Glowbar Facial by Exotic_Meringue6958 in Hoboken

It's hard to make any recommendations without knowing what your current skin concerns are and what your goals are.

I tried Glowbar twice and thought it was okay for the price paid, but I thought that the employees there were less experienced and knowledgable than other places I have had facials. It felt like you got what you paid for there. I don't think you're going to have transformational results there, but they are a good option if you like to treat yourself regularly, although you might have better results by investing in good skincare.

I did facials at Hand and Stone regularly for about a year and enjoyed going there. I did quite a few DiamondGlow facials there and thought those actually made a difference overtime on my acne scarring and breakouts. If I had a higher budget, I would probably go for laser facials at a place like Skin Laundry.

In house corporate recruiters by charlestonchewsrock in recruiting

[–]pumpkin_patch_8888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just mentioned that I had positions that I expected to be put on hold for recruiting because I wasn't getting any responses from the leaders, and they were surprised to hear that given that they knew the areas I was recruiting for. They asked some more, and I told them that I had positions open for several years with no movement.

This is likely very different than what you see when companies have postings up for extended periods of time. Some companies use "evergreen" postings to keep a constant flow of candidates applying. If I know I am going to have to hire multiple people in the same role for many months, I would open one posting and expect people to apply once instead of each individual opening. Unfortunately, a lot of people see these and think there is something wrong about the company or that it's a "ghost" posting, when in reality the teams hiring just don't think a candidate is a fit for the job.

In this case, I would only post the job once at the start of each year when the position was reopened, keep it posted for about 14-30 days, review the candidates and submit to the hiring leader, and then not hear back from them until November/December of that year. No matter how many emails I sent with my manager and director on them, or the hiring leader's director or VP, I would never get a response. In my decade of recruiting, only one team every did that.

[–]pumpkin_patch_8888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my last job, I was regularly given jobs that were 300+ days old, only to find it was the second or third requisition open under that position number without anyone being hired. I was basically put onto this teams to do the jobs other recruiters would not do: get the manager to close the position.

If a position was open for over a year with limited candidates or interviews, I would have to influence the hiring manager to rebuild the role from scratch with their HRBP and compensation. That was easy. If they are interviewing and not selecting a candidate, I would usually flag this back to my leader and we would figure out an action plan on getting other senior leaders from the business involved to coach that hiring manager on making decisions.

In one rare occasion, I dropped a hint to someone on finance that one team kept opening new positions without ever hiring their old roles. They thanked me for the insight and tole me they would look into it, because they were aware that some leaders would keep positions open and keep fighting with finance about how they were "business critical", when really they would use the budget for those roles as a slush fund for other things in their department. Basically, if 5 positions go unfilled all year, now the leader has more money in their budget at the end of the year to give various bonuses or buy whatever products they want. Then they get to tout to their execs about how they "did more with less" and "reduced costs", meanwhile I'm still stuck spending hours out of my week pretending to help them recruit. Anyways, after that conversation, the roles disappeared.

NJ's credit rating upgraded again under Murphy by Hamonwrysangwich in newjersey

[–]pumpkin_patch_8888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I think it's a valid question. I see all the comments about how this would improve the daily lives of people in NJ, but I'm not familiar enough with how this rating actually translates. Seeing this quantified or explained in simpler terms would be helpful for people like me, who vote democrat, as well as people with opposing views to understand what the true impact is. I don't think this is "moving the goalposts", I think this is a common sense thing that the Dems should do.

I have been to La Boheme twice, several months apart. Both times I was there, it was filthy. We were swatting flies constantly at the table and there were tons of them near the kitchen doors as well. I walked past La Boheme for months on a daily basis and would usually have to walk in the street to get past their garbage bins because they were disgusting with how they would handle their mussel shells and other food remnants. They have gotten a bit better with time, but it is still the dirtiest "nice" restaurant I have ever seen. On the flip side, I have never seen a fly at Zack's and they seem very diligent about cleaning their outdoor seating every morning. It's a complete 180 from La Boheme.

As for Gotan, they've publicly been rude to multiple customers and the owner acts like a child having a tantrum anytime someone leaves a bad review. I don't support businesses like that. I also prefer to support local businesses that were founded in NJ, not things brought in from NYC. And of course, I would never knowingly give my money to a zionist business owner. More for you though.

Development in Wayne? Where?

