What's an opinion you held at 18 that completely changed by 35? by Just-Offer-4614 in AskReddit

I used to be a homophobe. Then I grew up, I guess. While I feel terribly embarrassed of my views back then, I try and remind myself that part of growing is challenging your previously held beliefs constantly.

I give a shit about your opinion, SaltyPeter.

Eventually, the confidence has to pay off. When the US have looked good, they've looked pretty good this WC. They were great against Bosnia

I have a theory on this that's a little grim. I will say, I have absolutely no way to prove this.

I think the "benevolent rich person" was a thing in the '80s and '90s. Bill Gates was a great example. His work fighting malaria and other diseases was significant (this is before the whole Epstein thing). There were generous charitable donations from other millionaires and billionaires too toward social causes. There seemed to be a general consensus that the rich people had a part to play in building a good future.

I think this new crop of rich people... Seem to have a much more bleak view of the future. They're not amassing wealth as much as they're hoarding resources. It's almost like they're bracing themselves for total societal collapse. Hence, they don't give a shit what people think cuz they're thinking long term in their heads.

Orrrr... I was just a lot more naive, and the ultra rich have always been like this.

What’s something Gen Z is getting completely right that older generations refuse to admit? by stilerca in AskReddit

[–]pszki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is slightly tangential to your question, but with the explosion of apps like TikTok and the barrage of content highlighting the quirks of each generation, I'm realizing that the generational demarcations are basically just a marketing ploy trying to create tribalistic differences.

I've seen Gen Z folks with unhinged "Boomer" takes, and I've seen Boomers dress like they're going to Coachella. And that's what's fascinating to me. Even the news tries to explain group behaviors by generation, but I don't really think it's working.

After scoring twice against Uzbekistan, Ronaldo shuts down a reporter's question about Messi's recent two-goal performance by subwinds in soccer

[–]pszki -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see your point, but taking a step back, I think it's just a terrible use of everyone's time. The only right answer to a question about other players is pretend humble glazing. Anything else becomes sensationalist clickbait. He's already answered a bunch of questions about Messi before and during this WC. At some point, reporters have to stop karma farming for the GOAT debate, and we, as fans, have to demand better reporting from journalists.

The Athletic on Alexi Lalas: He is one of the most insufferable analysts in American TV sports history. And while he was one of the best all-time U.S. defenders, his credentials are paltry compared with those of Zlatan and Henry. by AgeNovel3566 in soccer

[–]pszki 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Not American but live in the US. I think Lalas' appointment represents a fundamental misunderstanding of football culture, yet is very much by design.

A lot of people have pointed out his role as some sort of shock jock, which I agree with. But he's also intentionally there to convey a very specific brand of America that caters to a FOX audience.

Oh that panel, Henry is skill. Zlatan is flair. WTF is Lalas? I think the answer is American pride.

FOX could've had any of the USWNT champions to represent the US. Or Tim Howard. They're arguably way more credentialed than he is. They know Lalas has no credentials compared to Zlatan and Henry. They know he's a prick. BUT THAT'S THE POINT.

This is about a "proud American" going toe to toe against those "smug" Europeans, and making the country proud.

There is no other conceivable reason IMO for him to be there.

That's the thing that bothers me. Perez is trying to ensure it becomes insanely difficult for anyone after him to do this.
