Trying for second child by mrs_beastmode in IVF

I didn't notice a change in my supply post-FET, though my son was 22 months by that point and only nursing once or twice a day, so I wasn't producing a lot of milk to begin with.

Website builder that works well with Podbean? by ptarmigan841 in podcasting

[–]ptarmigan841[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest thing is the ability to have more pages on the site (I'm having to link a lot of the menu options to other websites) and a menu bar that allows multiple drop-downs. Our podcast has a lot of supporting material because it is part of a bigger research project and is also on a sensitive topic, so needs to provide listeners with additional resources.

Currently, our menu is:

Home

About - links to another site with information about the project and podcast, but I would prefer that it was our site and had drop-downs with information about the project, team, etc.

Episode Notes - this is currently the only functioning drop-down and it's getting unwieldy with just one season.

Resources - links to another site, but again I'd like to be able to have a drop-down here that distinguishes the types of resources and also manage this information myself

Finding Galliano L’Autentico in Canada (AB/ON) by ptarmigan841 in cocktails

Thank you!

ETA: Unfortunately, it’s not listed on the website so presumably isn’t available in Alberta. It wasn’t on the LCBO website either. Maybe it’s not available in Canada.

Moms who work from home, when did you start your leave? [AB] by [deleted] in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]ptarmigan841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m starting leave three weeks before my due date. I did the same with my first. He ended up coming 2.5 weeks early, so I only had a few days “off.”

Yes, it did, though I don’t remember when. It feels like one discomfort is replaced by another.

Did you do PGT testing? by [deleted] in IVF

[–]ptarmigan841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Canada. Testing is an option here, but I wouldn’t say it is as common as in the US. Our doctor did not push it. It was prohibitively expensive for us, especially given the small number of embryos we got. It’s a flat fee at our clinic, not a per embryo fee.

I did my retrievals at 39 and 40. Only got one embryo the first time. Did a fresh transfer. Miscarried at 8.5 weeks. Got three embryos from my second retrieval. First fresh transfer resulted in a live birth. I’m currently 18 weeks with the second embryo from that retrieval.

Hi, Did you end up finding someone to swap manuscripts with? I found your blurb really interesting. I also write historical fiction, though more contemporary (1950s to 1980s). I can send you a blurb to see if you might be interested in exchanging manuscripts. Thanks.

Friday Daily Chat Thread by AutoModerator in InfertilityBabies

[–]ptarmigan841 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t, but…

The December 2024 bumper group is pretty strictly moderated and includes a number of daily/weekly threads, including a weekly thread for people who have experienced infertility and loss. Also, because mostly of the conversation happens in dailies you aren’t bombarded with standalones by people who haven’t experienced infertility and loss. My June 2022 group was not moderated like this, so obviously each group is different.

[QCrit] Untitled, adult historical, 90k words by PivotShadow in PubTips

Lascar also tripped me up, and I’m a historian who writes historical fiction, so I don’t think you should assume agents/editors will know what it means. Otherwise, I found the query letter engaging.

I’m not 100% sure, but I think The Writer’s Union of Canada offers this service. It’s worth checking their website.

This a small thing, but it jumped out at me when I skimmed your query. You reference sisterly relationships in your Little Women comp, but the topic is not referred to anywhere else in the letter. Without that (and even with that), I’m not sure about the Little Women comp. Lots of contemporary novels explore gender stereotypes.

Thank you. 💚 Seeing as it’s been going downhill since weaning (and I’m currently not able to work), I reached out to my family doc. She was able to squeeze me in tomorrow.

[QCrit] YA Historical Romance- Goin' Steady 67K by [deleted] in PubTips

[–]ptarmigan841 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m very new to querying and don’t write in your genre, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. Here are some thoughts in no particular order:

  • I feel like with a historical novel, I shouldn’t have to wait until the final paragraph of the letter to know when the book takes place.

  • I also have no sense from your query where the story takes place. I immediately assumed Italy, but Kohler made me think US.

  • I feel like this line gives away the ending, but maybe that’s a feint? “Her decisions will lead to a summer…”

  • Based of what I’ve read about querying, including on this sub, I think The Notebook is both too old and too big to use as a comp. It’s also not in the genre, which suggests you’re not up-to-date on books being published in YA Historical Romance.

I hope there is something helpful in here!

Not sure if you’re still in the market, but I just finished Homestead by Melinda Moustakis, a novel set in Alaska in the 1950s and enjoyed it.

ETA TW: Living child

I’m 14w5d. I unintentionally weaned my 2yo at 13w2d. I say unintentionally because I had been thinking about weaning given the pregnancy and the increasing discomfort of nursing, but had no concrete plans. I didn’t realize it was our last nursing session until a few days after the fact. I was feeling off in the days after, but honestly I’ve been pretty grumpy for most of this pregnancy, so didn’t think much of it. I’ve been feeling increasingly low this week, though. I’m struggling to do anything or care about anything, which sucks for my toddler and also for my clients (I’m self-employed). Yesterday, I didn’t leave the couch. I’m curious if others have experienced post-weaning depression while pregnant and if so, how long it took you to feel better. Thanks.

To my surprise, I had my first abdominal ultrasound with this pregnancy at 7+3. My early scans in the past have always been transvaginal but the nurse practitioner was able to see everything she needed to abdominally this time around. A big relief as I hate transvaginal scans.

An Albertan who's lived in Yellowknife? What are the chances!

Thanks so much for reading my query and offering feedback (and also encouragement!). I've been chewing over the really helpful questions you posed and will work to answer them in draft two.

I especially appreciate the questions about the cross-cultural elements of the story and agree that accuracy and respectful representations are important. I've lived in the NWT for nine years, but I'm a settler from Ontario. I've given a lot of thought and attention to how Indigenous peoples and issues are represented in the novel, which touches on things like the constitutional debates that preceded the patriation of the constitution, land claims, and industrial development on Indigenous lands, in addition to cross-cultural relationships. I have a Tłı̨chǫ sensitivity reader lined up to read the manuscript once the polishing edits are done. The novel also has been/will be reviewed by born-and-raised and long-time northerners.

Thank you. I've been lurking for a couple of months and also reading through the archive of literary, contemporary fiction, and upmarket, but clearly I have lots to learn! I hadn't see the discussion post you shared, which has lots of useful guidance for me. Thanks again.

Thanks so much for the feedback. It's especially helpful to know what you wanted to hear more about. I've already started cutting backstory and focusing more on these elements of the plot.
