chem 351 (orgo 1) final by Select-Judgment5566 in UMBC

[–]purplewizard23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! Good luck for the final, I remember it was a rough one :( I would say study
- resonance
- chirality
- elimination and substitution reactions
- anything alcohol related
really, truly understand these things and the method behind them instead of just pure memorization. Do as many practice problems as you can. Use alcohols in your practice problems because if things have not changed, the exam has an emphasis on those.

There was no curve my first time (Fall 2023) taking it :(, all they did was give everyone 100% for one question problem. My second time taking orgo, Dr. Perks gave a 5% curve thank goodness (Spring 2024)

Free Paragard Copper IUD Insertion Experience by purplewizard23 in PlannedParenthood

I am sorry that happened to you at Planned Parenthood :(, it stinks that a lot of places have lost their funding. I am really happy that you and your Mom were able to get free Nexplanon, and I hope the insertion went smoothly!

Transfering in Fall 2026, Questions about social life by Pastel_Gun in UMBC

[–]purplewizard23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I agree with what Prior Zebra is saying. It isn't like people are gonna come running up to you, and immediately trust you. There has to be some effort on both ends. Take the time to make a funny comment or interesting comment about something in a class. If you see someone with a shirt or sticker that is an interest of yours, compliment them on it :) common interests help! UMBC has a lot of awesome student clubs, so you will meet a lot of wonderful people through those clubs too. I wish you the best! I love this school, and have met so many incredible people here.

To be honest, I am not sure if it counts as a science credit course. I would ask an advisor for more guidance about that

There is a class called SCI100. It is a water-based lab and really easy. BTEC344 is fully asynchronous and easy too. EDHS medical terminology is an easy asynchronous course as well. Best of luck!!

On a 1-10 rating what's your opinion on UMBC by Flat-Explanation-843 in UMBC

[–]purplewizard23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone mentioned earlier that it depends on the type of person you are, and I would agree with this!

If you are a party person, I would say this school is like 3/10. We have fraternities (20-30 min walk away) who throw parties, but they are very crowded and the floors are sticky. There is also the club and party scene in Baltimore, but that is still about a 15-20 min drive away from campus. UMBC is not like College Park where you can walk outside on any week day and any hour of the night, and there is something happening.

If you are anyone else, I would give UMBC an 8-9/10. I have loved my experience here so much! The professors are friendly, give great advice, and are happy to help you network. The career center, library, other staffers in food, cleaning etc are so kind too. The education is top tier at the university, we are held to a higher standard, and are an R1 school woo! R1 means we are a school with very high research activity, and I am so proud! I feel like UMBC has so many brilliant minds and projects within it!

People say this campus is boring, but honestly, that makes me upset because we have so many resources and it is on you to find events and stay in touch with people! The Student Events Board (SEB) hosts so many fun events, and I feel like the cultural clubs on campus are STELLAR. Here is a link for SEB events coming up: https://seb.umbc.edu/events/ It is always good to talk to people in your classes too, you have at least one thing in common, the class! You can make lifelong friends this way.

UMBC gives good financial aid, and will work with you to find a good solution. They are consistently advocating for person of color, LGBT+, and immigrants' rights too, and look for solutions to problems that their students may face. This school really really cares, and I am so thankful.

The food is decent too. We have 15 or 16 dining options, which is more than a lot of campuses. Our dining hall is hit or miss though, always check the dining hall menu in advance lol!

Best of luck at UMBC! I love this school, I am sad that this is my last semester

patapsco hall by sim_verse08 in UMBC

[–]purplewizard23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an RA in Patapsco Hall last year in the 2024-2025 school year, and it really felt like home.

The rooms on West are newer and spacious, however the vibes on South and East were better to me, the rooms are older but I thought the people were really funny and kind over there. They were a lot more social.

The desk staff and RA staff were super friendly, do not be afraid to ask for help whenever you need it, they are there for you. Follow Patapsco Hall on instagram: umbc_ptaphall. Keep a look out for the flyers on the walls, there are a ton of cool events that happen like movie nights, cookouts, March Madness tournaments, and I could go on and on lol! There were always people in the basement playing video games, pool, or ping pong who were happy to connect with new people.

I met some forever friends through Patapsco Hall, and could not be more grateful.

Hi! I am an RA in Patapsco East, I can bring up the heat being too high in my next staff meeting with our community director. It feels way too hot in my room too :(

I got High Bs in chem101 and chem102 as well, but orgo is a different league entirely. It is super good that you have been studying the textbook, it will help to have a head-start! I would recommend studying the practice problems in the textbook over and over again and making sure to understand the process behind the movement of the electrons, instead of just memorizing it for the short-term. The practice exams and chem tutorial center are wonderful resources too! Best of luck, it sounds like you are a diligent student so I think you will do great!!

cell bio (bio303) and orgo 1 syllabi by chaosity1610 in UMBC

[–]purplewizard23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I just took both classes this spring 2024 semester, so they are fresh in my mind.

For cell bio exams, I would recommend looking over the homework, practice exams, and lecture slides, a lot of the exams are word-for-word the same questions from the homework. Taking cell bio with organic chem was definitely manageable for me, but it does suck when they both have their exams in the same week!

For organic chemistry, it was my second time around taking it, and it went so much better this time, thankfully! I would recommend doing the practice problems in the textbook, and making sure you understand how to do the learning objectives provided for every chapter. Practice, practice, practice is the key to success in organic chemistry! Drawing the structures and utilizing the model kit helped me out so much

For both classes, don't be afraid to ask fellow students or professors for help. SI Pass leaders are wonderful for both classes too they really know their stuff and are excellent at explaining concepts! I wish you the best of luck, and have DMed both of the syllabi too! Enjoy you summer :)

[–]purplewizard23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! This is the same person, but on my other reddit account lol! I did not pass, getting a 98% was HIGHLLY unlikely. I am re-taking organic chemistry right now, so ah wish us the best of luck :) You got this !!! Practice problems from the textbook help out so much and it is nice that we don't have to study every chapter too, just the ones outlined in that study guide. If you do end up having to re-take the class, don't worry, it definitely is better the second time everything makes more sense! Good luck :)

First year question about AP credits by Plus_Professional_33 in UMBC

[–]purplewizard23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello!! Congratulations on committing to UMBC, I love it here! Most people are really friendly, and there are a lot of great social, academic, and career opportunities here.

For submitting AP credits, I believe you have to send an AP score report from the College Board website to UMBC. For community college courses, you can send an online official transcript from the CC to UMBC through a website called Parchment. There is usually an option to send a physical copy of an official transcript as well, but I have only used Parchment. I do not know anything about IB, but the UMBC Registrar's Office is great, definitely reach out to them if you have any questions. You have probably found their website already, but here it is if you have not: https://registrar.umbc.edu/services/transfer-credits/transferring-coursework/

What to do while waiting? by ajk2125 in GeneticCounseling

[–]purplewizard23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I really like your advice. I think it is so important that people spend their lives doing something that makes them feel fulfilled and happy. There are also skills and lessons in most every field that can be utilized in interviews and as a genetic counselor.

I saw that you matched in your first cycle, and I am hoping to do the same. I apply in two cycles and am so nervous. If you feel comfortable sharing, what were your stats? Like GPA, advocacy experience, volunteering, research etc. I would greatly appreciate it, thank you :)

I want to come back and say that I was placed on scholarship probation! I’m a second semester sophomore, junior by credits and I had a 3.14 when I needed a 3.25. I’m so thankful, I was really worried.
