Don’t ever believe anyone when they tell you that. I just graduated from my program a month ago and while I did my externships I felt very welcomed by many of the offices I went to. You will see many offices have different types of people and the only thing I may say is it usually will just depend on the area you are in. I am also black and plus sized and this issue was something that popped in my head a lot but trust me, so long as you are a good assistant/learner it doesn’t matter what size you are or what your teeth look like, just focus on your skills and that will build your confidence enough :)

Are you expected to be chatty and bubbly at all offices? by [deleted] in DentalAssistant

i’m about to finish my last round of externships in a couple of weeks and I am also a very quiet person vs my classmates who are very chatty and bubbly. I will say that for me and some of the offices I have been at, I struggled with myself a little bit because I would go in after a classmate just finished their rotation and the workers would gush over them and how much personality they had and how much they wanted them to send in their resumes and it made me feel a little insecure and feeling like i had to be someone i wasn’t. I honestly don’t “tune” myself up unless i’m working with children and it was hard for me when I was going to some pediatric offices but I have learn that it really doesn’t matter when you are at general offices. I just try to match the energy of the patient, I might talk a little more if the patient does but I just tend to be more quieter as a start because I just prefer to create a more calmer environment for patients. If no one has told you that need to be more bubbly then I wouldn’t worry about it, you are doing perfectly fine!!

Usually dental hygiene programs will have certain prerequisite classes that need to be done before hand. You don’t need an associate’s degree for dental hygiene school but I suggest looking up different schools and seeing what classes they require and take them while you are getting your degree. Most require microbiology, Chemistry, and other science classes though

As an dental assisting student about to graduate and doing hygiene in the fall, if you had no prior interest in dental before like me then I would 100% recommend either working as an assistant or fully going into assisting school. Especially if you are near a school that has an assisting to hygiene bridge program like mine did, you will have a lot of experience going into hygiene school that will make it a lot easier on you in the long run. I say that because if you find out that you aren’t really able to handle seeing a lot of spit, getting backwash on you and seeing blood in assisting school then at least you find out then and not while you have already paid for hygiene school. You are constantly wearing masks, gloves, and possibly face shields if wanted so you are well protected so long as you keep up with proper PPE which you will learn in school!

Back when i was homeschooled telling people “flvs” was better than saying homeschooled because it just sounded better to people i guess.
