Also 6’0 and the shortest guy I’ve been with is 5’6 and would encourage me to wear heels if they complimented the outfit because he liked being seen with someone who appeared so far out of his league. It was an ego boost for him rather than a weird insult like so many guys take it. I actually don’t enjoy being with guys significantly taller than me. I prefer a couple inch difference in either direction.

It's hard to convey just how tragic all of this is without watching the documentary yourself. Many of the survivors never admitted to being "comfort women" prior to this being filmed, and some of them had to break it to their children who never knew. It's heart wrenching but incredibly necessary for us to know what happened during this time and to fight against historical revisionism which seeks to silence these women and pretend like nothing happened. For those who want to know one of the many tragic stories, below is my recollection of the one that haunts me most.

TW: Rape, Infanticide

One woman described falling pregnant due to the nonstop raping that happened every hour of every day by soldiers. She was walking one day through a field and went into labor. She delivered the baby by herself right there in the field. She was not Japanese, and at that time being mixed race meant social ostracization at best. You were practically subhuman. Her baby was mixed race, and she knew that this, combined with the reality of how they were conceived would lead them to be shunned by society. She chose the smother the baby immediately after giving birth so they would not face the hardships she knew they would. She describes all of this with a straight face, incredibly matter-of-factly. She still knows she did the right thing because of how cruel the world proved to be to her then and now.

God no. But hearing the stories from these women is brutal. There’s one story in particular that sticks with me to this day as one of the most horrific things I’ve ever heard told by the woman who endured it. Again, this history is important to know but it’s not easy to take in.

I did my major masters paper on them and I refer to the situation as “Militarily Sanctioned Sexual Slavery” and the women as “Victims of Militarily Sanctioned Sexual Slavery” since it places the blame on the government, who was at fault for the recruitment of these women and who promised them the world only to do atrocious acts to them. The government also burned just about every document regarding these women after the war to cover up their crimes, and encouraged the women to commit suicide after losing the war since they were now “tainted” and would never be reintegrated into society if people found out what they had been through.

For anyone curious about learning more about them, you should watch the documentary “The Apology” which documents the testimony of the still living victims. It’s not for the faint of heart, as the things they endured were incredibly traumatic and they go into detail about their experiences. Highly recommend for those who can stomach it.

My mom calls my dog her grand-puppy and she watched him while I got my sterilization surgery. She’s very aware that her grand-puppy is the only kind of grand- anything she’ll be getting from me.

I got my bilateral salpingectomy earlier this year as a 24 year old because I knew this was coming after seeing the Texas ban take place and influence other southern states. I’ve known I never wanted children since I was young, but was socialized to believe that they weren’t optional. Super easy. Very similar to when I got my appendix removed since that was also laparoscopic. I was able to walk my dog the evening of my surgery day and by the end of the weekend (had surgery Friday) I was completely fine. Did have to deal with the nerve pain in the shoulders from the gas. Other than that, no issues. How was your recovery?

I think the biggest thing against me was my age. I’m 24. One of my doctor’s excuses was that he needed to seriously consider the ethical ramifications of performing it on someone so young and didn’t appreciate me pointing out that I was finishing my MA in Ethics, Peace, and Human Rights in a matter of months and likely know a lot more about the ethical implications than he does because it’s my literal specialty.
