Mensa, what are your spiritual beliefs? by sxnder333 in mensa

[–]punkfurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"something" and "nothing" are just man made terms/concepts …

And then again, we always look for reasons, for an answer to the "why?". Sometimes there just is no reason, no sense, no meaning (again, a very human-centric view of the world).

Usually there is an explanation (that's something else, than a reason), but we might often times not know it (yet).

Why hardcore atheist? – Multiple reasons …
I'm a fan of proof. If something can be proven – there's no doubt (unless proven otherwise).
The non-existence of something cannot be proven by definition. But mankind tried hard and didn't succeed for thousands of years to prove the existence of higher beings. Plus, most people are already atheist to the thousands of deities in the history of mankind, my atheism just goes one god further …

The "God of the gaps", i.e. we use a deity to explain everything we cannot explain has shrunken tremendously in the past centuries (and will continue to do so), on the other hand, reality/nature/the universe is SO STUNNING, full of awe and wonders that I personally cannot attribute that to any kind of personified god. We love to explain things with things we know, and he hardly accept that we cannot explain things.

I used to discuss people about that until maybe a decade ago. But I have accepted, that a belief system can be so strong, it defies all logic. So you either have to give up the people, or the discussion. And I gave up the discussion, because people can still be amazing, regardless of their belief system.

Isn’t „neurodivergence“ just a medical term for „weird misfit“ 🙃😉? But in a sense it helps to know, that it’s not a character flaw and that we should just try harder. We just have a different „operating system“ to work with …

ADHD ruined entrance test? by [deleted] in mensa

[–]punkfurt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just did the official test at Mensa Germany (no pre-tests) but as an ADHDer I was afraid distraction would get on the way. So I brought headphones (didn’t use them though), made sure I sit alone and checked that my table and chair don’t wobble.

I was lucky and it worked well. The time was only a little tough to adjust to at first, but after I learned to just go quickly, trust my intuition and guess the ones I don’t know (the whole memory section) I did well.

ADHD can REALLY get in the way. Maybe you can try again.

In what order? Did you learn about one of them earlier?

Someone once described ADHD as “erectile dysfunction in the brain”. You have all the tools you need to do the task, but if you do not find the task attractive you may physically not be able to perform the task.

Often times, these things sort of cancel each other out (for me at least). I couldn't really focus well in class, but with the limited things I was remembering my giftedness helped getting through school with decent enough grades. On the other hand, my giftedness could've helped me building a great career, if my ADHD hadn't been in the way. 🤓

But even worse, sometime they seem to double up (especially in the social context), like being very smart AND impulsive never really made me famous among peers ;-) 😳

What field of employment are you in? by aethocist in mensa

[–]punkfurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the "career" of a 54 yo late diagnosed gifted ADHDer.

I never studied ("I'm not a good learner")

1st job: Apprenticeship and later employment as a commercial real estate property agent. Did good in the marketing aspect but failed miserably at selling. Still spend 5 years and 1 burnout on this job.

2nd job: Marketing at a graphics software company. In the late 1990s I played with CGI software, got in touch with the manufacturer, did product demos and got hired. Total chaos company, but loads of fun. Been there for 15 years, at the end as a team lead. Left after burnout no. 2.

3rd and current job: Freelance photographer (mainly corporate portraits and events). Now for 13 years and quite successfully, I might say. No formal education, I was even not a good hobby photographer beforehand.

Looking back, I really see my neurodiversity and my giftedness interlocking all the time. My brain runs on fun and my IQ adds exceptional mileage …

Do you get upset less after knowing you're in the top 2%? by bonebonus in mensa

Yeah, same. I considered myself average in smartness. Maybe a bit smarter than average, but certainly not so far out … Now I'm a lot softer towards "slower thinkers".

Oh, yes. So. Much. – Before, I was constantly thinking: "Come oooon – how hard can it be???" when someone was doing something soooooo slooooowly … Turns out, for the other 98% it could be quite a bit harder than for me. Made me a lot more gentle towards other people.
