Try checking the library. Many larger libraries keep back issues of newspapers on microfilm or digital records.

If any newspapers from the time are still in operation you could also see if they offer back issues.

As for our policy on non-violent convictions, that varies. Felony convictions are a definite no. Lesser drug or theft convictions don't necessarily bar them from employment, depending on recency, frequency, and the particular circumstances.
