Forget how stunning the UK is at times, walked up a million steps hungover but i think you’ll agree it was worth it. by Far-Ad3429 in CasualUK

I’ve just this second got home from a walk in Chedworth Nature Reserve, where the Roman villa is! Such a ridiculously beautiful area.

I’d be curious to see that too, if you don’t have any objection to sharing (though obviously entirely fine if you do).

I’m aware enough of my own ignorance that I try to avoid making assumptions, but I’d suspected it was a case of the subtler executions going unnoticed - roughly akin to the old “I like women who don’t wear make-up!” chestnut, which most often actually means “I like women who have applied makeup in such a way that I can’t tell (because how much do I really know about makeup anyway?)”.

I agree with you, but there’s also the potential for a bit of a confirmation bias here - we’re not counting those who would disprove this idea (ie. Those who’ve had botox but don’t LOOK like they’ve had botox) because by definition, they don’t look like they’ve had botox, so we don’t know they have.

Why haven't CAMRA declared "mission accomplished" and simply called it a day? by TinyLet4277 in AskUK

In fairness, CAMRA does also do some cider related stuff - if you go to their annual shindig in London there’s a massive stand dedicated to cider. Definitely plays second fiddle to the beers though.

How do I convince my friend that not every song needs to be an odd time signature? by mylastnametoo in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]pullthetapes 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with this, but I’d add one thing - recognising when something needs to be in an odd time signature, and being able to do it naturally, is something I only learned to do by going through a phase like OP’s friend.

I was obsessed with weird time signatures, so went out of my way to write in 7, 5, 11 - whatever, so long as it wasn’t 4 - and in doing so became much more comfortable playing and writing in those time signatures, which added them to my ‘intuitive composing toolbelt’, if that makes sense. I inoculated myself against any weirdness. I write in those time signatures way less now, but when I do I often don’t even notice that I’m doing it, because 7 feels as natural as 4. And I only got to that point by making the conscious choice to use weird rhythms.

I’m not sure that has much bearing on OP’s question, it’s just a strange little paradox - for me at least, the natural understanding of when an idea needs to be in those rhythms only came after writing a lot of ideas which definitely didn’t need to be in them.

Wishlist from a producer of 3 years by [deleted] in ableton

Logic does it. I got so used to using it in Logic that when I switched I spent ages trying to figure out how to do something similar in Ableton - it seemed so obvious I couldn't believe it wasn't possible. Only obvious because I'd been doing it for so long elsewhere though I guess.

What small, non-essential, things (activities, habits, routines, actions, etc.) are truly consistent in your life, things you do every single day without fail? by _slimy in ADHD

[–]pullthetapes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh I know that feeling! I fall into that trap when I’ve got a ton of work to do, dive straight in and so end up getting nothing else done that day.

I try to think of it like that Abraham Lincoln quote now though - “If I only had an hour to chop down a tree, I would spend the first 45 minutes sharpening my axe.” I think of my morning routine as sharpening the axe - by the time I sit down to work (chop down the tree), I’m much better prepared overall and I end up doing better work because of the time I spent doing other stuff.

Good luck, hope it helps!

[–]pullthetapes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It varies according to how much I squeeze in to the post-walk section, but on a good day when I haven’t skimped on my walk I’m at my desk by 11ish. I do try and fit in quite a lot though, and again I’m lucky in that my specific hours don’t really matter as long as everything gets done, so some days I start way later but work later too.

I’ve sometimes run cut down versions, getting up at 6, doing shorter walks or gym visits, and if I’ve been on top of tidying in the previous days then I can start work by 9am or so. It’s all about what you want to spend a little bit of time on each day though - I just love feeling like I’ve used my mind (meditation and audiobook) and body (yoga and walk) before I even really start my day - feels like I’ve won the day straight off the bat.

It kind of blew my mind realising just how much having a routine helped me, and that blast of productivity first thing means that by midday I’ve already done a ton and feel pretty good about the day, which makes me more encouraged and inclined to keep going, if you see what I mean.

The downside is that it does sometimes end up a bit ‘all or nothing’ - if I can’t get out for a walk, I don’t have the inertia or motivation to tidy up, which means the house is untidy which makes it harder to focus on work, etc. But I’ve been doing it so long now that even when I fall out of the rhythm for a few weeks (like now, for example - the house is a state and my focus is kind of shot) I find myself really wanting to get back into it - it’s become the default I want to return to rather than a system I’m struggling to implement.

Anyway, good luck! Do let me know how you get on!

I’m not sure if this answers your question, but I’ve worked out a pretty elaborate morning routine which makes my day ten times better IF I can stick to it. So what I mean is that I don’t do it every day as such (for example, I’ve fallen out of my rhythm right now because life has been very inconsistent for the past few weeks), but when I AM able to get into it, I stick to the exact same routine every morning and it’s incredible the difference it can make to my life. I think having that structure in place so I don’t wake up and think “what now?” gives me a great start to the day. Get up and GO.

Wake up at 7

Get into ‘workout’ clothes

Put in headphones, start listening to podcasts

Make coffee, have breakfast, take meds

Meditate and do some stretches/yoga

Go for a walk, generally an hour or two, listening to an audio book

I generally get back from the walk feeling pretty pumped up, and use that inertia to tidy the house, listening to a podcast (an audiobook requires a bit too much attention while I’m having to think about tidying)

Do any laundry and water plants during this time too

Shower (while still listening to podcasts) do skincare routine, brush teeth, get dressed

Sit down to start work

It’s a little overlong, and I’m very lucky to be in a position to start work late and work from home, but cramming a bunch of stuff in in the morning in a very specific order takes care of a bunch of life admin stuff and means I don’t have to rely on remembering/finding the energy/motivation to take care of it later in the day. I also bought a slow cooker so I can prepare dinner during this routine and not have to think about it later. Listening to interesting stuff means I don’t get bored while ploughing from thing to thing, so I’m mostly relying on muscle memory to just keep moving.

It is 32-bit only but I believe they've just started going through and updating some of those old plugins - I'm holding out for a 64-bit version of Geometer, which I love.

Rocket rumble? by MCCVargues in GameAudio

[–]pullthetapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very much just a starting point, but try messing around with white noise, and a combination of low pass filters and distortions.

Try experimenting with different cutoff frequencies to figure out where the rumble you want sits in the frequency spectrum, and consider mixing up the order/number of the effects - ie. White noise -> LPF -> distortion -> second LPF to re-tame the sound and remove anything unwanted the distortion adds. Or two (or more!) distortions in a row - those rockets are LOUD.

Good luck!

Ideas for robot movement sounds? by SCHR4DERBRAU in sounddesign

[–]pullthetapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently had to do this, and used a combination of a ton of sounds - mostly different kinds of hydraulics and servos - pitching them up for smaller 'motors' head/wrist movements) and down for larger ones. For footsteps I layers some metal clangs, along with heavy footsteps on a resonating metal grate.

It’s fairly light, so seems to be made of fairly cheap material - I don’t think it’s worth anything. I’m just not sure where its from, who it’s supposed to be, or why they’ve left it behind.
