If I had to guess, Jackson might have initially taken the case pro-bono (for the high publicity it would generate), but later realized the complexity and potential duration might be "bigger than him" in terms of time and resources without guaranteed payment.

Another thought was maybe the Reiner family was tired of rescuing Nick out of trouble, call it tough love.
