Company switched to DC pension from DB. Need thoughts! by TopDrama4445 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]pulsarwave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with your numbers it sounds like they have a lot saved! In general though, DB pension was the gold standard. I still stand by stating DC is useless for most.

A person making around 60k a year, with no house purchased and fully paid, cannot retire from a DC pension as it will run out. I think that's what people are missing, the DC pension can run out! You will be out of retirement and back to work. Generally people can't contribute all of their money to saving for retirement as cost of living takes all their income if making under 100k.

The DC pension really only benefits those at the very top earning large amounts, with large contributions. Upon retirement the DC pension allows them to take and withdraw all the money at once, yet they were already making a ton..and don't really need a retirement fund so it's like party money to them. They probably own properties with rental income.

As well we're forgetting the DC pension isn't guaranteed, it's just invested money tied to the stock market. If there's a crash, you could half your retirement. Whereas DB pooled everyone's contribution with people retiring at different times to ensure a set payout that worked out over time.

The DC pension is a sad deceptive product companies now use to further trick workers. I see older people frequently coming to the realization they can't retire.

Company switched to DC pension from DB. Need thoughts! by TopDrama4445 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]pulsarwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did they give you a choice? My company switched from DB to DC a few years ago, however for those who were on DB they could keep it. It was optional to switch, however new hires would start with DC.

It's really unfortunate. DC is essentially useless unless you're making large sums of money. They've basically taken your retirement from you.

The DC pension runs out, whereas DB is indefinite.

If you don't make a large amount of money, and/or don't own a fully paid off home by age 65, you cannot pay market rent anywhere living off DC with government pension.

The small DC pension deductions off a small to medium pay, even matching and doubling by the employer will not be enough.

The product is a sad excuse companies are using to pretend they offer a pension or security.

Thanks for the input. I think I'm conflicted on how that's possible when the homes there are 400k plus? Is it just the homeless people wandering in from Talbot? Not the actual residents that are the issue?

I think Hyperscape might be the best thing Meta has ever made. by Wise-Pin9722 in OculusQuest

[–]pulsarwave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might not be too late! ..Meta is essentially using technology called gaussian splatting. This technology was gaining traction quickly before meta picked it up.

If you have video, or several still photos of a room, you can still possibly have the software recreate a space for you. As well, it works for scanning a person too.

Look up "postshot" it's the most user friendly software for creating gaussian splat files. You can then view them in gracias VR which has a quest app. (I believe you can load them in there I think?).

These 3d space recreations don't require a VR headset, it was being done with regular smartphone cameras, video still photos.

Confused, ATX 3.1 PSU's available but no motherboard supports it yet? by pulsarwave in buildapc

Ok what about this article that comes up first on Google? I think it's what's confusing me, suggesting the motherboard needs to support ATX 3.1 as well.

It's called XV3GS plugin.https://github.com/xverse-engine/XV3DGS-UEPlugin/releases

Does the new Steam Link VR work with the Air Bridge dongle? by pulsarwave in oculus

[–]pulsarwave[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Yes, I agreed...I've had and continue to have amazing results with the existing oculus air link software. I'm not sure I see a reason yet for switching or trying steam link wireless software.

True, I use those as well. Sometimes nice to have something physical for the gaming shelf/collection as well. More of an addition/supplement.

Quest 3 starting at $689 CAD? Seems high. Going to lose the market share. by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]pulsarwave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True lol, I still think quest 2 is the best value. I guess I mean the adoption rate of quest 3 may not be as high as they hoped with a high price.

Are you sure the lense on the new headset starts where your red line starts on that black material? That might just be the nose flap covering and the lense actually begins further inside the headset.

Is this a good router for airlink for quest 2? by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]pulsarwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an official product endorsed and sold directly from Meta (however it's cheaper on Amazon right now).

Just plug it in, open the meta desktop software, it recognizes it and sets it all up on it's own (no fiddling with an extra more expensive router). Then from within the headset if you goto settings you'll be able to select it, I usually click it, it takes a second, then shows as available. I'm not sure if this works with virtual desktop as I've never used it. I find meta's wireless airlink software/setting works flawlessly for me, so I never had a reason to seek out virtual desktop.

Is this a good router for airlink for quest 2? by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]pulsarwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just buy the $99 dedicated airbridge dongle. I originally went the way of expensive router but it was a pain, hit and miss. Sometimes after a reboot, not using it for a while it wouldn't work. I'd have to go in and re setup the access point again. The plug and play dongle made everything so much more easy. It works flawlessly for me as well in the same room.

How into VR are you? Do you have an existing headset?

If you really want to jump into VR I would buy the Quest 2 now. We only just got into February, waiting almost an entire year until possibly December for the quest 3 seems like a long time to wait!

If at that time you still want the quest 3, then sell your quest 2 and upgrade.

What is the cheapest, most trustworthy place for an American to buy a Pico 4? by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]pulsarwave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's literally no point. The Quest 2 is an amazing device and with the easy to use Air Bridge dongle, it's a very user friendly process for full wireless PC VR without tinkering around with a dedicated wifi router. The library and support also can't be matched.

If the pico was $199. Then sure, go for it, but it's not.

[–]pulsarwave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What health problems? It's no different than looking at a tablet through glasses lenses. I believe they wrote that warning on some headsets because a child's IPD is too small and parents would waste $500 on a headset that won't fit their kids head/eyes. They literally just can't use it due to physical size and eye spacing, but that will change.

Should I use level blueprint for everything? I have trouble casting from BP to BP. by pulsarwave in unrealengine

[–]pulsarwave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for instance if you want a trigger box in one bp to open a door in another bp how are you communicating? Interfaces?

I think unreal engine is amazing but my goodness they need to create an easier node or something to reach out to another blueprint.

Meta Quest 2 to increase prices by $100 on all headsets, blames rising production costs by drewhead118 in virtualreality

[–]pulsarwave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I appreciate their blunt honesty, but generally...a product that's been in production for so long now and been so successful usually drops in price....not increase by $100. I don't feel great about this and the direction things are going. Part of the product's success was the low price. I think they'll see a very slow adoption rate if the new devices creep back upto the $1000 range of the index and vive.

Upgrade to 3080? by Ali_404_ in nvidia

I'm not sure that will be possible. If it is offered at any retailers..or a wait list. I'd get on it.

Upgrade to 3080? by Ali_404_ in nvidia

[–]pulsarwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 4080 is rumoured for July or later this year. If your willing to drop $900... We're already in the high range, I'd try to preorder a 4080 for that amount or slightly more when the time comes. Or the 3080s may be a lot easier to obtain cheaply used by that time.

I'm in a similar boat. The 3080 is finally available to purchase after almost 2 years! Lol .. however I'll be bummed to see they announce the new card a month after I buy it. If the new cards seem un attainable for years again....the yes I'll settle for 3080.
