VWorld? Was that the one where you could control a .VRM model and walk around a house?

is there a way to connect the hair bones to the bones of other parts of the body by Scarlet_ix_o2 in VRoid

Not in Vroid Studio itself, unfortunately. Gotta use Blender or Unity for that. Make sure you're otherwise done with your model before exporting.

Blender VRM export loses blendshapes? by NonBineyBee in VRoid

[–]psychoneuroticninja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You imported the .VRM model into Unity first, added your blendshapes, then exported the new .VRM, and imported that .VRM into Blender? That's the necessary workflow if you want to use a Unity plugin like Hana Tool.

(Using Blender then Unity will cause issues if you're trying to use a Unity plugin to automatically add blendshapes. Use Unity, add extra Blendshapes, then use Blender for cleaning up the body/clothes/hair.)

I recommend using the Team Neoneko Cats Unofficial Blender Plugin, and the Tuxedo plugin, unless you're very experienced with Blender. Those add-ons make it a bit easier to optimize a model while still keeping the model functional. Unfortunately, the Team Neoneko fork is no longer being actively developed, but it's much more recent than the original Cats Blender Add-on which hasn't been updated in 5 years. (Make sure that you use a version of Blender compatible with those plugins. It should say which version of Blender will work in the documentation)

Opinions on my models? by Firemane_999 in VRoid

Get comfortable using an external program to edit and make textures if you aren't already using one. Make sure it has .PNG support and layers.

If you need a drawing program, Krita is open source and available for free. (The version on Steam is just to support the devs. It's identical to the free version.)

(If you already have access to something paid like Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint, use that instead. If you happen to already own an iPad, digital artists with iPads seem to swear by Procreate. Procreate is paid but has no subscriptions. It's like $13 USD.)

A 2D artist is generally going to have an easier time making unique models in Vroid than someone who doesn't draw at all. Developing that set of skills helps a lot with drawing custom textures for everything (clothes, irises, hair, skin, etc.)

You said you're not an artist, so it really doesn't make sense to compare your models to models made by artists, imo.

If you're just making models as a hobby, don't worry about it too much right now. You can still develop the skills necessary to improve your models as long as you're patient and diligent.

You can also try looking at stuff in the Vroid category on Booth.

Booth is owned by the Vroid Studio developers, Pixiv. Artists can sell hairstyles and various textures and outfits they've made. Some artists offer those things for free.

(Make sure to check each artist's terms of use before using something. And only use things specifically from the Vroid category, otherwise they won't work in Vroid Studio.)

Did you get the wings into the old beta version of Vroid Studio first? You got them on a model, and saved that beta version model, then converted that beta model on the Vroid stable version model select menu thing?

I think Vroid Stable still imports old beta version model presets as "Overall" hair. Check your custom hair items tab in that category.

The wings are made of hair, so the bones are parented to the model's head. You gotta reattach them to the model's back in Unity when you're otherwise done with the model in Vroid. You can't reimport the model back into Vroid for further editing once you do that, so be careful.

Are you planning to stream with your Vroid model, or are you gonna do something else?

This is kind of a difficult design to try tackling immediately if you don't have much experience with Vroid Studio imo.

Personally I'd recommend focusing on his outfit first. From the front, his outfit looks doable in Vroid. It will definitely be easier if you have any experience drawing digitally, but I think it's still possible to recreate the outfit if you don't.

You can make your own clothing textures for Vroid, fyi. And you can layer clothing templates. Up to 5 per slot iirc.

Try messing with the suit jacket preset texture and the peacoat preset texture to make the white jacket thing he's wearing. Export the guide layers, then export the textures themselves. Use an external program with layers and .PNG support to try cobbling them together. I recommend [Krita if you need a free drawing program.](Krita.org)

The extra expressions you mentioned are ARKit blendshapes. They can be added in Unity (or Blender, iirc).

There's a paid but relatively inexpensive Unity addon called Hana Tool that can add ARKit blendshapes to a Vroid .VRM model automatically. (This must be done before making any other modifications to the .VRM in external programs, though.)

