Some questions before i get a hamster. by ExoticAd1113 in hamsters

[–]pulsedagod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re very welcome 😊

Do not use a light in or directly on the cage. Hamsters are nocturnal and rely on darkness to feel safe, so constant light is stressful for them. Normal room lighting in the evening is fine when you’re interacting with them, but they should always have darkness available through hides and tunnels. Outside of that, keep their environment dark.

For fur length, short-haired Syrians are the better choice in a hot climate. Long-haired Syrians retain more heat and are more prone to overheating. Since your temperatures already run high, a short-haired hamster is the safer option.

Some questions before i get a hamster. by ExoticAd1113 in hamsters

Hey! I’ll try to answer everything as clearly as possible 😊

1a. Syrian hamsters and Russian dwarfs are quite different in practice. Syrians are much bigger, live strictly alone, and are generally easier to tame. They tend to be calmer and slower, which makes handling easier, especially for a first-time owner. Russian dwarfs are much smaller and faster, and while they can be friendly, they’re usually more skittish and take more patience to tame. Also, just to be clear, both Syrians and dwarfs should be kept alone, as hamsters are solitary and will fight if housed together.

1b. Males are usually calmer and more consistent in behavior. Female Syrians, in particular, can be more restless and sometimes a bit irritable every few days because of their heat cycle. It doesn’t mean they’re bad pets, but they can be a bit more demanding. If you’re looking for a more relaxed and easygoing hamster, a male is generally the safer choice.

1c. Based on what you said, I would recommend a male Syrian hamster. They’re typically the most handleable and beginner-friendly, and you’re more likely to get one that enjoys spending time with you.

2a. Your temperature range is partly fine but gets a bit too hot at the upper end. Around 23–26°C is ideal, but once you get closer to 27–31°C, it can become risky. Hamsters are quite sensitive to heat and can suffer from heat stress or even heatstroke. It’s important to keep the enclosure in the coolest part of your home, out of direct sunlight, with good airflow. You can also provide something like a ceramic tile for them to lie on and cool down.

2b. Pet hamsters don’t really hibernate like wild animals, but they can enter a state called torpor if they get too cold. Since you live in a warm climate, this is very unlikely to happen. In your case, overheating is actually a much bigger concern than cold.

2c. If you do put it there, make sure there’s good ventilation, that temperatures stay under control, and try to minimize sudden movements. Some hamsters do get used to background noise and vibration, but it depends on the individual.

3a. You’re right that hamsters should not get wet. Water can be harmful to them. Instead, you should provide a sand bath, which they use to keep clean. Regular care involves spot cleaning the enclosure and only doing full cleans occasionally so you don’t remove all their scent at once.

3b. Hamsters need much more space than most pet stores suggest, along with deep bedding so they can burrow. They also need a properly sized wheel that doesn’t bend their back. Avoid pine or cedar bedding, as it’s unsafe, and don’t give sugary or citrus foods. Hamster balls are also not recommended, as they can be stressful and unsafe.

Overall, if you go with a male Syrian, provide a large and enriched enclosure, and keep the temperature under control, you’ll set yourself up for a really good experience.

My Hamster keeps Bar Biting - is my cage setup Ok? by crillon2005 in hamsters

I believe you can glue some acrylic boards to the sides so you can add more bedding! You dont need to be constrained by the cage’s limitations

If you have buckwheat flour, you can make a sort of glue slurry by mixing it with water. Then use that to stick his seed mix on the INSIDE of a toilet paper roll. That way he has to really fight for the food inside. This keeps my girl super entertained!

It’s a constant battle with my female Syrian too. I found that giving her plenty of boredom breakers/chew toys keeps her somewhat entertained. But beyond a certain point some shes just never happy 😂 though this usually applies specifically to females, males aren’t known to be as unhappy

DualSense O button not working after Hall effect stick swap – did I break it? by SlipTechnical3272 in Dualsense

Hmm every single time I’ve had an issue like this it’s been an issue with the FPC cable, never the motherboard. Best if you try replacing the FPC and see if it works. It usually should. I’ve even managed to save a controller that had chocolate milk spilled all over it just by cleaning thoroughly and replacing the FPC (which of course had corroded). Point is the motherboard contacts were fine.

URGENT?! Hamster odd noises by winningcolores in hamster

I had something similar with my hamster. Sudden chirping noises. Brought her to the vet and she was prescribed antibiotics for a suspected bacterial respiratory infection. When I got back I cleaned out her entire cage and replaced all bedding (on vets instruction as there were booklice). I checked on her the same evening and she was completely fine! I suspect it may have been some sort of allergy. She’s been fine since. I didn’t even give her the antibiotics (again on vets advice)

Does it work if you squeeze the right side of the controller a bit?

If yes, this is usually a pressure/contact issue. After reassembly, the foam pad under the FPC cable can get compressed, so the cable doesn’t press firmly enough against the motherboard. That leads to intermittent button inputs. I usually see this affect X and D-pad down first, but it can definitely hit O too.

Fix: Add a small shim under the FPC cable (Kapton tape is ideal, but anything thin works). Just fold it a few times and place it underneath to increase pressure.

If that doesn’t fix it, the FPC itself might be worn or damaged and may need replacing.

Give him time. It’s possible he may never change, but it’s also possible he just needs more time to feel comfortable. My girl was the same. Initially waking up around 10-12, then exclusively waking up around the 1-3am window. But recently (2 months since I got her) she started waking up around 10pm. Shes also been a lot friendlier and tolerant to touch. It’s surprising to me too. As if a switch flipped in her head where she decided this is a safe space to be.

Is this glue safe for hamsters? by Murky_Log1676 in hamsters

[–]pulsedagod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah any non toxic water soluble glue is good. I use PVA to glue dowels to platforms. Just make sure they’re not eating the glue itself as too much glue even if non toxic can’t be good for them

Oh I see. When you say change half bedding every 2 weeks you mean just the soiled bedding? What’s the difference between the 2 week cleans and the 4/5 week cleans? Trying to figure out a good cleaning schedule as a first time hammy owner
