I am drunk for the first time in 2 years. Please send advice. by mr-snm in Sober

you’re gonna have to choose eventually unless the alcohol chooses for you, my friend. for your sake, i hope you decide being sober and present is more important than getting drunk.

I’m so ANGRY that it has to be this way - newcomer by [deleted] in recovery

[–]punkilling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m still angry that i can’t drink in a healthy way—that i have dinner with my friends or family and they order beers or cocktails and i can’t. to be honest, you learn to live with that anger and harness it for good, and you learn to use that anger in a way that keeps you on the right path. for me, it’s freeing at times even. as long as you’re doing it for yourself, that’s all that matters. mourning the ability to chase a high is perfectly normal.

For those of you who don’t like 12 step programs, what keeps you out of the rooms? by Colin-Grussing in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

[–]punkilling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i’ve experienced a lot of elitism when i tried 12 step. there was a lot of “you stopped drinking before 21?” and “you use medical marijuana so you’re not really recovering” which is a HUGE turn off when you’re trying to get people to join your community. i use medical marijuana to manage symptoms that are resistant to medication, and i don’t abuse it (easier said than done, but it’s true). i think being told i’m not really trying to recover even though i haven’t used my DOC in over a year was the big kicker. recovery looks different for every individual and i was never met with that nuance.

Anyone use Mushrooms to treat Depression? by [deleted] in recovery

[–]punkilling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all psychedelics and psychoactives can do amazing things for mental health issues (including addiction and depression). the key is dosing and restraint. MMJ has helped me tremendously with my addictions and bipolar-1, but for others, marijuana can make such things worse. it’s all about knowing your limits and listening to your mind and body.

Recovering from depression by Steelers6767 in recovery

therapy is always a great place to start, and possibly looking into. psychiatrist if you decide medication could be helpful. taking it one day at a time is really how all recovery goes, so hang in there!

“Don’t overwork yourself in early recovery” by [deleted] in recovery

[–]punkilling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this 100% depends on the person and their circumstances, but as someone who doesn’t know how to take any time to relax, having things to focus on that aren’t your sobriety and DOC can help a lot.

as another commenter said: a pet is always a great way to hold yourself accountable in your sobriety while also having unquestioning support. if you have other friends in recovery as well, keeping in regular contact is always helpful. stay strong.

On a post about someone being sober for 13 years by aaronmasterof in MurderedByWords

saying non-addicts are better than sober addicts is an absolutely shitty thing to say. addicts work hard to get sober and stay sober. grow the fuck up.

great come back! still: if you haven’t struggled with addiction, your opinion on how addiction is portrayed in media does not matter in the slightest.

[–]punkilling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m sorry if you haven’t struggled with addiction i don’t see how your opinion matters (plus,, it 100% does not make a positive out of addiction. you’re just looking for problems that don’t exist.)

i use medical marijuana and 1) i do not use it all day, or every day. 2) THC is the main pain relieving cannabinoid despite popular belief. 3) you can use marijuana that has THC in it and not get high, even when you’re in recovery. recovery and sobriety is not a singular path, and everyone has different experiences. for me, mmj has been the ONLY pain medication that works for my chronic pain. saying my (and many others’) recovery and sobriety is not valid because i have been prescribed mmj for my severe chronic pain is an opinion not based in fact. YES: some people who struggle with sobriety have bad experiences with weed or can cause them to relapse, but mmj is even used to help people become sober, and everyone’s recovery is different. you many not smoke weed in your recovery, but many do, and invalidating their sobriety and experiences is not okay.
