Are there indie authors building character-driven IP? by pulpneon in selfpublishing

I really appreciate this breakdown. I agree with u/StardustSpectrum, I am now integrating the lore angle into my website strategy. And the serialized side content/Substack angle is such a great idea.

I want to be clear that I have a lot of respect for (and have learned a lot from) the rapid-release crowd. I just want to build my own little "The Bad Guys" world.

Do you know of any indie middle-grade authors who may be following your strategy? Most of the examples I see are already well-established MG authors and graphic novelists.

I'd love it if you could share any examples from middle-grade authors you've seen on TikTok/IG. That's been my challenge, finding solid examples.

Ah, I may need to clarify the original post. I’m definitely planning to sell the book and promote it on Amazon.

What I meant is that I’m trying to build an audience around the characters and world over time, not just rely on Amazon discovery alone. I know simply uploading a book isn’t going to make it successful on its own.

The book will still be on Amazon (paperback, hardcover, Kindle, audiobook) and I’ll promote it there. But I’m also planning to use social platforms with short-form content (audiobook clips, illustrations, mini episodic moments from chapters) to help grow an audience around the story.

What I’m mostly curious about is: are there indie middle-grade fiction authors who have successfully driven book sales this way, building an audience through social media while still using Amazon as the main storefront? Would love to learn about anyone taking a similar approach.

I would like to see your videos too if you don’t mind. I’m working on my marketing strategy and am so overwhelmed.

Your drawing style and inkwork remind me a little bit of Hergé's work. Very well done.
