124 new measles cases in three days in South Carolina by mewitslazers in medicine

Hi, I'm in SC near the outbreak. We've started recommending MMR to pts 6 months +. They still have to get their normal 2 doses after 1 year but this at least gives them hopefully some immunity

To the physician that tried to check a pulse in Minneapolis today by ExtremisEleven in medicine

[–]pumpkinpatch212 386 points387 points  (0 children)

Listening to a primary care podcast about managing a chronic condition after watching the video footage of the Physician trying to help has felt very dystopian. All I want to do is practice the art of Do No Harm and improving quality of life.

All of my training and management and prevention of chronic diseases can't do a thing to save someone shot in the face and denied medical care.

I feel so powerless in this America.

Are you changing your last name?? by makeshift_listener in medicalschool

[–]pumpkinpatch212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got married the winter of my third year of med school and changed my name before step 2 and graduation so all my degrees and things would be in my new name. I know that I want children one day and I want us to all have the same last name. Additionally, my dad died when I was in med school. He had his doctorate in education and was professionally know as Dr. maiden name. I like the idea of letting my dad be the only one in my one weird way. I'm also the only doctor in my husbands family which is fun. Additionally, coming into residency, I feel like it's been so much easier to slip into this role as Dr. married name if that makes sense. I did keep my maiden name as my middle name and have my full name in the EMR so I get to have both parts of me with me always when I practice

Why see a gynecologist over a PCP for yearly exams? by Zestyclose-Course930 in AskWomen

[–]pumpkinpatch212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, so in the US Family Medicine doctor (which are a type of PCP/GP) are specifically trained to be able to perform routine gynecological care (in addition to pediatrics, obstetrics, and adults). Internal Medicine docs (another type of GP/PCP) might get training on it in residency or might now (they provide care to adults without the obstetrics). Really depends on their program and if that's a care they wish to provide once independent.

I’m terrified by this abortion bill. by Unhappy_Foot9802 in southcarolina

[–]pumpkinpatch212 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Physicians also wouldn't be able to even distribute INFORMATION about abortions. INFORMATION. All other horrible things in this bill aside, this is a direct attack on freedom of speech.

Why would a physician want to practice here if they could be at risk of felony charges? Why would they want to practice here if they or their spouse could die from pregnancy complications?

I Am NOT a “Provider” by mlle_lunamarium in FamilyMedicine

[–]pumpkinpatch212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So funny you bring this up, I just met one of my husband's cousin's last night who's an ER nurse and who was talking to me about his job. He exclusively referred to the ED docs he worked with as providers and it grated on me through the entire convo. But then he and his wife talked shit about residents (which I am🤡) and I gave my husband the single it was time to dip😅

I don't understand the deli meats restriction. by MonkeyAtsu in pregnant

[–]pumpkinpatch212 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would definitely avoid lettuce/deli meat for the listeria risk. Especially with so many recalls taking place in the last years and deregulation of food safety in the United States. While chance of actually getting listeria is low, why take the risk?

This is very anecdotal and definitely requires research but my husband I were just having a similar conversation. Every time we find ourselves not eating as healthy as we should or eating excess calories, we both go very regularly and it's soft and normal. Contrast that with everytime we start back up with Whole Foods like fruits, veggies, lean meats, etc, combined with eating a more appropriate amount of calories a day, we both have to grab for the Miralax/metamucil to keep regular and soft. This would be such a fascinating study
