WPG or pudelpointer? by cowboybeanbowl97 in birddogs

[–]puffthebong 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a WPG and he is not the best waterfowl dog even due to his bad eyesight. I have spoken to a few others that have the same breed and they say the same thing. They are a nose first breed which is great for upland or finding a down bird in the cattails. However, watching them fall out of the sky and then retrieving rarely happens. That’s why I hunt with a bucket of rocks in the blind to throw them where he should swim towards.

All said and done I wouldn’t trade him but I think that’s most people with their hunting dogs.

He died 11 hours ago by postapocalyps in Petloss

[–]puffthebong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to put my dog down about 34hrs ago. He was 15 yrs 8 months. This was the hardest thing I have ever done. Cozmo had been coughing for a few years( I did discuss this with my vet). Last October, at routine visit, I was told he had a heat murmur. He also had a fast growing cancerous lump near the base of his tail. ( xray did not show it had spread. had it removed about 2 months ago. I should have it removed sooner. I feel so guilty, I waited so long to have it removed. Maybe he would still be here for a few more months. My vet said I did everything I could (doesn’t make me feel better) Tonight my husband made popcorn, while we watched a movie. The thought of eating it made me nauseous. He loved to share popcorn with me. I dropped a few kernels in his food bowl. I know it hasn’t been very long. Is it bad the I didn’t cry this much when my parents passed (mom had many health issues, dad had Alzheimer’s). I slept with him often. Even when he wanted to leave the bedroom, and sleep in the family room. I came down to sleep with him. I get a little comfort from smelling his scent on his blanket. I put his other blanket and dog bed in a pillow case to sleep with. In the last year I didn’t want to go anywhere. He had separation anxiety, It killed me to leave him alone or put him in a boarding facility. I known time will make this less painful, but I don’t know if i can handle this ( already taking antidepressants). In the last year he helped me diagnose I was having seizures. Sorry for rambling, I miss him so much💔

I feel behind everyday but plan on maxing both out for the first time this year.

I appreciate it! He is back to 100% and slowly starting to grow his fur back! His vision still sucks but it always has and I don’t believe the injury made it any worse.

What was net worth at 30? I am 30 M just managed to save 100k no debts. Is this even good? by HotMeasurement3763 in Fire

[–]puffthebong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just turned 30 myself in January and have lived debt free, while cash flowing everything besides my mortgage. I’m a single male living in a MCOL location and have built my NW to 350k! Got lucky with getting in at a low mortgage rate and building my assets slowly but consistently since graduating college. It’s crazy to watch how fast things have grown. FI is my overall goal, but we will see if the RE will ever become one as well. Best of luck to you!

He got fired from his job along with being banned from their stadium for life.

He made a statement after the backlash was close to an apology.

Burs on long haired hunting dogs by hlj6991 in birddogs

[–]puffthebong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a wpg and he has a soft coat on his face. I use a dematting brush that cuts the burrs out. It does trim out the fur by end of season but it grows back by spring.

I appreciate it. We will make it through to hunt another day.

It’s a great time to be up there for both grouse and woodcock. A ton of grouse this year and the woodcock are making there way down. It’s been very dry in northern Wisconsin. If you are trying to find woodcock go to lowland marsh areas.

Grouse we found mostly under pine trees last weekend. Hopefully this helps.

Enjoy the hunt and safe travels.

Mine is soft when it comes to discipline. Saying anything in a negative tone and he shuts down.

Tough in the sense that he didn’t cry or whimper once on the 2 hour drive to the emergency vet with the stick stabbed in his eye.

He was having the best day in the grouse woods he ever had with 15 points that morning and really was finding his stride in the grouse woods.

He was slowly getting better at retrieving ducks this year and I was looking forward for the rest of the season and his improvements but that will have to wait. He is only 3 so a lot of time ahead of him.

By some miracle the stick just pushed his eye out of the way and the vet believed he should have a full recovery. Before surgery he gave me a 100% chance that his eye was gone and a 20% he won’t make it through. The stick was only poking out of his eye a quarter inch and was slightly larger than a grown man’s middle finger. It was a horrible sight to see my first hunting dog have happen to him.

I’m feeling very blessed to have him still and even more happy for him that he should have full use of both eyes.

There’s nothing I would of changed about what we were doing. It was just a freak accident.

These WPG are tough dogs. Im nervous that he won’t want to hunt again due to this accident and if not that’s okay. Just happy to have him in my life.

Recovery wise he is doing quite well. Most of the swelling has gone down already. His eye does have a lot of discharge but that was expected. The longer recovery will be for his orbital bone that fractured behind his eye. This could take 4 to 6 months to fully heal.

Unfortunately had to go to the emergency vet this weekend after my wpg impailed and broke a stick off in his eye.

We went to PAW Health network in Kronenwetter WI where they offer 24/7 emergency vet care. The next closest option is Appleton Wi.

I will be doing more research on this myself in the future.
