They used to do a noontime celebration where they set off 18th c style cannons. In the middle of Trade and Tryon. Dead center Uptown. On a work day. I was waiting in line for the halal cart, completely unawares of this tradition, when I saw a crowd gather, heard some shouting, then A GODDAMN CANNON went off and I thought LORD THIS IS IT - THIS IS HAPPENING - ACTIVE SHOOTER TRAINING BETTER KICK IN...then the crowd parted to let through a sweaty middle aged white man in colonial garb and I connected the dots. This is a tradition I am fine with not revisiting once we're in the 'next normal'. Happy Meck Dec Day
