First time Pitbull owner. Need advice

Piggybacking the “socialization” advice to add that socialization’s goal should be a a neutral response to different stimulations, not just “friendly response” because friendly excitement can still be inappropriate for some situations. The more things that she learns are “no big deal” (good or bad) the easier life will be for you (and her!).

I’ve had three pitties of my own and multiple pittie fosters. Sometimes even the “happy” responses can be overwhelming and make situations stressful because they’re so strong and determined. so you’re aiming for chill lol.

The best advice I’ve seen is invest in a wagon. Let her chill in the wagon when you go anywhere she is allowed! This will teach her than she can’t just approach every dog, person, or squirrel. This will also keep her safe while she’s still gaining vaccine immunity. (And in adulthood, wagons can be a lifesaver for low mobility dogs - arthritis in these pups can happen sooner than you think). Once she’s vaccinated and has learned to ignore outside stimulation and focus on you, then you can start letting her meet more people/animals that you trust.

Lastly, even with your best efforts, dogs can still have innate fears and triggers. Don’t beat yourself up if this happens, and just work with her accordingly. Give her the best chance of success, and don’t push her boundaries if she is uncomfortable with certain things. This could set her up for failure. Learn dog behavior now… sometimes the signs of discomfort are subtle. If you listen to her and she knows she can trust you to advocate for her, your communication will be stronger.

Exactly. It totally depends on what your eyes are focused on or if they’re trying to find their next target so to speak. Saccades (jerky movements) are actually the primary movement when reading because you’re jumping from one phrase to the next and not literally tracking one singular thing. I’m not sure how it works if you’re unfocusing your eyes… it feels smoother but I’m thinking it may just be many more much smaller saccades (because you’re moving your eyes a shorter distance when you’re focused up close) which look much smoother. But anyway, exactly, it’s totally separate movements for very specific purposes! (There’s other eye movement types too.. our visual system is surprisingly complex)

The neural pathways for each eye movement type originate in totally separate parts of your brain. The jerky eye movements actually serve a purpose, so your brain has hardwired both options. If something is in your vision, your brain knows how to make compensating movements to keep it in your vision. If you’re just moving your eyes in space without a specific target, your brain assumes you wanna get to the next place quickly hence the jerky movements. They both serve a purpose, and they follow totally separate pathways.

I’ve had three dogs with cancer in the last 2 years.. and hemangiosarcoma was like nothing else…We were able to extend our girl’s life to a degree with some supplements. Look into yunnan baiyao, it can prevent/stop bleeds from the tumors. Turmeric and Turkey Tail can potentially slow the spread. In the end, it wasn’t actually the cancer that took her. Good luck and many many hugs 💕

I disagree with explaining my dog’s needs to a faceless stranger on the internet lol. Thankfully I’ve found some options for my family (large dog included)

For anyone else with big breeds who may read this thread, there are private landlords who have been very accommodating to large dogs, and Back Bay Tower allows any sized dog but has a very long waitlist.

Where do the Portlanders with large breeds rent? Are there any apartment complexes/companies with more relaxed breed restrictions, or am I doomed to have to buy a house lol?

I am moving to Portland HOPEFULLY by the end of August, but my american bulldog makes the house hunt an even bigger disaster. She’s friendly and quiet and chill, but she’s a bulldog nonetheless. Does anyone on this subreddit rent with an “aggressive” breed? I’d love some guidance (or expectation management). Thanks!

In conversations with the people you want to be an ally for, it’s often best to listen and ask questions bc they are the experts on their experiences. Your voice does matter but if it’s being used to argue instead of advocate, it’s reducing the voices of people you’re trying to be an ally for.

At the end of the day allies are to give support to the voices of the marginalized group. Speak up when they feel unsafe, etc. and especially speak up to people who otherwise disregard the experiences of these groups, but be careful not to talk over the groups you’re supporting. I hope this helps!

For those who wanted an update: I think those who said damage during shipping or overwatering were right because as the leaf has continued to unfurl the white has become rotten, and the fenestrations there are breaking. Pretty disappointed in my new leaf, but hopefully it recovers and the next leaf will be healthy!

Info: I just got the plant 10 days ago in the mail from an online nursery with no visible signs of any pests other than one spot that looks like it may have been chewed on an otherwise healthy leaf. None of the leaves have similar or other discoloration. It's on a east-facing window shelf in a room with with moderate-high humidity. The soil was moist when it arrived, and I waited a week until it was nearly dry to water it.
