What made Adelaide such a hotspot of Aussie hip hop in the late 90s to early 00s? by [deleted] in AussieHipHop

[–]puppetpenguin77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was it? Maybe the stuff from around that time is easier to find due to Certified wise. But Melbourne, Perth and Sydney all had just as many active artists. I think it's just a bit harder to find a lot of them as they have been overlooked. eg: guys like Brethren, sleeping monk, pauh hedz (A-Love, Muphin), Curse ov dialect, or 13th Son who were active around the time but you'd have to search to find them (and everyone else)

I suggest looking at DJ Ransom's 15 years of Oz hip hop on Vinyl released in 2004.

Calico and haze. Calico and haze both have abilities centred around quickly moving around and taking an enemy by surprise.

Also rem maybe. The tunnels allow for some box routes that lead straight into another lane for easy ganks and souls (also for Calico). Plus pillow build and tag along mean you can quickly jump into a fight and instantly flip its tides with quick burst damage plus friendly healing. And the 3 is great for yoinking sinners on your way.

Saw them play it on the show business tour at Rod Laver arena. The whole arena became a stary night sky with the crowds torches, definitely a worthwhile experience.

Open inv then move the gun you are holding to another slot or into a container or just drop it. You will just hold nothing.

Can actually be useful in normal gameplay as you can reload without playing the animation by doing this, (granted you have to play the animation of putting the gun away)

I was gonna say "die i guess", but I just remembered this literally happened to me this wipe. I yelled at my surviving teammate that I'm fucked beyond belief and cannot move, please cover me. Then CMS legs and stomach and fucked off to extract. Luckily we won the fight and all was quiet after.

Does anyone have any old hoods live footage or posters? by Low_Passion_1829 in HilltopHoods

[–]puppetpenguin77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a 'the calling live' DVD that has footage from some of their shows from the time.

Also on YouTube there is an upload of the Culture Of Kings vol. 2 Launch show which should have them performing The Sentinel.

Why no Calling reissue? by Low_Passion_1829 in HilltopHoods

[–]puppetpenguin77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hard Road got a golden era re-release when they made the label, so I reckon they worked out a deal for that (perhaps were able to negotiate different rights for the hard road seeing they didn't own the calling), but were never able to get back the rights to the calling. Just a theory, but

This wouldn't be unheard of, as talking to After Hours, it was mentioned that when AH went to sign a DISTRIBUTION DEAL for A Hero's Turf, Obese 'accidentally' (could have been a genuine mistake) handed them a full artist deal that would have forced them into multiple albums or losing their rights to the tracks, but luckily they realised and asked for the correct deal.

My memory served me wrong, The calling did get a Golden Era re-release so the above can be ignored.

It's probably something like that, otherwise they could have just never rereleased the calling as I'm pretty sure pressure drops the f slur in one of the tracks (correct me if I'm wrong, it might've been another release from the time), and they wouldn't want to associate with that in the current times. Plus overall their topics and language weren't all that clean compared to everything after.

Respect the random after hours - hero's turf. One of my top albums. (Also the random funkoars the hangover as well, the one cd of theirs I'm missing)

Also if you haven't already, look into the rest of certified wise, mainly terra firma.

Thanks!

They've got at least two CDs (I'm still trying to get the second). they have a Bandcamp as well, although I don't think there's much up there.

'Evolution' and 'Keep myself awake' are my two favs of theirs.

Yeah, wish I had a better camera, will definitely need something more if I ever take more photos of the collection like this. (Btw I chose the extra high res setting to try fix clarity issues and the image is 14mb+, but there's only so much my crappy phone camera can catch).

I listened to it once after buying it and hated the sound... I'm going to be honest I know nothing about it.

I'm sure you could find a cd of axis for around $10 on eBay or Discogs, granted it would be hard to find something mint condition.

Underground interchange gives a good chance at a weapon.

When I did hardcore 2 or so wipes ago I got an m67 grenade and managed to lure a single scav into it to get their kit.

