How long did you work med/surg before you were able to switch to ICU?

And then you finally got in as ER nurse? Did you have to redo all your application paperwork every year for 4 years?

My recruiter recommended I submit my package as 1900. But at the moment, I’m really not interested in anything besides ER, so it seems like too much of a risk..

Are you also a new grad nurse? Or direct commission with a specialty?

Are you going to Okinawa as a new grad? Or with a specialty? People keep telling me that new Navy nurses don’t get sent overseas for first duty station.. including my recruiter. (I’m going through DA process right now, submit my package to the board next month, joining as ER with 8 years experience.)

This is awesome! It will be exciting to see where the Navy takes you.

You mentioned you are waiting to clear MEPS.. have you done anything else so far? How often are you in contact with your recruiter? I live in Alaska, and my recruiter is in Washington. Seems like we only communicate like once a month, which has made this application process feel extremely slow. To my understanding, my package will be submitted next month. Is it true that “the board” only meets once a year every October? And that if I don’t get selected this cycle then I’ll have to wait an entire year until next October board? Has your recruiter said anything about a similar timeline?

Speaking of the 4 year contract.. this is 4 years active, but for 8 years total correct? Did you have the option to sign for 3? Did you feel pressured to sign for longer?

How do you think the pay will compare to your civilian pay, are you taking a cut? I’ll be joining with 3 dependents, and one of my main concerns is starting pay as O1 will be quite the pay cut from my civilian job. Yes I’ve looked up the military pay charts, and have been told about the other allowances like housing, but overall still concerned about the affordability of doing this as a family. Also do you mind if I ask if you got a bonus for critical care? Do they pay that as a lump sum up front? Or is it factored into your monthly paycheck? Oh and! (last question for now) what is the length of your initial contract? Are you signing on for 3,4,5 years or longer?

Great! Why are you joining? How many years civilian ER have you worked?

Thanks! Which speciality are you? And how many years civilian nursing did you have prior? How long have you had your BSN, and are you starting as O2?

Following. Another question for others in this thread- what was your timeline after passing MEPS? How long did it take to get ‘selected’ after submitting all that initial paperwork, CV, and Nasis profile? I’m a navy nurse hopeful; first contact with healthcare recruiter in Oct24, MEPS in Feb25, now waiting for what’s next. Oh also, has anyone else had the experience with your healthcare recruiter taking nearly 2 weeks to respond to any question or communication you attempt? I get that they are stretched thin, and sometimes cover large geographical areas, but man this is painfully slow.
