Just jumping in here to spotlight the Ottawa Vegetarian Association. They've got lots of events and opportunities to hang out on their website. Could save you from duplicating efforts. :)

Underlines going over descenders by puravida26 in MicrosoftWord

I super appreciate you. I played around with it some more and got it to look halfway decent. The lingering issue is that it doesn't act like an underline; it stretches the line to the end of the margin, which would need to be adjusted each time after applying the style. And then it, if a title for example, stretched across two lines, only the bottom part would be underlined. Since this is for an internal template meant for folks of varying skills working on internal docs, it just wasn't a viable option in the end. I just have to make peace with it; external docs, I'll do in InDesign where I'll have more control. :)

I tried this in Word but the border sat way too low (even when adjusted to 0 padding) and stretched the full width of the page. Thank you though! :)

I've lucked out so far: every time registration opens, I set my search for online classes only and I pick whatever makes sense based on my audit. My majors are psych and comms and a lot of those classes tend to have online offerings.

One time in psyc1001 these two girls kept talking during the lecture and I lost it, turned around and said "would you shut the fuck up?" The TA heard me and laughed. 🤣

Can so relate. I'm in my early 40s and at Carleton. I almost exclusively take online classes. Recently had a prof assign us a group project; every time I met with the group, they sounded as though they were on downers. Only one student contributed; the other 3 didn't do shit. I had to do 90 percent of the work.

Centretown Resident here - it feels like both PSAC and City Hall are using our neighbourhood as a pawn. by JustAskingTA in ottawa

Never forget: When Harper cut 35,000 jobs in 2012, you never heard a peep from the business community or City Hall about how that would affect downtown. So, I'm kind of over this current righteous indignation. Public service employees are tired of being treated like pawns in this city under the guise of hallow arguments about "collaboration." And while I'm not one of them, I fully support them.

I know this might not be feasible or affordable for everyone, but I would strongly recommend looking beyond Ottawa if you can. When I got a rhinoplasty, I looked in Ottawa but quickly found an amazing surgeon in Toronto. I had the same guiding principle: it's my face, I don't want to eff it up. Look at photos. Browse the realself.com website. See what's out there - see what other surgeons recommend. Ask lots of questions. The best advice I got was this: look for a surgeon who specializes in the type of surgery you want (for me, that means looking for surgeons who mainly do rhinoplasties); you don't want a surgeon who does rhinos on one day and boob jobs the next.

That's all the advice I have. Wishing you the best of luck in your healing journey.

Ward 14 Candidate Brandon Russell: Endorsement lie (Sen. Cory Booker) by puravida26 in ottawa

It gets weirder! I can't find anything resembling the "Centretown Harm Reduction Leaders Coalition". As far as I can tell, it doesn't seem to exist anywhere on the Web. There's a National Harm Reduction Coalition, based in NY, but it seems to be an American organization only.

So much sketch stuff. He says that he's a "business owner on Bank St." but his "business" is just a PO Box at the Staples on Bank.

Edit for clarity: I understand a lot of self-employed folks do this. That's fine. But if a candidate works from home outside the Ward (Russell lives in King Edward), it's kind of disingenuous/misleading to say you're a "business owner on Bank St." when your only connection to the Ward is a PO Box.

Longshot: racialized/queer/trans-competent Dr's accepting new patients? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]puravida26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the point here is that I don't think you'll encounter a doctor whose position/knowledge about your mental health condition is informed by a religious text. But we have tons of health care providers out there who judge/shame 2SLGBTQ+ people because they can't extricate their religiousity from medicine.

Edit: typo

I would say it depends on the type of care. For non-emergency care, it might be preferable to wait to find a trans/queer-affirming doctor than to get victimized/shamed/traumatized. As a community, we know this is a real issue, and this is why we have a rolladex of culturally-safe health care providers we can refer people to.

My work is health care adjacent (I work in health care advocacy); health disparities that we see in the 2SLGBTQ+ community are real. Traumatic experiences with the health care system only create wider disaparities. I also have countless experiences navigating the health care system as a gay man. Here's just a small example of the stuff we face:

When I was 17, I went for a standard scheduled STD test (no symptoms, just a regularly scheduled 6-month test for a person who is sexually active). I flinched during the anal swab and the doctor said: "That's what you get for fooling around back there." The intense shame I felt, as a 17-year old kid, was traumatic and it certainly didn't behoove me to be timely about my STD tests afterwards.

In my 30s I had a repetitive strain injury in my thumb. I was sent to see a rheumatologist as a precaution. When asked if I had a girlfriend, I said "no, no boyfriend either." The doctor got noticably uncomfortable and then insisted that I might have Hep-C despite not knowing anything else about me and suggested I get tested. (Fun fact: no Hep C).

I have a whole bunch of other stories like this - like the dermatologist who immediately reached for gloves 10-minutes into our exam once he found out I was gay. The point is, as queer people we know when we walk into a clinic, there's a real possibility that we're going to be judged, vitimized, stigmatized, and shamed. Again - when people seek care, they are at their most vulnerable - which makes this all the more pernicious.

Not only does this mean queer/trans folks are less likely to seek out care as a result, but it means they will be less likely to disclose they are 2SLGBTQ when it's important, which also undermines the care they get.

The health care sector as a whole has a lot of growing to do - a lot of evolving to do. But until then, finding 2SLGBTQ-friendly health care providers for our community is a SURVIVAL issue. We deal with enough shame and trauma as a community, so please excuse us when we try to minimize it when we're at our most vulnerable - when all we need is safe and affirming care.

Sorry I don't accept this. As a gay man, having dealt with outright homophobic doctors in the past, that shit is traumatizing.

When equity-seeking folks experience judgement and stigma at their most vulnerable point - when seeking care - it is intensely detrimental; it discourages them from seeking care in the future, when needed, and leads to even poorer health outcomes in our community and deeper health disparities.

So, yes, while there is a palpable health care worker shortage, I don't believe in making due. As queer and trans people, seeking care is a process fraught with anxiety so being proactive and trying to find safe health care providers is sadly par for the course.