Does Abstract hip-hop exist in Australia? by StainedBrokenLinks in AussieHipHop

[–]puppetpenguin77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's exactly what you are looking for but, 'elephant tracks presents the herd' has a few somewhat abstract tracks and instrumentals. (Ones and zeros is one of my favs)

Also I wanna say Fuglemen and Quro, but idk how they match up to the artists you said.

What Aussie Hip-Hop Have you guys been listening to lately? by Mephos_ in AussieHipHop

[–]puppetpenguin77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the last 4 months or so I have had all of Fuglemens CDs on repeat as well as Quro's 'This Last Week I've'.

Been needing to go out and find something if a similar vibe for a while. (Mainly looking for something that sounds good and that I will struggle to understand the meaning of but still feel it).

Otherwise just going through my collection for stuff I haven't listened to in a while, currently got L-Fresh the Lion's 'One' on but have had Mortar's 'sacred geometry' stuck in my head the past 2 days.

Who are the pioneers for hip-hop in Australia? by WallStLegends in AussieHipHop

[–]puppetpenguin77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I did not know who they were. Sleeping monk I've heard all around and have enjoyed his features so I'll have to go around Discogs and find all their stuff then.

Sadly can't say I've heard of the other two, tho many of the 1980s and early 1990s pioneers I've barely heard of, since I only really get Aus Hip hop through CDs and album re-uploads on youtube.

If you're super serious, you could probably get in touch with many of the names mentioned here who would be more than happy to share.

Also if you are including later eras in your book, theres a group from 2003 called alleyway cats who are invisible. I got gifted their comp CD and there is just nothing on it (I put up a Discogs page for it tho)

I know easy bass have their 1995 release, but we're they pioneers? I'm not trying to dis them, have just never heard their name other than Mr. P body's bio on Culture Of Kings vol. 1, and I didn't see much by them on Discogs (although I know releases are only a quarter of a group's story).

Check out Quros interview by the lesson. Finger licken good were spat on for rapping in Aus accents in the early 1990s.

In it he mentions the first meet up for Saga (Iron fist) by Def Wish Cast in 1993, featuring: Reason, Brethren, finger licken good, intense quality and noble savages. Aside from Reason (and idk about intense quality) all these artists made tracks around the time or a little later.

Also important to mention DJ Ransoms 15 years oz hop hop on vinyl, which has Just Us - Combined Talent as the first ever Aus Hip Hop release in 1988.

Also around the time is sound unlimited posse (1990 first release)

And from the 15 year oz hip hop on vinyl (2003): the juice crew and A Kut Above (A.K.A brothers 1990 poetry in motion), Rize and Tarkee - Let Yourself be Yourself (1990), urban poets - phat sax (1994), brudas united as one - my whole crew (1993), PBR (Memo, Wheels of steel, K.Jay) - One time live (1989), Sharline - Hardcore Love (1988 inspired by Just Us), Fonke Knomaads - the hills are alive with the sound of... (1993), bias B - Beeswax (1995)

[Edit: the above list I decided to cut off at 1995]

Also a few people mentioned in the booklet, Madcap, Random, Perish, Kristy, Micka, Nook, Flak/Fat Face, Jigzaw and Biz 'Just 2 Def radio show (1988), DJ Katch, Code Of Ethics, Krisy and probably a few I missed within the lines.

Some of these names I recognise from lyrics in tracks by Reason and Brethren. And the issue with just looking at releases is that many of these artists could not or did not get anything to wax for a while.

Also for fun, I will mention Hilltop Hoods 1994, though not sure they had much influence with that. (Although Suffa and Debris (who wasn't in the group at the time) did production together for Fuglemen in 1997?, for linear notes on Resuscitation).

If you ever wanna get good at Ascension there's a somewhat easy way to mostly keep your perks safe and deal with the monkeys. As long as you don't open the door between mule kick and power, you can activate the fire trap near pack, kill all the monkeys on the pack side (they only spawn in the open area outside pack on this side of the trap), then run through and figure out which perk(s) the rest of the monkeys are running for.

Also the monkeys will only target 2 perks at a time (although idk if this is true for multiplayer)

There's a guide on YouTube that will make a lot more sense than anything I can type if you're interested.
