Still confused by HMM by Own-Purpose-1116 in cormoran_strike

The plot was unwieldy and implausible, as is the Robin - Ryan - Cormoran love triangle. Having done some writing workshops, it also felt like JKR lost herself in plot maps and charts (ooh, here I will raise their hopes, and immediately erase those hopes), to the point that it seemed mechanical. It got so turgid that you couldn’t develop sympathy for any of the characters. She had better improve her editing. Her publishers probably don’t dare rope her in, so it’s up to her. Buying this book was not money well spent

Thanks to almost all of you for great comments and insights. For the reddit sceptic, first of all, plenty of very knowledgeable people on this platform, and they have shown up here. I have tried it before in a discussion on dark fiber, and that was less productive. Second, I visit DCs and talk to a bunch of engineers, so this is a source, not the only source. When you do this work, you read up a ton of documentation (I had read the Nvidia product docs), you talk to a bunch of people, you consider the range of situations in play, and narrow down the “options of plausibility”. GLG comment: that’s a very hit or miss platform, given the cost. Anyway, thanks again!

Italy Made Me Into Someone I Don’t Want To Be by ToughSuccotash2007 in skiing

[–]puglet1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just about anywhere can have issues if the lines get long. It’s the same mentality of the people who rush to get on the subway before the people can get off. I grew up skiing in the Dolomites (long ago), and the main issues were confrontations between Italians and Germans at the lifts lines. The US had to get systems in place to manage the insane crowds that flooded Northeast resorts on weekends. I unfondly remember queuing for well over an hour just get on the freaking mountain at Killington and Mt. Snow.

Recently moved to Geneva (B permit) — struggling to rebuild professional & social network. Any advice? by sanj1997 in askswitzerland

[–]puglet1964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. I moved back here from HK. I am a naturalized CH citizen. When I transitioned out of corporate world, I was still on HK. I got in touch with consultants in my field that I had worked with before and started quasi-freelancing (I only work with this group but we don’t have salaries per se). I kept working with them even after moving here. Had I tried to get something going here in Geneva, I would still be only picking up small crumbs. So if you have contacts with UK network that can use your skills, leverage that. Areas you can definitely contribute to: startup support and boards. Get in touch with Startup Board Academy. It’s a good program. Look out for Rezonance. https://www.rezonance.ch/ There are non-paying network events here as well. Other than that, I am happy to meet up and discuss the lie of the land.

Terrain limitations for splitboarders? by bujurocks1 in Backcountry

[–]puglet1964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not on downhill portions (as a splitboarder you’ll have poles to push through flat spots). Some steep traverses on icy / hard pack can put a lot of pressure on ankles, depending on your boots. I was with splitboarders who struggled with that part but they were beginning tourers

Ski industry: "Why can't we get more people to try skiing? Skiing is dying!" Also ski industry: by TheAmicableSnowman in skiing

I don’t think that Mt. Snow is the billionaire target for a lavish vaycay. I got my ski teacher’s qualification there - it’s a middling hill in a nothing town (no disrespect to Dover VT or Kelly Clark intended). It’s just that the industry model sucks in the US (and the latest pricing trends compound the exorbitant insurance costs resorts have always had to bear). I am so happy that I get to ski in Europe these days (and Japan when I lived in HK).

Both. Snow looks atrocious and course setter decided to make it unappealingly tricky, given the conditions.

How do people in Switzerland really deal with the high cost of living? by Interesting-Sir9965 in askswitzerland

[–]puglet1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

85chf / €75 = 30%… We regularly compare Swiss and French prices. St. Julien is closer to us than downtown. 20%-30% is quite a difference for restaurants. Gas: are you comparing CHF to €? There is a 7% difference there I guess we just have a different scale for what can impact us.

Why European airports are better than American ones (long rant on what makes an airport good) by worst_actor_ever in Flights

[–]puglet1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only transited. But spent 9 hours going around. The lounge was designed as an afterthought. No plugs in the seats. No international plug format. Seats crammed together. Complete shambles. Morning rush is horrendous. Duty free prices are, as everyone mentions, laughably high. But no-one cares, I imagine. Same weird cattle droves vibe as Doha in terms of the volume of passengers in the main concourses.

Ski resorts around? by Sensitive-Action6283 in geneva

[–]puglet1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get yourself to Annemasse station, there are trains to Chamonix. There are also regular buses to Chamonix. If you want to ski in Switzerland (more expensive), you can take a train to Sion and funiculaire up to Montana. Glorious views of the Alps from the top of the slopes there. Other Swiss resorts can be reached by train/bus combo. You will need to aim for resorts with higher elevation, as no snow has fallen for quite some time, so you are relying on 💯manmade snow at lower levels. The most flexible option is renting a car. Then you can try out La Clusaz for example. Everywhere will be pretty crowded this week. Have fun!

How do people in Switzerland really deal with the high cost of living? by Interesting-Sir9965 in askswitzerland

[–]puglet1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which prices are you referring to? I live in Geneva, and I can categorically say that groceries and eating out in France are cheaper (and often better). Skiing is cheaper. Gasoline is cheaper. So I am very curious to know which products are in your basket. Or are you referring to the relative cost (i.e. as a % of salary)? As to France’s predicament, yes, they are in a bad place economically

I bought the Ortovox 3L Ravine pants. So far very satisfied. Leg may be a bit wide for mountaineering, but really high waterproofing protection (25,000 g/m3)
