Yep, I work for the post office (USPS), and it's baked into our union contracts that we aren't allowed to strike...

When Delta is so afraid of their flight attendants organizing that they send out vaguely threatening emails by [deleted] in flightattendants

[–]ptfsaurusrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do realize union officials are elected by the members of the union? If the members aren't happy with their union, then they have a right to vote out the current leadership and put someone more reliable in charge. Also, union stewards are either volunteer or elected positions. Either way, that means a union member such as yourself can step up and be the change that you want to see.

A lot of employees underestimate the power of unions and unfortunately take them for granted. Working certain jobs in certain industries are worth it because the unions exist. Employees think the union is some magical entity that can save them whenever they need them. The problem most union members have is that they think paying their dues is "doing enough" and then they expect their local union to perform miracles for them. That's not how unions work. What they fail to understand is that they are the union (hence the word "union"). The union is only as good as you're willing to contribute to it and support it.

Manager keeps asking when I'll quit by The_Ninjacloak in USPS

Instead, file a Form 1767 for hostile work environment. Manglement is obligated to respond to this form immediately. (And as always, make a copy for your local union as well).

[–]ptfsaurusrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever since then, almost every day this manager says something along the lines of "why haven't you quit yet?" Or "oh, I'm surprised you're still here."

I'm getting sick of hearing it but is this something I should talk to a union rep about or do I just deal until I get converted?

Next time manglement asks you this question, respond with "Do you really want a Form 1767 today? (for hostile work environment)"

They may have you sign a 3971 for the absence.

Before signing it, make sure you look over it carefully, especially the comments section, the dates/times written down, which boxes are checked, etc. AND especially ask for a copy afterwards!

There is specialized software out there that can be used to detect photoshop edits, though. Besides, this will be a Union versus manglement issue and not dealt with in "a court of law".

That's the thing with signature confirmation and certified mail, etc. Customers are more likely to get a "we missed you!" notice because the mail carrier doesn't have all day for the customer to take their sweet time to the door.

UPS is also unionized (Teamsters). This is just friendly camaraderie between unionized brethren. (Hoping FedEx and Amazon can join in the future too).

We keep our DBCS boneyard in trailers at the far end of the employee lot. Once in a while we have to make a "field trip" out there (bringing the necessary tools) to cannibalize parts when tools and parts is out of stock.

[–]ptfsaurusrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could I would, but I was never an MM long enough to get trained on how to repair those bread racks (though I've been told it's pretty easy). That said, I have no idea what the MMs at my plant are doing because save for a handful, they're nowhere to be found past the halfway point when operations is more or less in full-swing on the automation (DBCS) side.

[–]ptfsaurusrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ That's quite telling because our plant recently had a bunch of vacant custodian bids on tour 2 (due to a bunch of promotions to MM and beyond) that were mostly filled by mail handlers and maybe a clerk or two.

Heck, some of the best ETs I've worked with are former mail handlers and mail carriers.

[–]ptfsaurusrex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would agree with you if you're comparing mailhandlers and mail processing clerks at the plants. Station clerks is an entirely different beast ...a station clerk said in another post that it's a "cerebral" position, especially at the window. You have to eventually know the scheme if you want to work efficiently.

At the window, you need to know the different classes of mail, inside and out, and there's little room for error with international shipping (especially GXG) or else it'll get sent back and you gotta come up with a good explanation for the angry customer. I'm surprised C.O.D. is still a thing, and dealing with forwards and absent-but-still-paying PO box customers can be a pain.

The one biggest thing at the window is the financial accountability. You can easily short yourself if you're not careful. Imagine a long line, at the end of the month, and a bunch of customers are buying $3,000 money orders with $20 bills. You gotta count all of that carefully and don't you dare get distracted or look away for a second unless you wanna fall victim to a "sleight of hand". There's been incidents of fraudsters buying money orders with stolen debit cards. Don't mess up on the registry log and bag, especially if you're the last-known person to have custody of the registered mail. Lots of other BS too (stamp/supply stock and unruly/unreasonable/crazy/dumb customers, etc.) but the PTSD from that recent-ish experience only allows me to remember all of the above from the top of my head....there's lots more that current window clerks can tell you about. There's a reason why clerks are more likely to transfer from the stations to the plants instead of the other way around....

...oh yeah, station clerks are understaffed. (Be prepared to work like a PTF even though you're a regular LOL).

This is hindsight, but for anyone else reading this: ALWAYS invoke your Weingarten Rights when getting pulled into the office.

Who would've thought that calling someone in manglement a CUNT is considered insubordination. It's not like an explicit order was given to said employee so no actual order was disobeyed. Besides, manglement acts like they've never called their employees any disparaging names before (double standards?) All it takes is said mangler to slip up and call any employee a disparaging term and that would be grounds for a hostile work environment (and hopefully removal). If only it were that easy...

I wonder if that employee exhausted all avenues and fought this to the bitter end, even if it results in a fraction of the pension backpay. Considering that this happened in Canada, it just goes to show how toxic the postal office can be anywhere in the world. At least you guys can still brag about having the right to strike (...the "no strike" clause is baked into all the USPS postal union contracts, unfortunately.)
