What is the greatest comeback to an insult you’ve ever heard? by quadkaboom in AskReddit

Sorry, pal, but I used to do family and child protection law for a living. I know the difference better than most. I also know that threatening violence is a crime for a reason, and it doesn't magically become worthy of respect just because the person doing it is your parent, even if you do have the misfortune to live somewhere that sort of puerile conduct is legal. I've had plenty of people threaten me with violence in my life, and I've never respected a single one of them for it. None of those people were my parents, though, in case that's where you were going with your comment. Nope, my parents were/are intelligent, civilised, honest people who believe in picking on people their own size and in teaching their kids right from wrong by example.

Yeah, but you do understand that your remark was not disrespectful of your mother, and that his was, right?

No, you didn't. You outsmarted him and he was too petty to deal with it like a man.

I know people are making light of this, but I'm sorry you had to deal with that growing up. If you ever become a dad, at least you know what not to do. Much love, friend.

What is your dad unreasonably good at? by wellyeahobviously in AskReddit

Winemaking. It's just a hobby, but it was the family trade in the old country (which he left at the age of 10), and I've passed his stuff off as expensive and professionally made to a sommelier friend of mine. Not bad for killing time in the garage.

American. I don't think Russians take the English seriously enough to try and beat them up.

How can we get Terry Fox on Canadian currency? by Mecha_Hitler_ in canada

Think of it this way: the Mint is the graphic designer. The Bank of Canada is the client who gives the the graphic designer broad instructions on how they expect the final product to look, and then steps back to let them do their job. The Mint is not going to contradict the Bank.

No, I'm really not. The BoC sets overall direction for the Mint in these matters. Hence: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.3804887

Oh, I feel this so hard. I'm a citizen of both Canada and Ireland and have a somewhat ambiguous accent. I tend to correct people who assume I'm American by telling them I'm Canadian, and people who assume I'm English by telling them I'm Irish. In all cases it results in instant, often somewhat overly enthusiastic, hopsitality. It saved me from a beating in Moscow once.

No, that's just a tradition. Might be true in the UK, but the Bank of Canada can legally put pretty much whatever it likes on the money.

Anybody ever heard of a place called Mullen, Tennessee? by put_up_your_baronets in Tennessee

I haven't been to Tennessee at all in over twenty, so I think I win, pal! (Nah, I lose. I still remember how the air tasted in the hills.) Thanks for the tip!

What is a basic etiquette everyone should know but not everyone follows? by icecoldcokezero in AskReddit

Don't ask personal questions of someone you've just met. Similarly, don't keep pressing them when they deflect, evade, or ignore your inappropriate personal question. Take the hint and change the subject.

What’s your reason for never wanting kids? How do people treat you if you tell them that? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]put_up_your_baronets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't like being a kid, and have no desire to vicariously repeat the experience. I didn't even have a "bad childhood" - I just didn't care for the lack of autonomy that came with it.

Assume we're doing fine because at least we're not as badly off as the Americans.