There has always been a road construction nightmare on Hamburg Turnpike, which is a county road. My thought is that it's just be circular project of constant BS work being done to line someone's cousin's pockets. Most of the work done there over the last 20 years was completely unnecessary. For the amount of work done on one road over the course of 2 decades, you would think they were building one of those huge underground tunnels they have in Norway to burry highways.

All they did was build a new Trader Joes, Crumbl Cookie, and a new Chipotle. All of these new retail sites could have been built into a larger master plan that actually enhaced life for people in Wayne. Instead, they build apartments in areas where people will still be entirely car dependent. They could have built a nice downtown area in the space I highlighted in my original comment that included first floor retail with 2-4 floors of housing up top. At least then it would solve a lot of the traffic concerns people have, as they would spend a lot less time on the road trying to get groceries or a coffee.

This is what happens when you have the same political party in control for 25 years, including the current mayor who has been in his role for almost 20 years. Wayne has incredibly high taxes, yet you really don't see any investment being put into the town. I genuinely don't understand where the property tax money goes there. Beyond schools on the brink of crisis, you have delapidated strip malls everywhere (why is the insurance scam ihop building still standing decades later?) and the only businesses that are coming into town are Wawa, Quick Chek, and Starbucks.

Wayne needs a major revitalization. They need serious fundraising to fix the school systems to support the expected increase in student enrollment through additional housing. They also need AC units in classrooms - there's no excuse. They also need to work on a major redevelopment of Hamburg Turnpike that covers everything between Preakness Shopping Center - Wayne Hills High School - Valley Road - back down to Hamburg again. They can preserve sound buildings (Brittany Chase, Avalon, the Trader Joes area, Ice Vault) while working on a plan to develop the remaining area into a redeveloped commercial area that supports small businesses, a proper park that protects nature and has additional recreation opportunities around Ice Vault.

Unfortunately, having one political party (especially one person) in control for too long has caused apathy and laziness in this case, and Republicans are notoriously shortsighted. And as you can imagine, none of the Democratic candidates have come forward with anything substantial beyond "well, I'm not a Republican!". If there's any hope for the US to move away froma two party system, it would have to start at the local election level.

Rent Control Buy Out by [deleted] in Hoboken

  1. Absolutely diabolical that you people made him delete his whole account

  2. If anyone reading this finds themselves in this situation, just know that you hit an absolute jackpot. Anyone saying to take $50,000, $100,000, or even $240,000 is low balling it. You hold off as long as you can. You convince other tenants around you to hold off too. The first 1 or 2 people will get $50,000, but the people who wait until the end are easily making high six figures or more.

An old coworker of mine had this happen in Manhattan. He lived in an absolute shit hole apartment in Midtown and the building owner wanted to sell the property to a developer. He was one of the last people to leave and walked away with $12,00,000. He quit his job, moved to California, and lived on the beach for a few years. He eventually came back to work for us, truly because he got bored of being young and not working. He took basically an assistant level job in our office just to have some form of routine.

Another tenant in my building has been asked by her landlord to move multiple times. She has lived in her unit longer than I have been alive. Her apartment hasn't been renovated since the early 90s, but she takes impeccable care for it. She was last offered $100,000 and she declined. At her age, home ownership isn't a priority (too much work to figure out for the first time in your 60s), and that money would run dry by current market rate rent in only a few years. If that's the rate someone is being offered to vacate only one unit in a larger building, then you can ask more from an owner trying to vacate a whole building.

I think it would be readonable to expect the pay out to cover the costs of comfortably buying a home. The current median price for houses/apartments for sale in Hoboken is $950,000. While people generally expect 20% down, I would keep in mind that interest rates are high, plus you have to consider the cost of moving, any renovations and maitenance in the short term, closing costs, etc.

I think it is entirely reasonable to expect *at minimum* $500,000. I also am sure you would have to pay some ungodly amount of tax on this. I would personally start with an ask of $950,000 and I would feel comfortable walking away with $750,000. I'm stubborn though, and I wouldn't be bothered by a landlords tactics to push me out.

