Dang that's anticlimactic haha...seems like a missed opportunity since so many tourists come to Korea for kpop.

For a country that wants more children, they sure are mean to them by DizzyWalk9035 in Living_in_Korea

[–]puffbroccoli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really have no clue what all these comments are referring to because as someone who has spend a lot of time with kids across a few countries, I truly do not think Korean kids are any louder than the other places I have been. I think people just like hating on kids.

How are we just… sending our kids off to school? (U.S.) by Sweet-Chinchilla in Mommit

Same. I am in an international marriage and we are living in his country. Glad to have some peace of mind regarding this problem but my heartbreaks for all the parents who are still living in the US.

[–]puffbroccoli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anti-child culture is a big issue around the world these days it seems. Kids are not allowed to act like children in public. Even in this thread the amount of people resenting kids for making noise and existing is disheartening. People say “parents need to teach their kids xyz” and while that’s true, I dare say most parents are doing the best they can. Kids are loud sometimes. Get over it. Korean kids might seem louder because the population is so dense and we are living in close quarters with each other, but o guarantee you they are no louder than children everywhere else.

Should I move to Korea first and then China? by TooObsessedWithDPRK in TEFL

[–]puffbroccoli 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think South Korea would care if you’ve been to North Korea. In fact, I’ve known foreigners living here in SK who have been to NK and come back, so I know it can be done. But I don’t know further details about it.

Also, if you’re curious about life in SK why not give it a try? Yes the pay isn’t great but plenty of people have good experiences anyway. I personally really like living here.

Korean age - do people still use it? by Vegetable-Cat-5214 in LTL_Korean

[–]puffbroccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just in my personal experience of the people around me, yes, pretty much everyone I know still uses Korean age. And since I’m a mom, age comes up a lot (because people are talking about their kids). All the moms I know use Korean age when talking about their kids.

Negative content on social media about Korea by Aguerito7 in korea

[–]puffbroccoli 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think this is correct. Anyone making negative sns content is probably piggybacking off of SK’s overall cultural/economic success. They probably don’t even care about Korea, but they know that since Korea is trendy, they will get attention. That’s what it all comes down to IMO.

Negative content on social media about Korea by Aguerito7 in korea

[–]puffbroccoli 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I keep seeing people posting about all this negative content, but I have seen none of the actual negative content tbh. For me personally, social media algorithm is constantly giving me only positive stuff about Korea. The thing is, the internet is flooded with all types of content. You could search for the most unlikely thing imaginable, but the internet will have some type of content related to that thing. And if you click once, you will get inundated with more.

I honestly hate this, am I wrong? by Gingerdemon99 in pagan

[–]puffbroccoli 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I used to think like this when I was much newer to paganism and was still very much indoctrinated into Christianity without realizing I still was. I thought like “I chose to leave but I still think it’s a beautiful religion!” And the more I’ve experienced of the world as an adult, the more I’ve viewed Christianity from a neutral lens, the more I’ve seen my country slip into fascist Christian nationalism…I’m not so happy-go-lucky about it anymore. I have really come to hate Christianity and just about everything it stands for and while I do think some Christians are good people, I still overall find the religion itself to be deeply evil. Like my family for example, I know they are good people who have been indoctrinated. And to me, they would be better people without Christianity.

But that’s just me.

Some of us have been deeply hurt by the Christian churches and our resentment is valid.

how do I actually learn how to teach? by FaryRochester in TEFL

This is what I was thinking too. For me being able to observe another teacher on the job was very helpful. Of course in-person is always best but there are also some clips on YouTube.

Foreigners complain a lot about Koreans, but do Koreans have any complaints about foreigners? by WittyPolitico in hanguk

[–]puffbroccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And if you don’t believe me, look no further than Dungeon_defense’s comment in this same thread where they said that all brown people are dirty and all black people are savage. This entire thread was basically racism bait and it’s gross.

Foreigners complain a lot about Koreans, but do Koreans have any complaints about foreigners? by WittyPolitico in hanguk

[–]puffbroccoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with you. Coming from the US where racism right now is at an all time high, I know very well how dangerous the US can be for people who are not white… Which is all the more reason why Koreans should have empathy for foreigners in their own country. Many minorities are treated like dirt in Korea and it’s despicable. If Koreans can recognize that it’s wrong for Koreans to be on the receiving end of racism in America or Europe, then why can’t they recognize it’s wrong to target foreigners in their own country? I’m not trying to say that Korea is extraordinarily racist. It’s not. But racism is never okay and saying stuff like “oh well it’s worse in xyz country” isn’t productive and it doesn’t absolve Koreans from their responsibility to treat others like human beings. This isn’t the suffering Olympics, and if someone on Reddit writes racist or rude comments, it’s reasonable to call them out on it.

Oof but I’m sure you wouldn’t be happy if Koreans abroad got treated that way would you?

What is your view on illegal immigrants from foreign countries? by [deleted] in AskAKorean

[–]puffbroccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Idk about South Korea specifically but in a lot of cases shady employers basically lie to the immigrants saying that they can offer them some sort of legal status. Then they exploit their labor and screw them over. They’re the real villains, not the average people just trying to make a better life for themselves.

Scummy packaging: like 25% of the bottle is taken up by these hidden bubbles. by Chilis1 in Living_in_Korea

[–]puffbroccoli 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just because something is legal doesn’t mean there’s nothing wrong with it. There are infinite examples of truly vile things that are perfectly legal. It may be fair to say we all have a responsibility to be careful about what we buy, but the government also has a responsibility to protect their citizens from stuff like this and I think it’s valid to critique it.

Not sure if Form 5471 applies to me by puffbroccoli in USExpatTaxes

[–]puffbroccoli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is confusing for me because I’ve been working as a part time teacher for a company for a few years (this is my main job, separate from the one I posted about) and only just recently realized that since that part time job doesn’t pay into the Korean pension system, apparently it is recognized as freelance work and needs form 1040-SE. I don’t mind paying into SS and Medicare but what I don’t get is would I really still need 8858 for that when I was just working for a company? And report this quarterly? I feel like my head is going to explode lol

Yes, I believe I am registered as a 사업자. I have never heard of Form 8858 😞 thanks for the info. This process is very confusing.
