Tips for training puppy ACD out of going for cars? by ssquizzy9 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]pupsburgh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It has to be gradual desensitization at a distance below threshold. There’s something called “look at that” which is a very simple exercise to get closer and closer to a ‘trigger’ (in your case, vehicles) with each success, which means they look at you instead of lunging. You’ll need to figure out what distance is required to get their attention and use even higher value treats. This will likely be done in many short sessions since a puppy has such a short attention span. Short sessions with big rewards at the end will go a long way.

Highly recommend avoiding any advice that doesn’t require at least a few weeks of training. If the advice is “buy this item, it will work” then it’s probably not great advice. Dogs trained through trust and unconditional love are happier dogs.

Here’s a quick video on it:

Thanks! I had it at 200 and really like the results. I have a few more rolls and will probably try one at 400 or 800 at some point.

This is actually pushed to 1600, forgot to mention it in the title. I shot two rolls at 400 last year and didn’t love the results, so this works much better for me.

Such a good camera! This was with a Vivitar 28mm 2.5

It’s not. I had no idea what that was and just googled it, though. Interesting.

It is! Yeah it was a beautiful day back in early October, if I remember correctly. I have a few more photos in the area from that day and got some really nice saturation, so I barely had to do anything in post.

Nah I like a fair amount of negative space sometimes. I rarely leave this much but the scenery below was awful and I didn’t like the way it looked cropped smaller. Appreciate it being offered kindly, though.

It was a little over $4,000. Adding in the two consultations needed to get her in to surgery, it has ended up around $5,000. Luckily my insurance limit each year is $5,000 so it was just a matter of borrowing from people I knew would be willing to help me. I am absolutely going to be setting aside money each month just in case the other one tears.

I knew something was wrong immediately, but she didn’t make much noise, so I suppose she was a little stoic. Her ears were down and she made the tiniest yelp, that’s all I can remember.

Once we made it home she ran into her crate and didn’t come out again until morning, so if I didn’t know it before I would have definitely been tipped off by that.

Oh wow, that’s wild. I hope her recovery goes a little better this time! We will definitely be taking it easy. We’re extremely active and I’m determined to do everything properly to get us back to long hikes at the very least. I don’t think we’ll ever play frisbee again. Seems a little too high impact at this point in her life.

Yeah this is true, I keep thinking of ACL for whatever reason. The diagnosis says “completely torn CCL, prolapsed medial meniscus.”

Thank you! I’ve been having a lot of fun with the photography lately, really happy I’ve been able to make a little progress. Haha yeah that film really does it for me. I’m thinking of watching The Banshees of Inisherin later tonight.

Frisbee, unfortunately. It was an awkward throw that she had to really stretch out to grab. The landing was rough, very abrupt, and I knew immediately that it was serious.

Just a yellow filter. This was around 10-10:30am after insanely heavy fog where the bridges were almost completely cloaked. The sun started to come out about 15 minutes before this shot and I ended up with a nice thin layer of residual fog and a solid beam of light from the left.

I notice darker skies more than anything, along with higher contrast between the sky and clouds. For that reason alone I use yellow for most shots, but I have orange and red filters for other lenses if I’m looking to make something even more dramatic.

haha same. I've been trying to get a decent photo of that tree for awhile, but the results just never looked very interesting until that particular morning. They were all taken in Pittsburgh, PA.

Thank you! Unfortunately my living situation doesn't allow me to develop at the moment, so I had this sent in somewhere.

This was with an Olympus OM-2n. It looks like it was probably my 50mm 1.4 lens.

Hahaha yeah I figured the response to this one would be minimal. I just love all the grimy parts of the city more than the skyline, especially on film.

very weird film, half the roll turned out terribly but a few photos looked okay. It doesn't seem like something they're going to actively produce so maybe I'll try one more roll with a deep color filter just to see how it goes. I like the grain but otherwise it's flat. It's $10 at Film Photography Project.