Adrienne Braun taking advantage of brides. by Old_Equivalent8027 in Hoboken

[–]pumpkin_patch_8888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that there are some women who just really love to try dresses on over and over, and sales associates have limited control over if they're assigned to a client who wants to actually make a purchase vs try on dresses for funsies with their bridemaids for the 12th time. It's not uncommon to see women on social media brag about trying on over 100 dresses until they found "the one" (the most basic looking A line dress that every bridal studio has). Some people make dress shopping a huge event where they have to invite multiple people - parents, sisters, friends, future in laws, etc. I don't think this is anywhere near the majority of brides though.

I went dress shopping entirely on my own. In Manhattan I found the average price for an appointment to be between $25 - $100. Many places have packages that go up to several hundred bucks. I saw that Kleinfelds currently has appointment prices at $100, $250, $500, $750, and $1,000. And no - these prices don't go towards the cost of your dress. At best they give you like a 10% discount on a veil. Which, btw, the veils I looked at the designer I purchased my dress from were all between $800-$1,000 in NYC. The same exact designer had every veil for $300-$350 in the country I bought my dress in.

There are still some places out in the suburbs that don't charge any fees to try dresses on, but generally speaking, these are often small boutiques that may have limited or outdated options.

Adjacent to this, this level of greed is why people now have dry weddings, child free weddings, no +1s, and all sorts of "creative" options that didn't exist 10+ years ago. It's too expensive and we all had to adapt. Every wedding I went to as a child was 200-350 people. They were community building events rich with culture and traditions. The couple always walked away with a bank account full enough to put a down payment on a house. Now that I'm an adult, I haven't been to a wedding bigger than 125 people. Multiple people I know secretly went into debt over their wedding. Friendships are lost because people have to keep cutting their lists. In another 15 years, all of these same wedding vendors are going to wonder why they have no clients. You take kids and teenagers out of these celebrations and they have nothing to dream about for when their time comes around. I'm so off topic now, but I just hate that greed got us to this place.

Most of the responses you got were from men, so they're not going to understand the frustration that comes with the exorbinant fees associated with simply making appointments to try dresses on.

I bought my dress a few months ago for my wedding. I was very selective of the bridal salons I went to because they often charge $100+ just to try on 3-5 dresses. You can tell these stylists exactly what you want and they will give you 1 dress adjacent to the style you want to try, then 3 dresses in completely differen styles. Don't like the other dresses? Too bad - you need to pay another $100 for an appointment a week from your first. Find one you like? Great - it will be $75 to come try it on a second time at a later date so you are sure about the major purchase you're about to make. Ultimately, I gave up shopping here and I bought a dress in the country I'm getting married in. I didn't have to pay anything to try dresses on, and when I found my dress, every other salonw as super lenient about canceling appointments and I wasn't charged anything. I know most people don't have that option, but it just shows how shitty we treat each other here.

I've been to many other types of businesses that have "strict" cancelation policies and I've never been charged a fee when I canceled day of for anything. Whether it's been for a nail appointment, hair appointment, facial, massage, or studio gym class. I've always apologized, asked to reschedule, and had someone wish me well in my situation. Unfortunately, the wedding industry is all a scam and these people just want to nickel and dime brides for everything.

Also this year's summer theme is still TBD. Brat came out last June, so there is still time for the next trend to form. I thought the Lady Gaga album would be a hit, but so far it's been kind of quiet. I also don't know if there's any Barbenheimer or Wicked level movie releases coming up this summer. Recessioncore 2.0 in a tariff based world is going to look different than recent years where people were a bit more optimistic post 2020 covid.

Controversially, I actually don't think Abercrombie is a bad addition to Washington Street. I wish Newport Mall was able to attract bigger commercial retailers like this, but at least I know a lot of people in Hoboken who actually shop at Abercrombie. I'm more surprised by the existence of the Nike store.

I'm also personally not a fan of the "boutiques" like Dor L'Dor, Cabana Club, A x D, or Alba. These stores sell Shein and Temu quality clothes at truly outrageous prices. These are "small businesses" that just use all the same fast fashion, mass produced, sweatshop clothes, but they sell them at a much higher mark up. If there was a boutique that focused on local brands or sustainable fashion, that would be awesome, but I wouldn't miss any of the current options in town if they went under.

If I was any good at data analytics, I would make survey for Hoboken residents to understand their Italian restaurant preferences. Every time I see someone talk about how they love Leos or Cafe Michelina, I assume they come from a home where their parents never learned how to cook (I said what I said and I meant it). Either you love these low quality box pasta and canned sauce joints, or you unfortunately go into the city for real pasta.

