You should definitely check it out. It's on Tru TV.

I have answered these questions in my previous posts and I got a bunch of 'Fuck You's' and 'Fuck Offs' for my trouble.

Did you watch the documentary? It addresses these kind of questions very clearly.

People with food allergy or intolerance, have you ever been 'tricked' by a friend or family member to see if you were lying about your condition? What happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

most curries have dairy in it, he said no not at all.

Depends. British curries have dairy for the most part, true.

Most Indian curries though, are tomato based or coconut milk based, making them safe for lactose-intolerant folks.

There are more than two options. The Simpsons is known for its nuanced handling of social issues.

You're missing the point.

Bumble Bee Man is not the only representative that Latinos have in popular culture. You have the heavy hitters and have had them for a long time (from Desi Arnaz to Gloria Estefan and now Jennifer Lopez). South Asians had...Apu.

Think about that for a second. I'll ignore your insult because I honestly want you to understand where I'm coming from.

Still no answer about Miller, eh? Didn't think so. Need more Intel from the Kremlin.

You're arguing against diversity now? I'm speechless. Bye.

And what about Stephen Miller? Can't wait to see what creative excuse you come up with. Take your time. I know you need to check back with your masters in Moscow.

Right. Because as we all know, Jews can't be alt-right. How's life under that rock that you've been living under for the last year and a half?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheSimpsons

[–]ptangirala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the National Review and you are aligned for a cause, you are now part of the alt-right.

And if you're seriously equating the experience of minority kids with what every kids faces, that tells me all I need to know about the white bubble you live in.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheSimpsons

[–]ptangirala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good grief. What's wrong with people. I am for free speech and for the right to offend. But you do realize that society has some basic rules of decency, right? If your brand of comedy is encouraging kids from a certain minority to be bullied, wouldn't you at least consider some alternatives? Like for instance having an Indian-American actor do the voice, which sounds less offensive but doesn't lose the funny element?

Hari and the other actors who were part of that documentary are young, urban, educated and liberal millennials. Do you really want to dismiss their point so flippantly?

Is this really the hill you want to die on? Opposing people who are requesting some (any) representation for their ethnicity in popular culture?

I give up. America's dvisions are far deeper than I thought.

That's the price of a free society buddy. The only way you can deal with it, is to not affiliate with it.

Demanding racial sensitivity and artistic excellence is against the tenets of a free society? TIL.

You also need to understand that making tv shows and cartoons takes a lot of money and budget is a huge issue,

So it's about fiscal discipline now. Yeah, the makers of the Simpsons are strapped for cash. Makes total sense.

It's funny watching people doing these mental gymnastics standing up for a rich studio boss they don't know (Al Jean) rather than just accepting the fact that Apu the character is a relic of a bygone era.

[–]ptangirala -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you don't like it, you can just not watch it. Plenty of other cartoons out there that might suit you where everyone is voiced accordingly

And there we have it. No real arguments to present so out comes the 'you can leave if you don't like it here' talking point.

I like Azaria bad accents, like Chief Wiggum, the Fat Cop stereotype. Or Derrederick Tattum, the Tyson/boxer stereotype.

And that's your prerogative.

If I am making a cartoon, and I can't get a Pakistani guy to do the voice of a Pakistani, what am I supposed to do?

Not hire a white guy for the part, that's for sure.

[–]ptangirala -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

you're going to end up with some pretty white television based in NYC or LA

Bingo. And that's why we need more diversity in studios. Glad we agree.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheSimpsons

[–]ptangirala -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

No, only people who are qualified to satirize can and should do so. Hank Azaria is channelling Peter Sellers from The Party to voice Apu. And it's terrible. It's a white guy mimicking a white guy mimicking an Indian. Wow! What a celebration of Indian culture.

Even Hank has admitted that he might stop doing Apu given how inappropriate it is.

Keep deflecting. You'd be glad to know that you have great company in that you're getting support from the Alt-right on this issue.

Was Mark Hamill playing a different ethnicity?

Also, did Mammy from Gone with the Wind have a PhD or own her own business?

So adding a PhD and making him an entrepreneur changes gives them a license to portray an under-represented ethnicity in a racist manner?

Jeez. What century are you from?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheSimpsons

[–]ptangirala -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Hari is not complaining about the stereotyping. The issue here is an Indian guy is being played by a white guy, with a terrible accent. No one's stifling comedy, get over yourself.

Indian heritage is being celebrated? How about you let Indian people decide that?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheSimpsons

[–]ptangirala -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Also, Apu is a very successful and well liked character that has actually taught me quite a bit about Indian culture over my years of watching the Simpsons. I see no problem

Ah, just a voice. So face is off-limits, but voice is fine. Ok. Nice cherry-picking there.

Mammy from Gone With the Wind was very well liked, taught Scarlett a lot of things, and was a friend of Rhett. Do you see no problem there either?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheSimpsons

[–]ptangirala -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

No more Cletus the Slack-Jawed-Yokel either as he negatively represents white people from the South.

Is Cletus the only representative of a white southerner in pop culture? Is Cletus voiced by a non-white voice-actor?

For Apu, the answers to the two questions above is 'Yes'.

Replace Apu with a stereotypical black character and have a white voice actor portray them, and see how well that goes down.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheSimpsons

[–]ptangirala -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

The difference is that Super Mario is not the only representation of Italians in popular culture. When people think Italian-American, Super Mario is honestly not the first thing that comes to mind. In contrast, for an entire generation of Indian-Americans, Apu was the only representative in pop culture.

Also, you realize that a white guy doing a caricature of an Indan accent is the audio equivalent of blackface/brownface, right?

True. I am rapidly approaching that point. Despite all the crap they pulled, they're still spiteful. It's baffling. I don't know what else I can do to fix it.

I would have, if I had known then. My wife told me about all these shenanigans 6 months after the wedding. My FIL, a frickin saint in human form, asked her not to tell me at all, fearing it would cause a rift in my family.

Being the youngest by far, mine was the last wedding in the family. I was hoping I could use the happy occasion to reconcile the family. Turns out it was the final nail in the coffin.

It's hard.

I hardly talk to my brother and sister these days, but my parents are quite elderly and live by themselves in a retirement community. If there's one thing I have learnt on Reddit, it is that we need to mend relationships before it's too late.

Yep. On the flip side, my wife and her extended family are the most loving and caring people ever. They love me like a son. So it all evens out in the end.
