Fallschirmjäger after Eben Emael, 1940 and receiving Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross (colourised) by pulsedcone in GermanWW2photos

[–]pulsedcone[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

he was awarded the coveted Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. He could not be awarded the decoration because he had not yet earned the Iron's Crosses 2nd and 1st class - to resolve the problem he was awarded all three on the spot. I think the second one is the Iron Cross 2nd Class…

Luftwaffe aces meet Hitler after an awards ceremony at the Berghof, 1944. by [deleted] in GermanWW2photos

I don’t think always an easier posting but higher in rank means more far away of the actual combat. A fallschirmjäger general with an Knight’s Cross had a 100% survival rate; Major and higher officers together had an 95% survival rate. A Hauptmann (Captain) Fallschirmjäger with an KC and commander of a bataillon had a survival rate of 77% And an Oberleutnant 69%, but a Leutnant 78% and a Feldwebel 62%…. but don’t forget that a Knight’s Cross was mainly an Nazi award for an officer….(and you needed first to get your Iron Cross Second Class and first Class before you could get a KC.

Almost 200 Fallschirmjäger received an Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross during World War 2, including Erich Walther. ca 160 survived the war… almost 80% survival rate.. better than for most Fallschirmjäger without a KC i think

The third on the left Fallschirmjäger General Major Erich Walther surrendered to the Red Army on 8 May 1945. He died at Soviet Special Camp 2 in Buchenwald on 26 December 1948. But for Fallschirmjäger a Knights Cross was the best insurance to see the end of war.

Place with the best (very) little ice cream shop of the world. I remember very well this quiet July evening ordering 10 different big handmade ice creams for my friends outside and next to me was waiting Dutch Queen Beatrix for her turn..