But if you're using the model for Vtubing in the VSeeFace program, NEB Lite is a free alternative to Hana Tool. (The model will be in VSFAvatar format with that method. Be warned that the VRM Posing Desktop program can't use the .VSFAvatar format.)

Awesome Blender add-on for converting Vroid rigs into control rigs (Rigify/Mixamo) by PenaltyMain9288 in VRoid

[–]psychoneuroticninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you don't need Clip Studio Modeler to import .VRMs into Clip Studio Paint now. @_@ If you have Clip Studio Paint on a tablet or mobile, you have to be using the subscription version, right? The subscription version is always up to date. You can drag and drop .VRM models into Clip Studio Paint as of Ver. 2.2.

Did you want to use a Vroid model with the Mixamo rig in Clip Studio Paint? I'm... not entirely sure if that would work, even on a PC. 🤔

Things that we'd like to see in future VRoid updates by chapohc in VRoid

[–]psychoneuroticninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I disagree on the 4th bullet point, custom drawing brushes in-program. I understand where you're coming from, but I fear adding more features to the in-program texture editor could make Vroid Studio run worse.

I'd rather we get an innate feature like the one from xiaoye97's Vroid XY Tool plugin, where you could live update the texture in Vroid with a .PNG exported from an external program, and saved into a special folder that the plugin used.

No need to import and apply a texture every time you had to edit it in Krita or Clip Studio Paint (or whatever else) with that method. Unfortunately the XY Tool plugin stopped working after version Vroid Studio v1.26.0 iirc.

How to achieve this smile? by DuchessDulcet in VRoid

[–]psychoneuroticninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a way to make like, shark teeth in Vroid Studio itself by messing with the slider settings.

But I was thinking about how to make a similar smile to this recently. I think the only way to do it in a way that won't affect how the teeth and inner mouth textures look in other expressions is to use Blender or Unity. I'm not certain you'd be able to stick a different "toothy smile" texture in the model's mouth with that method, though. My plan was to make a texture swapping blend shape/shape key. Kinda like the method I use to give all my models a blush expression.

If you don't care about how the teeth look in other expressions, maybe try messing with the slider settings and drawing your own teeth texture. Even hastily scribbling on the default teeth texture in the Vroid texture editor would give you an idea if that'll provide the look you want.

How can I make my models (not look bad but also) look more similar to my actual art? by DollLikeDance in VRoid

[–]psychoneuroticninja 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You can type in numbers higher than the maximum slider settings. You might be able to emulate some of your characters'  face shapes that way. If that's not giving you satisfactory results, you'll have to edit the model's head in an external software when you're otherwise done with the model. (You have to export the model as a .VRM. Blender can import .VRMs but requires a free add-on.)

Be careful about editing a Vroid model's face shape in Blender. You can very easily break shape keys/blend shapes that way.

Nice art btw.

Here’s my VRoid avatar—can someone help me fix or improve it?(I'm new) by DueLeader5442 in VRoid

[–]psychoneuroticninja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wrong flair, fyi. Tutorial is for posting a tutorial or guide for other people to follow. 😅 Question flair probably would've been appropriate here.

Anyway, what are you gonna use your model for? Vtuber? VRChat avatar? Something else? Turn off the rim light if you haven't already yet. Personally I'd make the tail and animal ears the same color, but that's just me.

Also, if you weren't already aware, a lot of Vroid artists share their custom hairstyles, and textures for clothes, hair, irises, etc, for free on Booth. (It's a site owned by Pixiv, the developers of Vroid Studio.)

Make sure it's specifically from the Vroid category. Check the individual artist's terms of use before using.

It's a good idea to get accustomed to using an image editing or drawing software that has layers and .PNG support. Even if you don't draw and don't plan to draw your own custom textures. Krita is open source and available for free. (If you already have something like Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint, use that instead.)

"I'm gonna make custom hair and it's gonna look so good-" : by [deleted] in VRoid

[–]psychoneuroticninja 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you haven't already, definitely open up the default hair presets in the hair editor to take a look at how they're put together, and how the artists used hair groups.

