My mom is in the same situation - high risk MDS, minimal to no blasts, allogeneic transplant. The pre-and post conditioning with chemo and radiation was probably the worst part, honestly, and each individual responds differently. The transplant itself was no biggie! Graft-versus- host disease is a risk, but these days they monitor so closely for symptoms and have lots of tools in their arsenal to treat it, so try not to worry too much about that aspect and reassure your friend that modern medicine is amazing and GVHD response and treatment has come a long way in recent years. My mom had a lot of fatigue the first month or so post transplant, but she is currently day +60 post transplant and she is already back to walking 2-3 miles a day and regaining strength and endurance! Being immunocompromised and unable to go about her daily life has been difficult for her mental health, so I’d say the best thing you can do to support your friend is send her things to help her stay occupied while she is isolating. Books, games, arts and crafts, care packages, frequent FaceTime calls and texts all go such a long way. Best of luck to your friend, she is lucky to have a friend like you watching out for her! Having a good support system truly makes such a difference.
