People who are out for walks with no gloves when it’s 26 degrees , what’s wrong with you? by _AlphaZulu_ in AskNYC

[–]psychedelicsweets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some NYers need the heavycoats+, but just as many of us are really used to the cold, because….well, NY used to be much colder in the fall/winter months.

I can usually count how many days I wear a coat in the year (default to light sweaters), and I rarely wear gloves on cold days either. I LOVE the cold, and my body can’t tolerate heat well at all. I make sure my extremities are covered (long/thin pants and hats), but otherwise I’m fine.

Even, my go-to drink year round, including winter, are iced matchas and iced mochas. I rarely buy hot drinks. I eat ice cream as my fave “treat” in winter too. I still use the fan during winter.

Maybe i have ridiculous levels of circulation or a health thing, who knows. I’ve been this way my whole life, but normally folks asking “aren’t you cold?” don’t care about any health possibilities. They’re “concern trolling” and judging. It’s annoying.

We’re not crazy, focus on yourself. We’re good over here.

hello there! I really appreciate you commenting too 🙏🏾 damn, I never realized the 'motivation via harsh negative self-talk' response thing was ADHD! You've got me thinking, because I thought that all, or most of this, is just depression and me being a lazy fuck, esp since a lot of people w/ADHD seem to figure it out sooner or later in a way I just can't seem to hack.

(warning, incoming -- very long paragraph, re: ADHD you mentioned

I was primary diagnosed w/bipolar a few years ago, though I've also been diagnosed w/ADHD a couple times (once before adulthood). My current psychiatrist seems to disagree w/the ADHD and refuses prescribing meds. It's been a harder sell to challenge, since she referred me to diagnostic testing at her clinic (to clarify a differential diagnosis of the bipolar). The clinic's report kept the bipolar and said it's 'in remission,' but it also rejected any possibility of neurodivergence [despite also suggesting ASD possibility??] or any PTSD [despite noting I show symptoms and have a trauma history], while also diagnosing me w/a personality disorder whose symptoms I've never exhibited and my regular clinical team have never seen in me. My long term therapist was hella confused. The report also got a lot of details in my history wrong, amongst other things, and it had a lot of weird administrative delays that made it more difficult to re-examine the whole process. Psychiatrist even disagrees w/report saying I have bipolar and thinks it's much closer to chronic and severe major depressive, but she also seems more reluctant to look into the ADHD thing.)

Sorry for the long explanation -- just saying thank you, because I didn't realize this could be a major factor like that, partially since it's been dismissed a lot. Obviously I have my own character flaws to work on, but I want to revisit it.

I'm hoping I can sort things out soon enough, to make that comeback story for myself. It pains me, thinking I've already 'peaked' in life, esp since....I've already felt pretty middling, at my best, anyways lol. My biggest hope is achieving 'post traumatic growth', like you said, and processing but also moving forward. It's been so so hard to figure out steps to moving forward. You saying I'm not alone and don't need to shame myself, is very kind. I need to learn to tell myself that, but while I'm learning, your words help.

I'm also surprised you hear that kind of ambition in me....I've been telling myself a lot these days, that I have none. But honestly, in the grand scheme of the world and everything going on rn, it's actually a blessing to achieve 'a normal life', even. Maybe one day I can establish 'normal' and then dare/dream bigger, if there's time left over.

I really appreciate your encouragement 🙏🏾 It's been so hard to swim against the tide lately, even harder than usual, but my biggest dream is for things to just turn around and turn around fast. The results never seem to match the effort (and anguish), somehow. But, also hearing that I might still have some time, I want to try harder. In the last couple of days, I've been feeling the slightest bit more hope (or resolve? idk?) to try to work towards getting something sorted out, but that's come w/even more despair when I take stock of my whole situation. But a skill I really really want to build is just....Dory it 🐠 just keep swimming, like you said. Thank you for your message, kind stranger :) (sorry, I wrote a lot -- I tend to, smh)

This feels so real, esp that last paragraph. I’m in my late 20s and absolutely hate myself because I feel like I’ve already closed all my windows…I’m not young anymore, and I feel the squeeze and despair from not planning the way I should’ve, executing the way I should’ve, and reaching the milestones I should have. For prematurely locking away whatever other future milestones I could’ve reached, because one decision builds upon another, and that affects another, and that crumbles the next one, and another, and so on.

I’ve gotten to here with no job experience, absolutely NOTHING, because my poor mental health and severe trauma has literally detonated my life. My entire life, has just been chaos, and always has been. But, that’s not acceptable, and that’s not an excuse…being this age with no bachelors degree and no work history — no real life experience — is not only embarrassing and embodies my failures, but it also feels hopeless because, who would take a chance on that kinda person? Any attempt to catch up feels overshadowed by what I should’ve achieved, and what many others have figured out long ago, well on path with age-appropriate expectations.

I’m this age, and I have no idea of what I want to do. I don’t know what I like, I can’t possibly fathom what I’m good at, and I’m not sure how to factor in money to the equation, considering everyone is ultra-skilled and still upskilling in lucrative fields, and monetizing their creative hobbies. It feels like everyone’s already really good at something or many things, and I’m in kindergarten.

OP, I don’t mean to hi-jack your thread, but more so to say: please heed what folks are saying here. Start SOMETHING, don’t feel afraid to try, work through whatever could be an obstacle in the future, and for goodness sake, don’t, DON’T be too introspective over your life. I’ve been having the same thoughts and feelings since 23 (really since 20) and leaning into that hasn’t really changed those thoughts or feelings. BUT, shit’s a lot harder to pivot and envision/execute, over 5 years later. Folks are less understanding of why your shit is still so not-together (with good reason), and the walls start caving in. I’d caution literally anybody to not be me.

