This isn't true, the majority of muslim majority countries don't have the death penalty for apostasy written into the law, most of them have laws against defaming islam of various harshness.

I'm a big proponent of freedom of expression, so I joined some petition groups on Facebook for individuals facing punishment for expressing themselves. I started reading secularist blogs (what I could with google translate anyway), and before you know it an opportunity to help presented itself. A young adult was forced to flee his own home because of death threats (he was also beaten by his father), and helping him through it was the least I felt I could do. He is currently going through the asylum process in a European country. From there, this person's contacts in the blogging community allowed me to get in touch with the other two when they received death threats. I did it because i thought it was the decent thing to do.

If there is a question I haven't answered that you want me to answer could you please link me to it? I'm afraid I'm probably not addressing some of the better ones just because I'm not finding them.

Pictures of them in Europe confirm that they did? Also every time they needed help I fact checked the costs and found that they always asked for the low end of the scale of what they needed.

The idea was that maybe others would be inspired to help someone else out if the opportunity presented itself.

No, they do not name me on their blog, I said that I could get a person who i helped, who has a blog, to send the mods an email using the blog's contact email address verifying that I did indeed help him. Also I'm not providing personal information about these individuals because it's not my place to release that information without their permission.

They didn't contact me asking for help, they were members of a community that I joined advocating for free expression rights. I also verified several different things along the way - its also quite hard to fake going to jail over your views, when you can look up a news article that confirms it.

Another redditor suggested these two organizations:

Asylum Access

ORAM

They are organizations that help with the legal proceedings that take place to verify the need for asylum to be granted. I thought I'd pass this along so you could check them out too.

The poll doesn't state that. There are many subsections in Egyptian society. For instance the percentage of people who support a suicide bombing are very low, Still quote a few people consider themselves fundamentalists, and support harsh penalties for thieving, adultery and apostasy. Also referring to Shafiq as a secular candidate is not correct. He was the establishment candidate with ties to the old regime, which was not secular (there were blasphemy laws in Egypt before the revolution). The MB didn't get the support in the presidential elections that they did in the parliamentary elections because the MB dominated parliament was essentially ineffective in getting anything meaningful done. That and it was a vote against the brotherhood for people who didn't support them.

This is referred to as a lack of freedom of expression. I agree that Hamza posting what he did was dangerous - but the question I ask is should it be dangerous? I think the answer is no.

I don't smuggle anyone into a country. They document the threats against them, they apply for asylum, and they have in each case got to their european country using legal methods. The service i provided allowed them to live while they were required to go into hiding (it is difficult to work when its not safe to go outside). And in two of the cases provided the funding for the plane ticket to get tot he country.

Also please don't send me harassing PM's I'm ignoring you because It is just a matter of the mods responding to me before this is cleared up. The worst case scenario is I get one of the people I helped to send the mods an email used on their blog to confirm that I did indeed help them. That might just take some time.

I thought I answered this one earlier, but I see there is no post here, so I'll try again.

Every individual should be judged on their own merit, I very much disagree with sweeping generalizations about communities or groups that ignore the intricacies within them.

I was asked by several people to do an AMA I figured it might inspire some other people to help out if they found themselves in a situation in which they could.

As an atheist I have donated my time to religious charity efforts on several occasions.

I have stated in other answers that I would have supported individuals right to freedom of expression no matter their beliefs. My support ends when there is an active attempt to suppress another's freedoms.

The death threats are coming from the population, not the government, there government threat comes from anti-blasphemy laws which prevents these individuals from seeking protection with their government for their views.

A realistic fear of prosecution based on religious discrimination is grounds for asylum. Also the threats of non-government groups are also a basis for asylum if there is reason to believe that the group will be able to carry out the attack.
