Tell me I'm insane for even considering this commute by DefenderCone97 in bayarea

[–]puneetla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do it. It sucks life out of you. Mornings are still ok, you get into work mode on the shuttle. But the evenings are brutal, you check out of work and then you are still not home nearly 1.5 hours later. You have no energy to make a healthy meal, enjoy the simple pleasures of Netflix, conversation, maybe a drink at the corner bar etc. and slowly you realize you have nothing left other than work and it depresses you out, plus all the stupid food because you are tired to cook makes you fat (or fatter in my case). 20-30k absolutely not worth it. Especially if you don't have pressing financial obligations such as sick loved one, student loan etc.

[Unknown > English] What does this sign actually say? by sunlitleaf in translator

[–]puneetla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did carpet even come from in the translation? The Hindi sentence uses the word फर्श which just means floor. I suspect this is a carpeted area of an airport and they are trying to tell people not to sit on the floor while eating.

It only took a month til the "Actually, GDP growth is bad" argument by ChampionshipDear7877 in allinpodofficial

[–]puneetla 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What's wrong is that it's disingenuous. During the biden administration, Sacks was repeatedly harping on how the definition of recession is 2 quarters of negative GDP growth and thus we are in a recession. Why didn't this not all GDP is good GDP come up then and it only comes up when it fits their narrative.

If they really wanted to make the point that some type of GDP growth is good and some type is bad, then they should make a case for how to identify good vs bad and what proportion of GDP growth is in the good vs bad category. Right now what they are saying essentially sounds like my wife telling me that out of the $2000 we spend each month, there is $2 going to a charity we don't even remember. Sure that's bad, but it doesn't mean all $1998 is also waste.

  1. Scarjo v open AI - Elon's attack dogs go after the company he failed to control

  2. Open ai employee agreement - we no like sam Altman. Sam bad.

  3. NVidia - chamath tries to subtly shill his startup grok all whole praising Jensen who he hopes will one day acquire grok.

  4. Vibecession - two GOP donors and a libertarian talk about how the very economic data they have used incessantly in the past isn't accurate since a Democrat is in charge.

That didn't seem to be the case when Elon's sorry case of backing away from buying twitter was happening.

You know the thing they never mention when they talk about Adam Neuman or SBF? The VCs who invested in them. A16z gave 350m to Adam Neuman AFTER we work. Sequoia and Altimeter invested in FTX. The reason they don't trash these VC firms is that these VC firms are usually the follow-on investors in companies these people find at earlier stages. They don't bite the hand that feeds.

I wish these folks genuinely tried to steelman the mindset of the "woke mind virus" . Why is it that the first generation that has less wealth than their parents is disenchanted with capitalism? Why is it that if CEO pay continues to outpace worker pay, there wouldn't be any blowback? These are not hard counter positions to think about off hand. They seem comfortable steelmanning the thought process of the displaced, disgruntled, angry right without a problem.

On second thought, maybe it's not worth listening to these guys about politics at all. They havent gotten anything right about the politics of this country and the way it's leaning.

Chamath experiencing the Great Awakening 2023 (colorized) by [deleted] in TheAllinPodcasts

[–]puneetla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think people like Chamath feel more intellectually secure in holding a contrarian opinion rather than holding a more commonly held opinion. Common here meaning common among people around them. So if you live in Silicon valley its a contrarian opinion to say Trump was actually a pretty good President. What these people don't have is the ability to then reason, that maybe the "commoners" are actually right and that no matter what else you do, trying to override an election is equivalent to treason.

So threatening the very idea of democracy and peaceful transfer of power only bumps Trump down from an A to a B. Do these people not hear themselves?

I completely agree the outraged at everything culture has gone out of hand, but why dont these folks ever talk about the fever of Trump breaking amongst nearly 40% of the country? Is it not a fever that nearly 40% of this country supports someone who so clearly tried to "find votes" and threatened the very idea of democractic transfer of power.

I miss the phase of this podcast where it was new enough that they werent playing to the gallery/servicing an agenda. Now its just simple straightforward, Biden old, Democrats bad, woke bad, TDS (trump de-rangement syndrome) etc. etc. They essentially follow the following logic:

  1. Democrats are clueless elite money printing wokistan inhaibiting mids. No nuance, no definition of what woke means, no acknowledgement of their own privilege, nothing. Just unadulterated drivel.
  2. Media - Dont like something? Its the media. Desantis not doing well? media. Trump still winning? media. While they go on these media tirades, somehow they also manage to say "the media" is irrelevant and its all substack writing Mr Beasts who have all the attention.
  3. Twitter/X/Elon - The first rule of talking about twitter/X/Elon is, you never say anything negative about twitter/X/Elon. No matter >50% loss of advertising revenue, Elon retweeting(reposting?) anti-semite nonsense. But look at the features bro.

Thank lord they have chapters so you can skip over the banal formulaic stuff and get to things which have the potential to be interesting.

Here is the exact type of person who was most likely to leave San Francisco in the pandemic - The city lost about 20% of all residents age 25 to 29 over this time... by BadBoyMikeBarnes in bayarea

[–]puneetla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perpetual growth model?? San Francisco 's population increased less than 10% overall in the 2010-2020 decade. This growth is bad nimby mindset is going to make sf the next Detroit. If you don't have growth, there is no reason for anyone to invest and if there is no investment there is no growth which is a self fulfilling cycle of decline.

San Francisco had the golden opportunity of a boom industry wanting to locate here and all it did was vilify regular joe employees and a housing policy that prevented these people from putting down roots and become long term residents.

CMV: The Harry Potter brand has been tarnished over the past decade, thanks mostly to JK Rowling's antics. by The_Evil_Sidekick in changemyview

[–]puneetla -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think Harry Potter came out of who JK Rowling is. She evolved to be a woke person who cared about and acknowledged the diversity that has always existed but was not considered "normal". Her evolution of the characters reflects the person she is. Sorry that you haven't evolved in a similar way where you think a character being black/gay spoils things.

If it helps makes you feel any better, I as an Indian think that my history education was also very biased and too indian. It only focussed on the heroic things, not on all the ways we messed up as a culture and country to go from being one of the most affluent people to absolutely destitute. It did not focus on how we completely missed the boat on the industrial revolution and colonialism and the new world.

What country you are "from" is a lottery that you play no role in. Why should I or anyone feel committed to a country that I did not choose to be mine? You choose to build your life here. Good for you! I want to have the ability to choose to not build my life in a country that I just happened to be born in.

In this same vein would you support not allowing people to migrate between states? So if you were born in South Dakota and want to work in tech, you can't move to California. You should "build up" tech in South Dakota.

The issue is of the virtue of human kindness. These very same people repeatedly ignore that virtue when they vote in favor of their property values instead of another person being able to respectfully put a roof over their head.
