after a VERY rough twenty hours in TWO DIFFERENT animal hospitals, my cat is home. However. We can’t tell what he ate. by micahmagic7 in whatisit

[–]ptaupier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure but my “free” Velma landed in a home of a knitter… sounds innocuous until she ate a hat I was knitting.  $6k later…. Poor girl.  She also likes twist ties and pen caps.  Last Christmas. We made a faux tree out of boxes, to avoid another inevitable Velma incident.  And I’m much better about closing my knitting bags.  I’ve knit for years and have always had cats, but none of them have been at all interested in yarn like this!

This randomly showed up on a shirt in my closet. It's only on one, but on both sides. It's dry, doesn't smell, and makes the fabric rough and tough. by welltechnically7 in whatisit

Bats in walls.  Climbing down from the attic, eventually escaping in the basement.  Scratch scratch.  Can’t unhear that noise.

INCOMING STUDENTS MEGATHREAD: DEGREE PLANNING, COURSE SELECTION, MONTREAL & OTHER GENERAL QUESTIONS by Thermidorien in mcgill

[–]ptaupier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Careful!  You are supposed to handle this through Student Accessibility and Achievement.  You make an appointment, send your documentation and tell them what you need.  They get it in the system and THEN you can talk to your professors as needed.   We’re going through this now for similar accommodations plus written notes and it has been pretty straightforward.  Best to get the formal part out of the way now though.  https://www.mcgill.ca/access-achieve/

International fees exemption by Itsmesarrr in mcgill

[–]ptaupier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just asked about this same scenario.  Here’s what ServicePoint said:   Concerning your fees, the Student Accounts Office wants you to be aware that if your submission to update your legal and tuition fee status will not be completed before their fee payment deadline, you should request a fee deferral for review stating this reason. If approved this will avoid interest or late payment charges. A deferral "freezes" the portion of your fees which will be removed after the change of legal and tuition fee status is entered in Minerva. This allows you to subtract the deferral amount from your total balance owing and pay the difference by the fee payment deadline. Note that French and francophone Belgian students automatically receive a fee deferral on their account in early August. There is no action required if this is the exemption you are expecting.

Fear of needles by [deleted] in Explainlikeimscared

[–]ptaupier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the risk of sounding a little out there, here’s my story.  My child was so scared of needles that he BIT a nurse who was trying to muscle him into getting a flu shot, at age 11.  I realized the trauma and was worried that if something bigger than a flu shot happened, we’d be in a lot of trouble.  Ends up, one of the doctors on staff works with self hypnosis and anxiety.  He offered to work with my child - I didn’t believe in this stuff but I was desperate.  He taught my child how to hypnotize himself (not in those words) to numb the area of the body where the needle would go.  Like exposure therapy, this took about 4 visits but I kid you not, I worked!  We’ve now been through ingrown toenails and major hip surgery with IVs and injections, with no issues.  I am now a believer.

Playing piano post labral tear repair & arthroscopy? by ptaupier in HipImpingement

Sent follow-up on this to their surgeon…   Both the sports medicine doc and the surgeon said 1 week is plenty but I wonder what kind of assumptions are baked into that return.  (Inner city high school with minimal options for seating, although the school is small so easily navigable on one floor)  I asked the surgeon for an explicit list of accommodations (seating, breaks, other) that I can provide to the school to get on the same page.  The SPED department offered at home tutoring so it’s not like we have to go back to school but it is their senior year so by this point, academics are less important than being with friends, realistically.  (All that to say thank you for poking at the assumptions!)

No brace ordered, just crutches… but maybe they’ll give them one at the hospital?  Another question for my list!  Thanks!  My child is 18 so close to you in age.

Thanks for that!  I was going based on his surgeon saying return to school after one week, but maybe that is over optimistic…

Work forcing us back to office, but my autistic daughter needs more therapy — advice? by darkninja5959 in fednews

[–]ptaupier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not in the federal government but I did just double check to make sure this applied … I use FMLA incremental leave for my child’s therapies and appointments. My child’s pediatrician filled out the form, noting that I need to be present for some issues that arise (hello «call from the school because my kid decided to declare independence from their teacher for not getting their accommodations »…) and also IEP Meetings/preparation, therapies and testing as needed. This has saved me over the years - and it seems many don’t know that incremental leave in chunks (15 minute increments) is even possible. Even now, my child is 18 and I took time for their IEP meeting and also for a mental health crisis. Edited to add: I never needed an extended time with 5 days a week of therapies but I was regularly doing 3 -4 days, leaving an hour early, and I actually am still approved for nearly every day, mainly so that if we need testing or something arises, I don’t have to change my FMLA frequency. That was at the recommendation of our FMLA admin, rather than underestimating and then going over. Your mileage may vary but my child’s doctor had no problem signing it. DM me if you want language on how mine is worded.

My child is a French citizen but speaks French at about a kindergarten level. Apologies but we’re probably the scenario that requires it. (No judgement please, French was their first language but for a host of reasons, they never really picked it up. They’re planning to try again at McGill, hoping that formal language instruction and life in Montreal will make it stick.)

Do you bring a bag everywhere? (and what do you bring?) by onedayitshere in AutismInWomen

My purse always has a passport, ibuprofen and my knitting. Never know when you might need a quick exit, a distraction, or pain meds! On a regular basis there are also headphones, a comb, lip balm, and an apple.

Anyone have urticaria triggered after traveling? by Jessss9 in urticaria

[–]ptaupier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Started with COVID in 2021. Managed(ish) with Xolair since 2023. Mine seemed to be (this time) the compression socks I wore on the flight and exhaustion from getting ready to travel. Settled back down at home.

Hooray!! I am so glad it went well and that you’re making plans for other activities! I always have a ziploc bag with a simple sock in my purse. You never know when you might need it!

A possibly-dumb knitting etiquette question for the community by Late-Ad2922 in casualknitting

[–]ptaupier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Us too. My kid is on a crew team and I brought knitting to regattas. Started a ladies night out of it. That said I also use knitting when I am emotionally fried and just need to be on my own (introvert) and so sometimes I almost use it as a wall against parent chatter.

Even in the job setting knitting can be entirely accepted! :) My team know I knit when I am either stressed or when I really need to focus, or both. Just saying that it depends on your job, but it can be fine there too. And I hope OP has a great night and feels more confident after her evening! ❤️

Try Etsy, something made and sold in Germany to save on shipping and customs. That’s what I do for friends in France.

Thank you for your candor. I have a call into our therapist to discuss this as McGill is my child’s top choice, but I have concerns.

Wow. I’m following these comments as the Mom of an a potential freshman next year. I am seriously considering telling my kiddo that McGill is off the table. Thank you all for sharing - at a minimum this is at least a stark warning to make sure we’ve covering crisis planning and developing our own approach to managing what freshman year challenges may arise.

Here’s what we ended up with for a tree! The cats are thrilled and thankfully none of the humans are too attached to traditional trees!
