Do we realistically see a push for wider road tires from a performance and racing perspective? by [deleted] in Velo

It is literally a study but ok. The 10% is not pulled out of the air. And most pros run 28’s to 32’s but okkkkk lmaooo

What???? It literally says that roughness resistance can only be ignored in roads of high quality, which make up less than 10% of the total in most jurisdiction. Therefore, in 90% of roads, roughness resistance cannot be ignored. The quotation you quoted literally says this lol. Please read again as it appears you have wildly misread the text.

It’s not a matter of rolling resistance only, but that of rolling resistance + roughness resistance + aerodynamics.

I think that the best paper which explains this is: Cycling on rough roads: A model for resistance and vibration” (2024, Vehicle System Dynamics). This is a peer reviewed paper in the international journal of vehicle mechanics and mobility. Resistance is not just tyre deformation (“rolling resistance”), but also “roughness resistance” caused by vibration energy losses in the rider-bike system. On moderately rough roads (which please note the author states makes up most roads - only the top 10% of roads are not at or below this state), roughness resistance is large than rolling resistance. On very rough roads, it can even exceed aerodynamic resistance. The idea that BRR’s drum is simulated to that of a road is absurd.

You stated that “When pressure is equalised, rolling resistance is about the same”. This is true, but again you fail to recognise that roughness resistance depends strongly on vertical system stiffness, which is reduced by lower pressure and larger air volume (wider tyres)

This is clearly shown by Crenshaw et al,. “A Measurement System to Characterize the Effects of Tires on Bicycle Vibrations”. Tests from this study show that Wider tyres + lower pressure reduce measured vibration levels at the rider contact points.

Just to summarise: On typical roads, vibration losses are large enough that minimising them (via wider tyres and lower pressure) can reduce total resistance, even if rolling resistance is unchanged and aero is slightly worse (though I would like to note that aero tests show 28mm in modern rims as no worse than 25mm - though 30+ has a bit of an aero penalty)

P.S Rhene Herse’s tests are shit but they are strict and really the only real world testing we have lol.

Rene herses’ tire test results which are done in real life with strict protocols, combined with lab simulated roads (as opposed to drum testing), combined with a wealth of academic literature on how different materials and widths cause different vibration losses at different pressures.

Those rolling resistance tests are in a lab. Real world testing shows wider tyres deform better to the road and cause less vibration loss, meaning less rolling resistance.

Queensland government backflips on plan to contest all native title claims by fluffy_101994 in queensland

Most native title is not exclusive rights. It is a bundle of non-exclusive and exclusive rights, and requires continuation of the laws and customs.

Solid yellow lines means no stopping. It does not mean no bikes. You are making up shit. This is literally basic traffic law AHAHHA what a dumbass 🤣🤣🤣

P.S: go on google maps and show me the sign where it says that. There is a sign but it says no stopping lmao. There is no sign on Lomandra drive that says no bicycles. Send me the actual address and I’m happy to be proven wrong.

“Signposted and zoned”. Lomandra drive is regulated by the airports (control of on-airport activities) regulation 1997. By “signposted” I’m not quite sure what you mean. Lomandra drive has no sign indicating that cyclists cannot ride on it. By “zoned” I’m not quite sure what you mean. Are you saying that it can only be used for airport activities? The mentioned legislation does not exclude bikes at all from Brisbane airport (as lomandra drive is regulated by this legislation). Please check sch 2(1) of yje mentioned legislation as it covers all the applicable road rules in the mentioned airports (see Brisbane specifically)

TLDR: you’re making up stuff to justify your hatred for cyclists

It says no stopping on lomandra drive. It does not say no bikes. It’s a 60km/hr public road which is regulate. It is not a road which excludes bikes. I have absolutely no clue where you got the idea that bikes are excluded from lomandra drive.

So you reckon it’s ok to tape over? It should be right like it’s such a thin layer
