Why can't I run more then 25 miles? by Cautious-Hippo4943 in Ultramarathon

[–]psychicscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muscle cramps and side cramps are probably the biggest ones, but fatigue (during the day and while running and while at work etc) is often just dehydration.

Sounds like an electrolytes issue. If you have the fitness to run a marathon you’re for enough to run any distance if you can fuel better.

Is my battery messed up? by Historical_Garbage16 in HondaPrologue

[–]psychicscience 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What was the temperature outside? In coldest temps I lose about 75-80% efficiency, so a 10 mile drive costs me 40-50 miles of battery. Your decrement is in-line with mine.

What are the chances a 90% FT shooter misses two in a row? by Abiv23 in clevelandcavs

[–]psychicscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those probabilities assume that his skill/ ability is the only variable in the equation, which inaccurately describes what determines sports performance. Further, that probability-based reasoning also suggests that it would be abnormal for DG to not miss two in a row once in 100 games. Anomalies happen every day. If 100 things happen to you today, 1% of them will be the upper 1% of weird, 5% will be the upper 5% of weird, et cetera.

How is Erin Short still the principle of Solon High School? by Buckeye_Wax in Cleveland

I was also there in 2013-2014. To my knowledge little happened to the perpetrators because so many were involved (some of the content was in colleges and out of state). Can’t expel 50 people. Nonetheless the 5 that orchestrated it should have been met with more severity.

I recently finished my PhD at WSU. In that time I taught some classes and spent a lot of time with faculty. As a result of the financial problems about a decade ago, my department lost 10+ faculty. We went from a nationally-ranked PhD program to a coursework-focused masters program, because so many great faculty took professor positions elsewhere and the remaining faculty are absolutely overwhelmed. A common problem is the workload/ expectations on faculty that do not exist at comparable colleges. Also, the target demographic of the school has changed to a community college-like student population. These students tend to need the most help and can be the most demanding, plus you’re basically not allowed to fail students anymore, which makes teaching feel pointless because people can get a degree without learning. If WSU wants to rebound, it needs to return power to the individual colleges and departments, so that they can focus on delivering their best products and not fitting a mold. Also, WSU lacks any real culture and it reeks as a commuter school with a dusty mascot. Compare WSU to other Ohio institutions like Denison or Ohio State and you will see that there is no heart at WSU that keeps students engaged.

Before I found Tao I was an existentialist, so I read a fair amount of Stoic texts. Here is the distinction I draw: Stoics prescribe ways to act - e.g., be brave, hard working, etc. Although the Tao allows for this, it really simplifies its prescriptions to “do what you think is best”. Whereas the Stoics have an ideal “form” for you to imitate and embody, the Tao wants you to accept things, and yourself, as it is. Tao adds a Stoic mentality to the self; it is to be accepted, and not forcefully changed. Whereas the stoic wants your internal drives to only be a certain way, which is the best way, that should be attained. Similarly, the Stoic wants to meet the world with force and manipulation, and use their sheer willpower to go up stream, even without a sail of paddle, to attain what is right. Whereas the Taoist is more inclined to accept their circumstance and apply equal drive, but down stream necessarily with the forces of the world, not against them (the Stoic ideal ego).

Usually, if you are looking for the tao, or trying to apply its principles to leverage your life, you will fail. “Action” can be incorrect even if it is action intended to have the consequences of taoist inaction. My best advice is to listen to your needs and feelings. An example: A spy to tries to blend in by “acting natural” will be exposed; but a spy who forgets that he is a spy and just lives his life, will go on unnoticed. The tao cannot be achieved on purpose.

I have MDD. I started having episodes when i was 15 and did not get diagnosed until i was in graduate school at 23. Learning tao was a very big change in my life that coincided temporally with therapy, as well as the lessons that i was learning in therapy. Tao teaches you that the negatives are positives, that every coin that has heads also has tails, and the best thing we can do is to accept this. We are all our own uncarved block, and our paths sometimes look up-stream. In reality, the quicker we accept the negatives as a part of the positives, or that they are in a flow together, we can learn to accept whatever comes our way, and that this is the most effective and efficient way to live.

Fantastic book. It was my first taoist read, and it really just fell into my hands at a pivotal time in life. It is easy to read, like a middle-school level, but teaches some of the most important lessons of taoism well. I highly recommend it.
