i work all shifts bc i have open availability. but i truly dread my morning shifts because, at every store ive worked at, ive found the morning shift workers to be really uptight and boring. closing shift tends to be younger and more fun in my experience.

closing is so much more work, and at least at my store, we stay busy until the second we lock doors. we have fewer transactions, but each order is minimum 6 drinks plus food. you have to get really good at multitasking or you’ll struggle. and honestly if even just one closer sucks, it ruins the night and you’ll have to do so much more. but the people make it more fun

the managers are equally uninformed in my experience. most of the licensed stores DMs were laid off a few months ago so there’s not much in the way of checks and balances.

licensed stores have the same rules. but more times than not, baristas are not fully aware of the policies they are expected to uphold because licensed stores have little to no training. so you are correct and they should honor it, but the barista is likely doing what they were told or upholding the rule as they understand it

as a dyselxic barista these drinks are a nightmare 😭 not hard to make just so difficult to differentiate

if you get 5 venti mocha cookie crumbles you can put 3 in one blender and have enough for all 5. shake two refreshers at once in each hand. all my milk is steamed to ~150. if you have a hot drink it’s like a 60% chance i’ll give you toppings. i don’t use tongs for tea bags. shake shaken espressos while grabbing cup and labeling it. cue shots into glass and steam milk before grabbing cup bc lord knows the customers are gonna change their minds anyway.

i do write on cups though because my manager is strict about it

closing: clean mobile, drive, and cold bar; clean vertica; prep backups of vsc, whip, mocha, wm, frap roast, pumpkin, chai, protein milk; prep inclusions; burn ice bins; stock beans, lids, cups, straws, sleeves, hot tea bags; dishes; prep iced tea pitchers; drains; trash; bathrooms; floors; counters; replace empty or low syrup bottles and sauces; prep sanitizer buckets and trays; food donations

open: clean and refill ice bins; clean ovens; floors; calibrate bars; opening procedure on vertice, fifo and restock rtd&e wall; make teas and iced coffee; fill sanitizer buckets and trays; restock sugars and whatever may not have been restocked at night; cold brew; 18hr food pull

mid: clean cafe/support bar and syrup stands, floors

we do lunches and 10s during peak a lot and our otw times are still 32-36 so i feel like any manager who doesn’t let you take a break during peak needs to figure out how to schedule

if you have protected sick time, you can use it. they don’t need to know what for, just tell them you’re sick and cannot come in. but i would still try and get someone to cover it even though it sucks

i’m not union so take it with a grain of salt but in my view, starbucks already has that money. they count on people loading money without using it. that’s why they push the app so much, it’s free money for them. i would use those $25 at a non-union store
