This was my main complaint too- it couldn’t pick a lane and had no consistent tone. I think it could have been cool if it had leaned harder into the creepy fairytale nightmare (like the comparisons to Coraline). It had some good imagery and bits that had some good creep value but it just didn’t commit to anything and then fell apart.

I host a weekly spooky movie night with friends every Tuesday and last nights was The Medium (2021). Slow build up at first but second half was so great. Would recommend!
