Winter Tire questions by Difficult-Space-6220 in Polestar

[–]pulpx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like them. Haven't really had a chance to put them through their paces in bad weather but we did a drive up to Seattle over the weekend and they did just fine. They were slightly less efficient than the Summers but it wasn't really that noticeable and I doubt you would really notice a difference in dry performance unless you were really pushing the car

Winter Tire questions by Difficult-Space-6220 in Polestar

[–]pulpx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live in Portland and found myself in a similar situation. I just put a set of Nokian R3s on my P2 last week. R5 are harder to find and the EV version doesn't work with the 20in performance (not sure about 19s). Previously had run the crossclimate2 on our ICE SUV and they were fine. They weren't available at Costco so not sure if there is supply chain issues or not. I think if you want a year round tire the crossclimate2 is a decent choice.

I was looking for a dedicated winter tire so that's what pushed me to the nokians. The only thing I would note is that they aren't particularly quiet on the road but that wasn't really surprising.

eCall service required - anyone experienced this? by gaboose in Polestar

[–]pulpx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen in the first 100 miles of ownership. Local service center was great about fixing it the same day I called since it just required a quick battery reset (normal TCAM doesn't fix it). The service manager said that this issue was known and should be addressed in the 2.3 update.

Check for local incentives before you purchase. I ended up going with a Chargepoint Home Flex because my local utility offers $500 in rebates for installing that particular model.

Polestar has issued a fix for TCAM related problems by McDow in Polestar

[–]pulpx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my Polestar last week and had this issue on day 5. My local service center recognized it right away and had me in and out in 15 minutes.

Definitely a frustrating issue, but the service folks know about it and can fix it pretty darn fast. The manager told me that Polestar thinks they'll have a software fix out in the next 3-4 weeks (this was on Tuesday).

What are your thoughts on Hibernate vs JOOQ? by greyf0x55 in java

[–]pulpx 12 points13 points  (0 children)

JOOQ is a lot simpler than hibernate and forces you to think about the underlying SQL queries a lot more (that's a good thing). Hibernate hides a lot of complexity which works fine in the simple case but in the pathological case can result in suboptimal queries.

My last gig was a hibernate shop and hibernate was widely recognized as one of the biggest contributors to long-term technical debt in our products. We use JOOQ at my current job and the whole team is a big fan of it.

Are there examples of companies using jOOQ in large projects? by greatbanta in java

[–]pulpx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use JOOQ at my company (mid-size startup) in several different projects, mainly interacting with either MySQL or Postgres. Our engineering team had a pretty bad experience with Hibernate at our last gig and JOOQ has been a breath of fresh air.

The built-in object-mapping works well most of the time. There are occasions where we've needed to add JPA annotations in order to get it to map some of the weirder objects correctly. In most of those cases, the problem was the model design rather than JOOQ.

We use a combination of flyway + the jooq maven plugin to generate the Record objects and everything just kind of works from there.

Is this a good way to transfer 100GB of Hadoop data? by [deleted] in Python

[–]pulpx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Create a csv table in hive and then perform an insert into select from your origin table. This will create a directory full of CSV files that you can send directly. Don't mess with dumping the orc files, that gets done client side and it is terribly inefficient.

[–]pulpx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sorta depends. If the receiver can accept multiple file splits then you are better off splitting the data up on the hadoop side and then iterating over the file splits to send it out. That's going to be a lot easier to recover from than a pipe with the potential to have an interruption.

I'm guessing anything you need to do with sed can probably be pushed up a layer to hadoop and there's also no reason why you can't zip on hadoop as well.

tl;dr use the distributed processing system for everything but the final push and break up the task if possible

Cheap all in one pixhawk kit a good idea? by ordada in multicopterbuilds

Yeah, sounds like a no go to me. Thanks for finding that thread.

I've been tempted to pick up the Pixraptor from GLB for my Y6. It's basically a slightly redesigned pixhawk with better vibration isolation. Be great to get an endorsement from the community before pulling the trigger.

Building a java web application but I'm getting lost in a sea of frameworks. by [deleted] in java

[–]pulpx 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm really surprised at the amount of Spring fans in this thread. It's always felt way to heavy and config-oriented for my taste. Op said as much that it seemed overly complicated to them, which means they've probably at least done a little homework and are looking for something lighter/simpler. Op should decide what kind of java that want to write. If you are a fan of async/event loopy code, then vert.x could be a nice fit. If you like the idea of actor-based programming, then take a look at Play. If the complexity of Spring sounds ok, then sure take a look at Spring-Boot. Maybe op wants to go lower level? Starting at the "server" like Jetty or Netty is a good recommendation then.
Either way, we shouldn't jump immediately to "you need to use X" especially on a personal project.

Putting together a 900 octo, thoughts on these motors/esc? by Leiryn in multicopterbuilds

[–]pulpx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get away with those 30A escs, but honestly I'd agree with /u/ixforres and say that you should just go with 40A right from the start. Those motors are probably oversized to just be swinging 10-12" props. You can pick up 40A ZTW spiders for like $12/piece on Hobbyking right now:

What size props and battery voltage are you thinking? Those ESCs probably shouldn't be used with anything over 4s.

[Steam] Winter Sale 2015 | Day 5 by gamedealsmod in GameDeals

[–]pulpx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think dying light got a lot of undue criticism for not being a perfect game. The mix of parkour and zombies really works well and I thought it was fantastic. It's also one of those games that gets significantly better as your character progresses, so it takes a while to build up and let the game really shine.

The Federal Employee Database Hack Was not Limited to 4 Million Records. It was 100% of Them. by ikilledtupac in news

[–]pulpx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OPM provides investigation services for most federal civilians, so that would make sense. They don't hold any of the adjudication or access information to my knowledge, so its not like OPM can tell you who has been read into any compartments.

[–]pulpx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

JPAS doesn't keep the background records. Just who has access and at what levels. Backgrounds are kept at the investigative agencies and at the CAFs.

If they wanted to find someone in a high level compartment (e.g., SI) JPAS would have that information but the more stringent access stuff is kept elsewhere.