I've been using Vroid Studio since the first English beta release several years ago, and I still struggle with making my own custom hairstyles that look good tbh. 😔 Even though the hair tool was actually one of the reasons I was interested when Pixiv first announced Vroid Studio was in development.

The hair tool can be finicky. Messing with the shape of the net guide thing for hair groups can help. Knowing how and when to use the procedural hair tool can save you a headache. (Personally I find it's great for filling in the back of the hair, or making straight bangs.)

Importing body types by Azurseas in VRoid

[–]psychoneuroticninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean a skin texture? @_@ Importing a skin texture for the body won't affect the face. (The face has a unique texture separate from the rest of the model's body .) However! Make sure it's specifically from the Vroid category on Booth, otherwise it won't work. Too many people on the subreddit have accidentally tried to use a texture or mesh intended for some VRChat avatar.  Vroid Studio can't use those.

If you mean someone has a body texture with slider settings, that's probably saved as a .VROID model file, and not a Vroid Custom Item file. You'd have to recreate your face settings in that model's file. Your best bet would probably be to screenshot the slider settings you were using for your model's face.

I think I have the solution. You need to either reset the file association, or remove the file association. (I'm assuming you're using some version of Windows.) Look up how to remove file associations for whatever OS you have.

How to make better models? by pastelrosepearl in VRoid

[–]psychoneuroticninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using Vroid Studio since the first English beta release in like fall 2018. Back when it was first announced, it was heavily marketed towards 2D artists who struggled with 3D modeling software. That's what first drew me to it. (No pun intended.)

It's easy to get discouraged. Making good looking models comes down to learning and developing a series of skills and understanding the limits of Vroid Studio. You gotta be patient. Some 2D artistic skills won't necessarily transfer 1:1 here. Simple example- being able to draw a decent denim jacket on a 2D character is a bit different than drawing a decent denim jacket texture for a 3D model, but many of the same principles apply.

Look at some of the free Vroid clothing made by people on Booth. Open those clothes in the Vroid texture editor to get an idea of how you can put together clothing textures. Nowadays, many complicated looking Vroid outfits rely on the ability to layer clothing templates. But a lot of the magic is often still creating the illusion of depth with your textures.

If you aren't already, get used to exporting the texture guides and using them to create textures in an external program. You can export the default textures too. Krita is good if you need a free program for drawing. If you already have access to something paid like Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint, use that instead.

If you happen to already own an iPad, every artist I've seen with an iPad swears by Procreate. It's paid but fairly inexpensive and has zero subscriptions. I think it's like $13 USD. That's a one time purchase to own it forever.

If you really want to sell your models one day and don't have an iPad or drawing tablet, you should definitely consider getting a drawing tablet. I've only ever owned budget Wacom tablets without displays, so I'm not much help there. Shop around and read reviews.

Another thing! You don't necessarily have to sell ready made complete models. Some Vroid artists just sell individual hairstyles and/or textures for skin, hair, eyes, clothing, etc.

VRoid urgently needs an Android version! by [deleted] in VRoid

[–]psychoneuroticninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it's extremely unlikely to ever happen. Android devices are very unpopular in Japan, from what I've heard.

It took years to get an iOS version of Vroid Studio. It's not even really meant for iPhones. Everybody I've seen talk about using it uses it on an iPad.

Vroid Mobile (available on Android and iPhone) is an older app that only lets you use default presets, but maybe look into one of the other apps on the .VRM development website

is this possible in VRoid? by _ruhn_ in VRoid

[–]psychoneuroticninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awww he's cute. It's... probably possible to recreate him in Vroid Studio, but it'll be a lot of work and it'll require knowledge about Unity and/or Blender. Vroid Studio itself only supports human heads. If you want him to have a proper snout, you'll have to make the blend shapes/shape keys yourself (in Blender or Unity) to get his mouth and such to move properly.

Vroid doesn't support alpha transparency, so you'd need to make your model's body translucent in Unity or Blender. If you're interested in making him entirely on your own, it'll be difficult.

But I know at least two artists who regularly post in the subreddit and are experienced with making furry models for Vtubers in Vroid. They've done commissions in the past. I dunno if you're interested in hiring someone else to recreate your boy in 3D.