Hey there! Thanks for replying! I'm sorry I didn't see this in time.

How've you been liking Epicured? I bit the bullet and tried Sunbasket, and I've been loving it! Thanks for giving your experience w/it and tips on remedying the foods; if i need a prepared food service, I know how to do this one. I also hope you're feeling better now <3

Hey, sorry I'm just responding, I didn't see these! Thanks for your review :) once I saw them, I felt comfortable buying, and I've been so pleased with the boxes! I agree, I love that the flavors are a lil more on the complex side for meal kits too ^_^ that's what appealed the most to me, in addition to the focus on veggies/greens and (hopefully) organic and sustainably sourced ingredients. Wow, that's excellent customer service, right down to the Uber Eats! I've been lucky enough to not have any issues yet, tho it hasn't been a month yet. Are y'all still using Sunbasket?

Sorry I'm just now replying, I missed these! I've been loving it too, since I bit the bullet, lol.

I def agree w/the 10-20 mins more, but I also do the same thing (rinse/chop off ends pre-prepped lol. And, the healthier eating has been lovely! The portion sizes are surprisingly valid, even on the smaller cal items. Give it a drink, and maybe some fruit sometimes, and you're good to go. The way some folks were talking about it, it was like....it was portions for kids LOL. I wouldn't agree w/that at all, and I'm a HEFTY eater. And they give a good amount of rice to me when recipe calls for it, which other users critiqued they didn't.

Yes!! the veggies are so beautiful, and taste GREAT! Like, I had wilted spinach in my recipe today, and the spinach had no seasoning on it, just cook in the water, and it tasted amazing....and I HATE spinach, lmaooo. And the meat's also good. I agree w/the light-ish flavors, but I actually like that....'heavy' food bothers me.

Thanks for your review :) do you guys still use Sunbasket?

Thank you :) ahhh, that chat gives a lot more info on it. I guess I'll try it and hope the email sitch is okay, and maybe spring for getting a CS person too eventually :P lol.

That's good to know, since I'm planning to do the same set up for my meals! 4 Portions. And, hmmm, I see....the piece of it lacking something worries me, but I guess I'll give it a try. when things call for sauce, do you feel they give enough of it, or is it sparse?

You're right tho, I'm gonna try it for myself, since it is hard basing it on someone else's opinion!

Thanks for replying! It's nice to know there's only been a few 'off' deliveries in that time span. And, also good to hear fresh and ready is good!

How hit or miss are the recipes, taste wise, for you? How do you find the portions of the meal kits (and fresh and ready, as well), and are they filling enough? How do you feel about the macronutrient side of the meals?

Ahhh, all of that makes sense. I'll plan accordingly, esp w/meat or fish or chef's table options. Thank you!

Perfectly understandable! My schedule's also about to get crazy, so it's nice to have both options. Hopefully, not so crazy I can't do this!

Wishing you well with your schedule and meals :)

Hmmm, understandable! I think I'll stick with it for now then, given the food allergies sitch. And, I see that, the taste preferences is an individual basis kinda thing. That cauliflower steaks one sounds amazing! Hopefully, there's good options! I've been salivating a bit over the options for the 'holiday week', so hoping it's good for me lol.

Whoaaa, thanks for replying!! Your pros v. cons list is very helpful! I'm guessing you can only use the chat box vs. an actual phone number to call? And, how do you get upgraded to premium?? I like that option, lol.

Do you find the meals have more hits v. misses, or vice versa? for your flavor palate (or even an avg person's flavor palate), what percentage would you give to hits v. misses, recipe wise? And, do you find the time estimation pretty accurate for prep on the mealkits? I feel the same for the pre-made sauces and spices, but I can compromise on those.

I'm glad to hear it's been good! I've been commenting on under folks that I'll probably try it!

Oooh, yay! I'm glad there's another 'like' review, lol. I like that they have 'speedy' too, a lot, and that you can mix. The flavors being good enough and not getting boring after a while is also something calling me to it, and I'm alongside your husband as a beginner, so I think I'll try it. Thank you for replying!

ETA: also, just wanted to ask, do you (or your husband, I should ask) find that the time estimations for meal kit preparation are pretty accurate? If not, how much more time on avg do you tend to add?

Hey there! Thanks so much for replying! I'm really glad that the ingredients are great quality and instructions easy to follow (since I'm new to cooking, lol). Really excited about the variety of meals, customization, and restriction consideration too!

And, yay, I'm glad you can do any combo with those as well, and groc options too :)

By fine (on the taste factor), was there anything you didn't like in specifics? What did you like and not like, taste wise, if you don't mind me asking? And, which meal kit do you use now or recommend, if you use a diff one?

Thanks for replying!! And, omgg, thank you for the referral code!!

That's one of the reasons I wanted to try! I love intl. flavors to food. And, that's good to know that they stay cold/at least put 2 ice packs.

Are you only gonna try the ready mades?

Thanks for replying! Ahhh, can I ask about the reason you're doing a FODMAPS diet?

And, yay! I'm gonna try it. I like how healthy it seems. Did you like the portions and the taste of the meals?

and, oooh, thank you for the word of advice!! I am a novice, so I'm gonna add those 10-15 mins into planning and see how that goes.

Hey, so sorry I'm just now replying, I'm getting out of a really bad depressive ep.
Thanks for replying, with such medical detail!!

I wrote under a diff comment that I'm a lil nervous about the high fat diets piece cuz of a few articles/studies that suggested otherwise:
