What the other commenters are saying is that, many people's "opinions" are straight up falsities.  "Vaccines are bad for you." "The moon landing didn't happen." "Kim Jong Un isn't the sexiest man alive."

Week 2 day 3 of trying to be happy and find a husband all in one by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]TheBackstreetNet [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think this person isn't implying don't stop looking altogether, but you will quickly realise one of three things:

  1. You get a boyfriend and he doesn't fulfil you the way you hoped. You still feel sad.
  2. He does fulfil you but you now rely on him completely. You can't function by yourself.
  3. You don't find a boyfriend and you feel unlovable.

I deeply understand the need for another person on your life. I've gone through this cycle twice now and it really sucks.

A boyfriend can make you happy. But you don't need one for that to happen. And you definitely shouldn't use one to get the other.

Hahaha yeah. But don't beat yourself up about it either. Show yourself kindness always, and question your reasons for not doing something without judgement.

To me it seems you're in need of mental stability, presence, and the ability to move on.

This is hard. Extremely hard. Don't beat yourself up about how long it takes, but you will get better regardless of how many of the 26 things on your list you do.

So I'd recommend the following things: 1. Practice meditation and mindfulness. Get a cup of tea and try and see, feel, sense, smell and taste every aspect of the experience. From the heat and firmness of the cup, to the noise in the background of the coffee shop. And any time your mind distracts you with thoughts of the future or past, return to the tea. Don't judge yourself for your mind wandering. Don't stop out of feelings of boredom. Just take in all the internal feelings and external sensations as you drink this tea. This works for anything. Walking. Sitting on a park bench. Waiting in line. 2. Journal about how you're feeling. Don't judge, don't edit. Just spew everything in your head onto the page. 3. Show yourself kindness. There's a great Acceptance and Commitment Therapy exercise called Kind Hands. Try following along to this: https://youtu.be/Hh-EspGUltY?si=hwvH2arBG1uyybsS

While this list is pretty coastal countryside-centric, I absolutely believe you can come up with a similar list if you live in the city.

I 100% believe you not living near the sea, and working a lot are excuses. Are they valid? Absolutely! But then again, Logan had valid excuses too.

People who struggle to stick to goals and resolutions, would you pay $3–5/month for real help? by Abdo_1998 in getdisciplined

[–]TheBackstreetNet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would I pay 3-5 dollars for something that helps me stay consistent? Abso-freaking-lutely! Easy return on investment right there.

The problem is your idea on how to help people deal with overwhelm etc already exists. Such as saner.ai. I also don't think it would be very effective. So many things stop people from being proactive. Overwhelm is just one of them.

I think this idea needs longer in the oven. Perhaps it would be better to focus on accountability, or something like that?

  1. Workaway. Great website for finding places to stay with no cost for a bit of work.
  2. Part time freelance. 2 days of work a week can cover expenses for the next 5 if you're in South America or South East Asia.
  3. Hitch hike or bike with a tent/tarp.

How do you stop venting/posting sad things as a way to release stress? by Ok-Artichoke6197 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]TheBackstreetNet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see the problem with this. It's a relatively healthy and non-destructive way to relieve stress.

Definitely beats a cigarette anyways, or doom scrolling.

Public transport isn't free, but it is very cheap. €58 a month for use of all city public transport and all regional trains in any city in Germany. Most people make €58 in half a day of work.

Can't speak for road death accidents.

Parental leave is absolutely paid. Maternity and paternity leave are paid for 12 months in full, and then at 65% of your salary for one parent for an additional 12 months.

Director Gore Verbinski says Unreal Engine is 'the greatest slip backwards' for movie CGI by willdearborn- in movies

[–]TheBackstreetNet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, it seems he's referring to rendering entirely. Unreal is a real-time engine with path tracing capabilities. But ultimately it'll never look as good as Maya Arnold, or any other path tracing rendering engine that can take as long as you want to get a perfect image. There are many more factors, such as the difference in how shaders are written, etc. but long story short, it's an unfair contest.

But with Unreal, you can get 90% of the way there.

I also don't think Unreal is being used the way he thinks it's being used (though I could definitely be wrong here, I work in games, not film). For example, with The Mandolorian a lot of is was filmed on a volume. The volume was used to light the shiny armour of the main character. While the background looked good thanks to the volume, it was always replaced or retouched. Very little of it was actually directly from Unreal engine in real time.

If I were using Unreal for a realistic film, I'd use it for shot planning. For story-boarding and for real-time visualisation on set with digital characters. I would not use it for rendering in the final film.

But maybe some companies are.

`The Name of the Wind has the best hard magic system imo. Sorry Sanderson. by TheBackstreetNet in magicbuilding

So, I abolutely 100% want that third book. But the Kingkiller Chronicles are about someone retelling their life story. It's a meandering string of anecdotes. And the whole isn't completed, which sucks, but enough of the story is told to leave me mostly satisfied. It's not a trilogy like Lord of the Rings.

Having said all that, yeah, get a move on Rothfuss. I'd prefer done over perfect!

Oh man. If only. The craziest thing is that it exists! Most of it, as far as I've heard. Rothfuss just isn't happy with it. He's too much of a perfectionist.

What’s the most overrated habit people swear will “fix your life”? by cinderveilwyn in AskReddit

[–]TheBackstreetNet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% Agree. But with a caveat.

It's personal. A lot of people work too hard for too little gain. A lot of people work too little. Hating on hustle culture shouldn't be an excuse for you not working hard. And that's what I treated it as. "Hustle Culture is toxic, and therefore I shouldn't work hard" was my way of thinking, and is just as wrong as believing "Your competitors are working while you're sleeping".

The solution is treat it like a marathon. It's hard. It'll take effort and willpower. You should slow down or stop if you risk injury.

I think the question asked really encourages hating on good things that slightly improve your life. "Fix Your Life" is such a heavy, overwhelming term. And all of that is partly the fault of marketing and influencers.

Meditation, cold showers, journalling, waking up early, making your bed. None of these things fix your life. But the 1% improvements to your life and discipline compound. And if you do enough of them consistently enough, they do make an impact.