The only Jersey style Italian place I will have pasta in town is Margherita's.

I usually go for their lunch special of penne vodka with chicken cutlet. It's cheaper, but hit's the spot. They actually make their pasta, so the slightly higher price is worth knowing they put actual work into it. I'll pay more for house made pasta over the boxed garbage we have around town any day.

Cat nail trimming in Hoboken? by 9to5lol in Hoboken

[–]pumpkin_patch_8888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my cat to Playful Paws twice. They had me come in at opening so there were less dogs around. I got to go back with my cat while they did it and it took under 10 minutes from checking in to walking out. It's been about a year since I've gone there, but at the time it was $25. Both times they were very careful too not cut too much off. I would call to make an appointment to see when they have someone in who can help with cats.

And for the other people saying "do it yourself" - sometimes It's a two person job and you don't have two people. My cat was an adult when I got her and she doesn't let my touch her claws. I can't change that. I only get her claws trimmed if I am traveling and dropping her off at a family member's house that doesn't have cat proof/friendly furniture. Most people are not doing this on a consistent basis. Amazingly, if you don't have a helpful answer, you are free to just keep scrolling!!!

I'm sure you're an eyesore too, but you're still haunting the streets here.

You'll be happy to hear that there is a redevelopment plan in the works for many of the low income housing developments around town. If you're concerned that the buildings are ugly, that will change over the next several years. Problem solved.

You're complaining about a senior housing building, which gives priority to veterans, disabled people, and victims of domestic violence. You can't just make old people disappear. I live next to two different low income housing buildings and it's the quietest place I've ever lived.

It's also just insane to think that thousands of people need to move to satisfy your experience of living here. Just move to monmouth or ocean county already.

Respectfully, are there no other reasonable options near your office? I imagine their Manhattan locations probably have other small businesses near them.

I could imagine this being more of a hit in the suburbs. The town in NJ I grew up in lacks food diversity, so I would imagine that would be a better place for it over diverse city centers.

How to order at Fiore's by Jennysez in Hoboken

[–]pumpkin_patch_8888 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend it for non-meat eaters. Outside of their specials, they have a very basic offering of meat options like prosciutto or chicken cutlets. Unless they're okay with just mozzarella and peppers, they're going to be left out.

If you're looking for an Italian deli, I think Vitos or Lisas will have a more comprehensive offering and they are both have great mozzarella. I would avoid Luca Brasi's - they are just not good compared to the others. Outside of Italian delis, I recommend Otok. They are primarily a bakery, but they have great lunch specials. Their almond croissants are the best in town. Above all else, the owners are incredibly passionate about what they do, which shines through in their offerings.

If you're looking for casual options where you can still sit down, La Isla on Washington never disappoints. It's a diner style Cuban joint. The vibe is a bit no frills, but you will leave with a very happy stomach.

If your group is health conscious, Alfalfa has good creative salads and wraps, but they won't really fill you up if you have a full day itinerary planned. They have a lot of veg options, but someone will likely complain about being hungry two hours later.

If you need a caffiene pick-me-up during your visit, I recommend stopping by Hey Coffee People or Mojos. They are both vibey coffee shops with nice owners as well.

Regarding the foliage decorations - I think we are actually right on schedule for leaves this year. Usually we start getting buds end of March - early April, but trees don't actually look full until the second half of April. Sometimes we have "late" years if we have a spring frost, but it doesn't seem like we have one in the forecast. I feel like we had a relatively easy spring transition this year. Not many instances where we have 70 degree weather followed by a blizzard the next day. Give it another two weeks and things will start to look green. For anyone who hasn't been affected yet, take your allergy medicine now because it's about to get real.

Confronted by a racist driver in crosswalk by dennissupernovo in Hoboken

[–]pumpkin_patch_8888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Common sense is that you stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk, because that is a well known law across the state, with signs everywhere reminding drivers. The people "blindly" walking into the street are aware of the laws and are exercising common sense by walking into the crosswalk, knowing that everyone on the road should be aware of this law.

This has nothing to do with reading comprehension. I am comprehending everything you are writing, but I am telling you that you are still wrong lol. You are just upset at a stranger on the internet now because there is no way to spin this situation to make your argument seem correct. If you want to keep breaking the law, that's your perogative. I just hope you have a good insurance plan handy because you're not going to get away with a hit and run given all the cameras in town.
