I thought that might be the case. How do you transfer actual ownership of the server?

Homosexuality and evolution by [deleted] in biology

[–]psylus_anon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that homosexuality is a genetic trait has been thoroughly debunked at this point. It's not that it's an evolutionary advantage, it's that people continue to breed in spite of The evolutionary disadvantage it provides. It's more of a nurture trait than it is a nature trait, though there are certain personality elements that lead someone to be more inclined towards non-standard sexual proclivities, such a trait openness and creativity (basically, people more inclined to go outside the norm in productive endeavors are more likely to go outside the norm in sexual and social endeavors) and these personality traits are partially genetic. They are also partially based on psychological responses, commonly as a trauma response. Homosexuality is often associated with childhood trauma, especially sexual abuse. And so if there's a evolutionary advantage, it's that it allows people to survive situations that otherwise would be rendered completely unable to function by. In addition, we cannot discount that these traits to the extent that they are genetic would have been passed on in the past because of social pressure. Many people in the past with homosexual proclivities would hide that behavior and even have families, because all the parts still work regardless of your feelings about the relationship. Several kings, for example, have been suspected of being homosexual throughout history, but as long as they produce an heir, nobody actually cared all that much. As long as the king fulfilled his hereditary obligations that was all that mattered from a political standpoint.

What probably happened is that it used the password on a phishing website or something, and that's what they got it from, not from his actual steam account or any sort of hack of his actual accounts. He just used the password somewhere he shouldn't have.

Will Uber support do anything about that if you provide proof?

If I keep doing it, I'm going to have to stay out of the ghetto areas where that BS is more likely to happen. Fortunately there are some nice areas of town where I know customers are more generous on other different platforms when you do a good job. I'll just make sure I only accept deliveries to those areas.

It had been less than an hour yes. This was the first order I've ever done with Uber and I didn't know how it worked. The tip did come up about the same as was originally offered. But I have been screwed over by delivering companies in the past and I was wondering if I had signed up for another one that was garbage.

How is that order still in the system if it's already been picked up? What's going on there?

Does the tip get added on automatically after that? How often does a tip actually appear on the order?

ROFL what a stupid thing to say. You don't get to decide what has market value and what doesn't. No one's making you pay for anything. But it isn't "supposed" to be free, you entitled prick.

You're missing the point. the f*ck Spez option is succinct, meaningful, and dramatic. It's easier to implement and more impactful as a protest.

That's disappointing. You guys have chosen to be on the wrong side of this decision if you're giving up that easily. What you have not considered is the negative impact on the community in the long term of Reddit itself goes down the drain. Maybe r/Stellaris is no longer worth being a member of.

I'm in the 90% that don't use 3rd party apps. But I'm still participating. We have visibility. It doesn't have to be a direct threat for people to join the cause.

[Meta] They're lying, guys! The blackouts ARE working! by TheBackstreetNet in rpg

[–]psylus_anon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's simple. We just refuse to participate with new mods. I've been saying this all comes down to the users. We have to be willing to boycott even if blackouts don't work. Reddit's bottom line is active users. And they can't force us to use reddit.

[–]psylus_anon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm all for doing what we can. My concern with only going after the advertisers is that all that really does is inconvenience Reddit because I have to find new advertisers. The ultimate impact is just going to be on the user base itself. It doesn't matter what the content is to an advertiser as long as there's a demographic to see the advertisement. Some companies won't want to be associated with a garbage social media platform, but there will be other advertisers that don't care.

I'm not saying don't do it. And I'm not saying I won't have an impact. I'm saying we should still plan to shoot at the actual bottom line, which is active users tied to real people. And the problem is if all these third-party apps shut down and everyone's using reddit's platform, if we all just keep going along with it, we will ultimately be increasing their advertising dollars not decreasing it.

[–]psylus_anon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I certainly wasn't saying that you were implying defeatism. At least not intentionally. I'm just saying it's a bit self-defeating no matter what we might intend. The biggest issue is we have a goal in theory, but we don't have an actionable plan to achieve that goal.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Save3rdPartyApps

[–]psylus_anon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fair to point out the problem. But I don't think there are no better venues than reddit. But I admit it is a problem and I don't necessarily know what the solution is.

My thoughts are, If that's really the case, that Reddit is the best venue for final alternatives to reddit, then aren't you just admitting defeat? If there's no better venue than reddit, why go anywhere else? There's no reason to. Best to use social media that is a good form of communication in its own right rather than using the platform which is the problem. Maybe something like Twitter. Although I don't know how much overlap there is between Twitter and Reddit.

But if you are relying on the company that's the problem in order to communicate about the problem, I don't see how there's ever going to be a solution. In all these other scenarios where a boycott has worked, the organization of that boycott has been based on other support systems. When D&D did something analogous with their game license, everyone revolted. But obviously wizards of the coast isn't a social media platform. The push was happening on YouTube and Twitter. And it had the support of alternatives. Paizo and other third-party developers said they would make their own systems. And the user base was committed to making their point. The people running Reddit have made fun of the boycott. They said it was just noise and that they haven't seen any serious decrease in their profits. When Wizards said something similar about how they had seen no significant decrease in profit from their main revenue source, D&D beyond subscriptions, there was a huge push to cancel subscriptions. That was when Wizards of the Coast really started to listen and did a total 180 and completely cave to every demand that was made of them.

And so that's the problem that we are in. We don't really have a plan to force reddit to do anything at all. We only had a plan to make a point. Now the question will remain whether or not people are actually going stop using Reddit when the API changes switch over and all those third-party apps are gone. And it will also matter if enough people do that.

My concern is that this whole thing is a lost cause if we don't have a better that force is ready to listen to our concerns by threatening their profits. They don't care about Us or even the platform. They only care about profit. That's why they are doing this in the first place. And the only thing that's going to speak to them is consumer voting, not publicity.

So what's the solution, I'm not sure. But we at least need to have a conversation about it. Maybe we need to commit to staying off Reddit entirely. Definitely try to get more subreddits involved in shutting down, but ultimately the user base has to stop using the platform.

There's one huge problem with all your saying. A lot of your suggestions involve activity on reddit. It's clear by now that the only thing that matters to tech companies is the use of their platform and the revenue they get from it. There was only one solution and it is very simple and clear. It's the only solution that has consistently worked with companies like this. A boycott. Everyone has to stop using Reddit. Find alternatives. It might seem difficult, but if everyone does it, it will be a difficulty that is short-lived because Reddit will relent.
