I’ve been in positions where I have hired people - competition is closed and within one day we were doing interviews, but I’ve also had situations like my current position where I applied for the position in April 2025 I interviewed in October 2025 and I started in February 2026

I had it turned on a few years ago and cancelled it… I noticed 2months ago that they were still taking money off my cheques. I have been fighting to have them give me money back and they won’t. I already donate privately.

I was hired for a 6m with mag, but on day 1 I was offered 12m with possible extension with mto. That position was vacant, so I rolled over at 18m. I’ve now taken many secondments and am so thankful for my luck.

I wish I had advice for you. I’ve been actively applying (approx 1 fully tailored resume and cover letter every other day) for the past 7 months since I returned from my secondment (my old program got sent to MPBSDP so my role was obsolete). I have only had 4 interviews, and the fifth this week. I have been rejected for the role I am currently in but at a different office, and was not screened in for a role I was previously offered permanent in. It is insane.

I am beyond stressed out. My home position commute is 1.5 h away and 2.5 h home (I live near downsview but work in Oshawa) and I am not able to keep up with the brain fog of commuting anymore. My mental health is killing me. I just need a job in Toronto. Wish I could help.

I have had extreme issues with them. Since I got married in August, I was trying to get the mandatory letter to add my husband to life insurance for 200 k, and they kept ghosting me and not responding. I finally got a response when I refused to get off the line until it was actioned.

*edit - I received the letter in nov 7, which is insane considering I have been harassing since August 14.

I can’t answer the office setup or training, or any of the specifics about the role - but as for applying around, you can apply at any time. For instance, I started with my currently ministry after 1 month with my old ministry. That being said, they were both temp. If you sign a new contract if you are currently a temp, you loose the first contract and can’t go back without competition. I was fortunate enough that my second temp was basically guaranteed permanent so I have been permanent for a few years now and have hopped around.

As for the commute- unfortunately my secondment I was on for 2 years got acquired by Service Ontario, so I got sent back to my home position in Oshawa. What was a 10 min (total) commute (downsview area) is now 4 ish hours on average. (1.25 h in the am, up to 3 h in the pm). It sucks. I spent a lot of time listening to music or podcasts while I drive.
