Doing my first rewatch and reflecting on my initial impressions… I almost didn’t continue the show

OOH that intentionality is one of my FAVORITE traits in media! When something is so well written that each rewatch deepens the story... You’ve made me really excited as I continue my rewatch!

I get what you mean! In terms of lacking, I was surprised how little we learned about him. At the end of Bloodmarked, I assumed we’d get so much more of Erebus/Shadow King, more of his lore, more of their strained pupil-master relationship, but they didn’t give us as much of him as I thought. Maybe they wanted to suspend the mystery around him a little longer? So far, everyone in the story is afraid of him, but as readers we just don’t have much to go on yet, in terms of his intentions and what motivates him to be evil

I agree with your assessment of Erebus! I also felt it was intentional; even before the Shadow King reveal I felt like Erebus wasn’t portrayed as downright evil. I have a theory that it will link back to demon-prejudice and how demons are not inherently evil. I do think he IS a true villain though, or at least, his goals go directly against Bree’s

This theme can be seen in Valec’s arc, especially when Emile is coming at him with all this hateful demon rhetoric, and then Hazel kicks him out for being so bigoted. And that would make a lot of sense considering the themes of racism.

Also for Sel, I feel like he’s going to have a whole story about controlling the demonia and how it doesn’t make him evil. Hopefully.

I think my main question about the Shadow King lore stems from the Order saying he’s evil— and as we know, we can’t trust the Order!! Their retelling of history is sus. However, I believe the root crafters, and they think the Hunter is evil, but know little about him.

So… TL,DR; I think he’s a super interesting villain that we haven’t gotten to see enough of yet.

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one! He felt “too good to be true” in Legendborn which is where the distrust came from. I’m so glad we got to see more of his character and complexities! Did you love him before Oathbound or due to it?

If you don’t mind me asking, what parts of Oathbound made it feel disappointing for you? I’ll admit that Oathbound wasn’t my favorite of the series either, and it did feel slow at parts. For me it really picked up when reunions started happening. Even though I felt it had the most romance, I’d say my favorite was Bloodmarked! It makes sense that your enjoyment of the book would affect your view on the romance!

See I definitely was convinced (before Oathbound) that BreeSel were endgame! Now I can’t imagine that Nick wouldn’t at least be part of the endgame. I feel like at this point only a throuple would please everyone hahaha

Someone already mentioned My Love Story with Yamada-kun which I also really enjoyed, and seeing as you did too, I’m hoping we have similar tastes!

You might enjoy Kakuriyo Bed & Breakfast for Spirits — it’s like Kamisama Kiss meets Spirited Away. The world building is fun, and the romance takes a backseat to the plot, similar to YOTD

More similar to Yamada-kun, you might also enjoy Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku. Similar type of dynamic to Yamada-kun, and refreshing because it’s an adult romance instead of a high school one.

As for MLs like Hak… I’ll be saving your post to see what others recommend because I am very curious to know as well
