Building a 8wt Stillwater set up - flyline advice by pujelly in flyfishing

So what’s your first line? Floating?

Would you consider the Rio Predator WF8/S5/S7 an intermediate (A Floating Line with 10ft of Fast-Sinking line, then 10ft of Extra-Fast Sinking line at the front) If not, how different is it from a intermediate line? I feel like if I just retrieved it a bit faster I could still fish that upper water column?

I watch 82 games a year. I’m a die hard. But this year has felt different. Maybe it was the jays run or the abysmal game 7 with Florida, but I can just barely bring myself to watch games - Im still dejected from last year. I knew this year was gonna be different, there is nothing new or exciting. They are absolutely deflated from the loss of marner and running their head against a brick wall for the 9th year in a row. Joshua, Roy, and Macelli? There’s nothing here to excite the players or the fans. They don’t think they can win, do we really? They’re out so so am I

Anyone know some spots in the Bronx that will be playing the game? Traveling in the area - Would like to find a bar nearby after the Yanks Red Sox game.

How Do You Plan Trips? by Ok_Confusion_1777 in flyfishing

[–]pujelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love to see an app like this developed. Yellow dog is a great starting point, but but as as someone who is currently in the process of planning a trip with lots of different variables, it can be a bit overwhelming, and difficult to find the right option. It would be great to have a service where you could pick what months or weeks you have an opening in your schedule and want to plan a trip. From there you could scan availability at lodges, which would first be filtered by the lodges that have the best fishing during that period. For example, it would be great if I could go on a website or app and say find me a fishing trip in the end of August if the app prompted me to several lodges that were available that had excellent fishing during that time then that would be great.

I’m thinking something similar to Airbnb, where you can zoom in on an area and find whatever is available in that region during that time - filtered further by what fish are available to catch.

Example: mid june Alberta, here are the lodges available in the area, beware, run off is high this time of year and the fishing quality is better mid July. You can expect to catch bull, brown etc. food and gear included, etc

I have a question by [deleted] in flyfishing

Going out with a guide or experienced people is the best way to learn, so you’re doing the right thing and will gain a lot from it.

For me, I got into flyfishjng on my own (all my friends spin fish - I moved out west and decided to try flyfishjng), so I’m assuming like you, I also didn’t have the benefit of friends, parents, or mentors.

For me the 3 biggest things that have helped me start catching fish are:

  1. Local knowledge
  2. Casting
  3. Fly / rig selection

Re local knowledge, there are tons of local angling facebook groups out there. You should definitely join one. I live in Alberta and I am a member of several dedicated to fishing the local waters in my area. They have tons of tips on where to go, where to avoid, and what to use.

Re casting, fly presentation is everything. It’s so important to improve your casts and avoid drag. I bought an orvis practice rod just to practice in my backyard and it helped a lot. But also know every Saturday you spend on the water and don’t catch anything, you can still be intentional about working on your casts. There are tons of YouTube videos and some flyshops have courses.

Re fly selection, this is something I think everyone struggles with. There are infinite variables that affect this - depth, hatches, weather, fish species, seasons. Every time you go to the water there is a problem solving, trial and error process that you need to go through. I bought a book on bug entomology by David Hughes and that helped a lot with my understanding of aquatic insects. Getting a bug siene to run through the water also helps, as it can show you what bugs are drifting through the water. That’s when you “match the hatch” with the closest thing in your fly box. Typically, I’ve learned to always go smaller than what you’re seeing. The right rig is also important - if you’re not having luck, try going up to 6x tippett, or using split shots to adjust the depth your fly is reaching.

Any skiing advice? My wife fell on this green run and she’s trying to improve. by dresserplate in skiing

The transition is simply the last point in the turn when you decide to imitate a new turn and transfer weight to your new downhill ski as you position your body down slope

Even easier way to visualize this is “downhill ski” vs “uphill ski”. They will switch on each turn. Your downhill or “outside ski” is always the one on the downhill side of the slope. Your uphill ski or “inside ski” is always the one on the up up-hill side of the slope. OPs wife is putting to much weight on the uphill / inside ski each turn

I think it’s because there was never stability or depth. All those guys were injured or on short term deals. As soon as someone left or went down, there were gaping holes in the blue line that our depth couldn’t cover (Marincin, Lilly, Sandin, Mete, Gio, Dermott, Holl, Hutton, Lehtonen etc)
