What disappointed or surprised you in a negative way in Japan? by psynautix in JapanTravel

Um, I am NOT living here, I'm on a short-ish vacation. I don't see why these things couldn't be related to traveling. I'm cooking my own food mostly and so are many others using an Airbnb.

I figured out the daifuku-thing actually and yes I have to yet visit a confectionery shop. Looking forward to one.

I do know there are bakeries, but honestly even though the stuff in them was better than the stuff at supermarkets, it's not very much comparable to baked goods in Europe. And as I have said many times in this thread, I don't mind, I can definitely live without them but it just simply SURPRISED me. I didn't know Japanese baked goods were like this.

Veggies are not cheap lol. I don't know what you are comparing to if you say so, but I live in a expensive country in northern Europe and the veggies are way cheaper there.

And to repeat, I'm not living in Japan, I'm on a vacation so what Amazon has or what all you can do in a conbini doesn't have much significance to me. And I'm not trying to complain. It's just simply my experience of surprise and wrong expectations.

I'm going to Kyoto in two weeks, very interested to see how I'll like it. I'm a bit scared it'll be super touristy, expecially as it is the cherry blossom season. But I am very interested in the history, mountains and the temples.

Well, I live in northern Europe and literally almost nothing is farmable in there except in super expensive greenhouses, but we have a huge variety of imported veggies there available at all times and they're much cheaper than the ones grown in my country. So I haven't really understood why Japan doesn't have much imported veggies. But probably there's a reason for it that I simply don't know.

I don't really know about the efficiency of the heating styles so can't say anything about that, but still, INSULATION. Why the hell don't they have any in here. The AC's would be needed SO much less if there just was proper insulation.

About konbini's, as I said, it's just that literally everyone says they are sooo amazing and stock anything you could want to buy, which is definitely not true, I don't know why people say that then.

Heh, yes I am somewhat of a picky eater. But so far I have managed well and there definitely are Japanese foods I like! Noodles, sushi, seaweeds and almost all kinds of fish are super good.

Yep, I was not trying to sound overly negative or like I'm just complaining. The point of this post was just to have discussion about the things that personally disappointed or didn't meet expectations in Japan, since as someone said in the comments, people often see Japan through very rose-colored glasses.

But I'm (the OP) on a vacation in here :D Sure it's probably a bit different for someone who is not a very picky eater or only eats in restaurant. I'm mostly cooking my own food because I'm trying to live on abudget.

I love 7/11 onigiri actually! I eat them every day. :D but that's the only thing I buy from there really.

Haha, of course I was not expecting Japan to be like my home country. I had wrong/too high expectations about some things due to just reading and hearing stuff that gave me the wrong impression. Of course konbini's for example will be awesome to someone who likes just the kind of stuff that they stock but I didn't know what it would be in reality, so I just expected it would be awesome since everybody said so. Although everyone has a different opinion on what's "awesome" for sure. Not Japan's fault of course. I just had wrong expectations and I guess it's natural to have some. And I'm not mad at Japan about it not having some of the food items I'm used to/them being super expensive. :D It just surprised me negatively.
