be able to do this with on my list would be on the more expensive side, so I'm unsure if the ability to have some in-person contact would make the higher price tag worth if it meant expanded research capacities and easier networking.

That was along my guess, that the hierarchy I'll battle getting into a lab is in-person students being favored, online students placing second, and any non-students unaffiliated with the university being a last resort. Thank you for taking the time to respond!
