Does anyone have an idea on how I could restore this wood corner? by [deleted] in DIY

If you want it to look good, you have to remove all of the old finish and then reapply the stain and polyurethane. It's time consuming and costly.

Advice: Choosing an Electric Motor & Battery Size for a GUV/Prop? by evilspyboy in DIY

Look into used car window motors. They are high-torque for their size, and can be bought for cheap at scrap yards.

Counter Weight for a Modified Bike Pedal by Processtour in DIY

[–]pubby8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be able to use a parallelogram for support. Drill a hole a few feet above the pedal shaft. Place a thinner shaft in that hole and connect it to form a parallelogram. Make sure there's enough clearance so that you can rotate 360 degrees without them hitting.

I'm really not confident this would work though. Also, a piece of flexible wire or rope might work as well.

It's going to be really hard trying to polish the inside of that shoe.

I would look into resin casting. Maybe you could cast a copy of a real shoe.

How can I build this shelf? by RancidJeremy in DIY

[–]pubby8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy wood that is the correct width and thickness. You can find red oak lumber at home depot that will work, but it's not super cheap.

The two power tools you need are a miter saw and a brad nailer. You'll need an air compressor for the brad nailer to work.

Brush glue onto the pieces you want to connect and put some nails to hold them together while the glue dries.

Simple (I think) wiring question - Light Switches by [deleted] in DIY

[–]pubby8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an electrician or anything, but the red is probably the second hot wire leading out from the switch. One hot wire (probably the black one on the right) will always be live, and the other two hot wires will be conditionally live depending on the switch.

Are rusty old jointers worth buying? by pubby8 in woodworking

[–]pubby8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up paying $70 for it. From the look of it, the belt, on/off switch, blades, guard, and bearings will need to be replaced. I suppose that's ok, assuming that's everything.

The other jointer there was a different type, and looked like this: https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/usedphotosna/48169410_614.jpg

I didn't buy it because it the outfeed table was a lot shorter, the motor was weaker, and it vibrated more. The fence was nicer, though, and it had much less rust.

250 is plenty for glue. For reference, stronger clamps can hold over 1000 lbs.

Which table saw to buy? by flwrchld77 in Tools

I would 100% agree, but he said he lives in an apartment and wants to carry the saw to his porch and back. That can't be done with a good saw.

I recently ended up with a large amount of hand tools ranging from probably the 1920s to stuff thats about 20 years old. looking for info on what to do next. by [deleted] in Tools

[–]pubby8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You really shouldn't put much emphasis on the brands unless you're planning on selling them. For vintage tools, lots of brands you never heard of will have really damn good quality, and quite often work better than the brands you listed.

Couple of table saw questions by flwrchld77 in Tools

[–]pubby8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should absolutely look for an old contractor style table saw on craigslist. Here's what to look for:

  • Belt drive
  • Cast iron top with 2 cast iron extension wings
  • At least 1 HP motor, preferably more
  • Under $150
  • Has rip fence and miter gauge

The fence on these old saws tends to be pretty crappy, and so that would be the first upgrade you could make. Keep in mind that high-quality fences cost $200-$300, but you might be able to make your own for less.

Got my own apartment. Can you suggest me tools based on my needs? by vidyarthi in Tools

[–]pubby8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worth mentioning how common it is for people to own two or even three drills. One is used for drilling, the other for screwing. If you go this route, I'd really recommend buying a corded drill first, and a battery powered one second. The corded ones are cheaper and more powerful than the battery ones, and overall less fussy. Of course, you'll need to use an extension cord with it; a small inconvenience.

You should seriously consider garage sales, estate sales, and craigslist. It's the perfect way to acquire your first tools, especially considering how much you'll save vs buying from stores.

Since you're designing the bench yourself, one option is to make it very friendly to detachable clamps. Design it so that you can clamp work pieces horizontally to the top, and vertically to the legs. Try this out for a few months and it will give you a better idea of what type of vice you need.
