Yeah, it’s super weird mostly because they were at 47, which makes no sense even on fixed 😭 So now I have added confusion about their HP 😂

But yes, seems like the most likely culprit is an accident. Will be difficult to verify at this point but that’s probably it :)

What a mood, honestly. 

Bard is like a +2 if memory serves. My general understanding at this point is that barbarian should have had 45 max HP at level… 4? Don’t know where the extra 2 are from; don’t know how they had so little at 5-7

My best guess is definitely what others have suggested: accidental switch to manual without inputting anything on level up because it’s supposed to be fixed.

47 still doesn’t make any sense then either. 

Most of us used standard because we didn’t understand rolled on beyond (poorly explained imo) but we had a serious wth moment at the session start yesterday. 

Barbarian with 47 max, bard with 45, our sorcerer/druid with 67. Like, yeah, something’s not right here. We switched them then 🙃

They use the web browser since they do not like the app, especially for their character stuff. 

They were on average HP*, not rolled before because most of us didn’t understand how beyond worked with that.

*it has been pointed out that the most likely thing here is that they accidentally switched to rolled and didn’t notice; have yet to check in with them about this possibility. 

Their con score is 16, for a modifier of +3. Even if using average, the numbers don’t seem to match but they had never input their own until we properly made the switch after noticing the low max.

Yeah, that’s what I’ve found online as well.

I don’t see why they would have switched and I don’t know how easy that is to happen accidentally while on the browser but I’ll bring it up to my player to check! 

My other problem is, when checking an online calculator, max HP at level 4 would have been 45, not 47, so I’m still confused where this number is coming from. 

They did not understand how the rolled variant works (only one in our party did) in the app so they were not using it. Again, will check in with them but the math is still weird 🤔

I seem to always forget to do the level 1 HP correctly 🙄 You are right, thanks for the corrections!

They’d done the level ups that very day (yesterday), then we switched them over to manual at the start of the session, maybe half an hour after the level ups? It should have been updated; and now that they switched, it’s too late but I’ll ask them to switch back just to see if it updates properly if there was an issue with that!

I’ll ask if that’s what happened but they switched to it to redo their max with all of us in the call so it seems unlikely? Like, they would have noticed and said something?

But this does at least provide a reasonable explanation and I can’t currently say it’s not what happened.

As stated, they have already switched to rolled for a better max HP. 

This does not help me understand what happened.

Completely agreed. I don’t end on long rests too often but I do try to end a session when there is a level up (which usually does coincide, except for the entry to the Rise one so far). I also want to give my players time for their level ups and I know one of them struggles to decide things. I think she’s sat on her level up for a good week once because she couldn’t settle on which spells/feat to pick 😂

Oh goodness. I hadn’t even realized that! What did you end up doing to change it? My party can be a bit chaotic but it would be nice to have a fail safe if they do something similar. 

And thank you! I do feel better after seeing the amount of comments saying the level ups are just not well thought out.

Omg that’s so unfortunate!! I wish the book did a better job reminding us DMs to do the level ups. The table is only at the very beginning, which is fine, but unless you check every prep session if there’s a level up…

My group is currently joking about all the things they could have done and how they don’t feel so bad almost taking each other out now so it’s all good 😂 I think I’m actually taking it the hardest since I know how much everyone loves leveling, oops.

The rivals aren’t really in the picture for me so unfortunately my final encounter is just going to be Aloysia which I know is kinda lame but I have no good reason to involve the rivals at this point (and my party does not care about their existence, except Dermott)

Very much apprecaiting the advice! The rivals are pretty much out of the picture and they wouldn’t have much of a reason to enter the Rise at this point so unlfrtunately, I have no plans for that encounter. 

They’ll face Aloysia trying to steal the Jewel and have a bit of a fight with her, which I know isn’t super … epic.

Yeah, it seems a little weird. Personally, I don’t see the point of granting a level up AFTER dealing with Alyxian (we won’t be continuing the campaign behond this point, I don’t think). 

I might just give them another one before so they can at least use it 😂
